Why would anyone put a '93 Cobra crankshaft in a '71 block?  One piece rear main seal, balance 54oz, etc., etc..  Going the wrong way on that parts build in several ways.  Joe-JDC

I raced my 452 FE for several years with D camshaft, MR heads, TW, C-6/trans-brake at 4500 rpm, and shifted 1-2 at 7000, 2-3 7000 rpm, and went through the lights at 7400 rpm to 10.94 @ 123.65 mph on regular basis.  '69 Mach I with 4.57:1 gears, 10.5 x 15" tires. Mechanical tach drive tachometer.   Joe-JDC

Fairlane motor mounts, transmission mount,  FE radiator, and transmission lines if using an auto with cooler, driveshaft, and I would install a 9" rear with at least 31 spline axles.  Just about anything that fits a mustang or fairlane that came with FE will cross over.  The motor mounts are a tricky part because of the offset for the through bolt, but again use a fairlane mount, and it bolts in.  Upgrade the front springs, sway bar, shocks, and you have a mustang in a falcon body.   Joe-JDC

Yes, the '66 Falcon used the same front end architecture as the Fairlane.  FE will bolt in with Fairlane mounts, etc.  Joe-JDC

The Holley I have is a R-4548, which is listed as '61-67 352-428 carb in the Holley reference manual.  Joe-JDC

These heads have been sitting wrapped in the original plastic bags from the builder's shop where I bought the engine.  The shortblock and manifold are still wrapped in their plastic wrap.  I guess I will be taking the shortblock apart now to see what it looks like.  It is sad to think this was supposed to be dyno ready, with me only adding my NOS CJ camshaft, lifters, rocker arms.  Joe-JDC

Here are a couple of pictures of the performance valve job with new valves.   You can see the metal shavings still in the ports from the seat install.  One exhaust seat was missed completely for valve job.   Joe-JDC

Thanks for the replies.  I have heard the same response in the past, but this valve job is so unorthodox that I am a bit perplexed.  I am definitely going to get the head pressure tested before I attempt to install the valvetrain back in it.  One crack extends down about .300".  That one scares me.  Joe-JDC

If memory serves me correct, the couple of intake I have looked at, the holes were smaller than the butterflies of the 600 cfm Holleys, and would be a big hinderance to flow and create turbulence.  The throttle blades would not open properly?  I have a very old Holley here that I will look at tomorrow and see if I can identify the year/vehicle/throttle blades sizes.  Joe-JDC

Finally getting around to another project engine I bought several years ago from a supposed reputable builder that has name recognition and a huge business dealing with FE's.  I bought a numbers matching '69 428 CJ that was bored +.015", and supposed to be ready to dyno test.  Since I had some time on my hands, I decided to break down the heads and check to see if there was any work done in the bowl area, and guides, etc., thinking that I may go ahead and port the heads and intake manifold for this project vehicle.  What I found are three cracks in the intake valve seats in one head, no valve job on some of the exhaust seats, and no guide work, umbrella seals, and one port was so rotten from water damage that I am afraid the rust has eaten all the way through to the water passages.  This engine was supposedly ready to put oil in, and start up.  My question is can the intake seats be salvaged where the cracks are located, or will I need to have intake seats installed?  The exhaust seats are hardened, but no valve job.  I am reluctant to install both intake and exhaust valve seats in the same head with all the seats replaced.  Has anyone had good results with fixing this kind of a problem, and if so, what was the fix?  Joe-JDC

OUCH!  That stinks.  Sonic check for sure to see if the block can be salvaged.  Maybe after the sonic check, do a half fill of the block, and light hone for some modern piston/ring combination, and build it back to look stock.  Hopefully you can salvage the real parts for re-sale, or display.  Is the car going to be driven, or for car shows?  Start looking for another real 352 short block with correct date.  They are around.  Joe-JDC

If the heads flow in the 240-250 cfm range, and with over .600" lift solid roller camshaft, and ported intake, with the 10.5:1 compression, the good ring package, etc., should be in the 1.4-1.42 hp/ci range.  My little 303Y with similar preparation, head flow, .600" lift solid lifter engine made 390tq/463hp with 10.45:1 compression.  No reason the 352 can't do the same.  JMO, but it should be a good chance to see what a blueprint can do with a forgotten engine.  Joe-JDC
