That is entirely possible, it's the first engine I've built. I took a ton of pictures so I would have an idea, and the camera I took them on got stolen. It just looked like it should go over that one with the groove that looks purpose made for that bearing

FE Technical Forum / 390 main bearing problem
« on: September 16, 2018, 05:01:34 PM »
Been trying to build the 390 for my 68 cougar for a while now and keep running into problems with the rear most main bearing with the thrust surface. It doesnt seem to matter what bearing set I buy, none of them will fit over the journal. So far I've tried clevite part numbers ms683p and ms685p and q sealed power that I cannot remember the part #, and they are too narrow to go over the journal in the block and seat. They will fit on the cap without any issue (a little snug, but pressed on by hand. Anyone ever come across this? Any suggestions?

Thanks for the advice guys, I passed on the deal, and am back in the market for headers, and an intake. The last 2 major things I need.

I do have access to a set of c8ae-h heads. I could pick them up for reasonable price and have those worked instead. If I buy those heads, they come with the headers....so I guess I could see if I could make those headers work

The heads are at the machine shop currently. I can not remember the casting number they are the gt heads though.

On that note, I'm open to suggestions for what headers will work for anything resembling a reasonable price.

Thanks guys, I'll probably just let them slip away. It would be a 7 hour round trip of driving to get them.

I unfortunately have no clue.

Damn, was hoping. Could have been a significantly less expensive route.

I have run across a set of headers for a 68 ranchero, which i believe was a fairlane body with a 390, I am wondering if they will fit in a 68 cougar, or if they can be made to for without too much issue.

I'll consider it, but according to the casting numbers on the rods I have were cobra jet rods. Those should be pretty solid ij would think

Thanks for the replies, I've decided after a lot of thinking and reading that I'm going to keep it a 390 in the interest of keeping costs down to pay for other goodies down the line a little.

Just left the machine shop, the block is good and is scheduled to be bored early next week. Guess it's time to make up my mind. My biggest concern is having a good fun powerful street car, and I know one guy with a duster with a bored and built 360 who I'd really like to serve some humble pie to.
