FE Technical Forum / Oil galley plug question
« on: April 13, 2016, 08:39:41 PM »
I've got an oil galley plug question for you guys. I'm putting my short block together and I've run into an issue. The machine shop tapped all of my oil galley holes for pipe plugs except for the one behind the distributor. After unsuccessfully searching everywhere for a brass plug to put in there, I wound up using a steel plug. Yesterday, as I went to pound it in, this happened (see attached picture). For peace of mind, I'd like to tap this hole and just run a pipe plug like the rest of my block, my question is, what size tap are you guys using for this? Thanks in advance.

I'm not seeing rears on Calvert's website. I only see 9 way adjustable rear (not listed for galaxie) and the 90-10 fronts.

What are the drag guys running for rear shocks on your galaxies?  I've looked around and haven't found much besides stock replacement stuff.  The car is going to have a split mono-leaf/caltrac setup this year, and should be right around 600hp, so I'm looking for a better option than non-adjustable factory shock. Thanks guys!

Awesome car Al! I saw the car at autorama and couldn't stop drooling. I noticed the sign by your car said you're from Essexville, I'm just over the bridge from you (Bay City), great to see another local FE.

25 years old here. I bought my galaxie when I was 22, I'll have it for life. Working on a 445 for it currently
Maybe there is hope for the youngsters yet :) Most young men your age are only into video games and what ever the electronic toy of the week is. Yesterday I went to a local carshow and greybeard gathering and the average age seem to be 60 years old. The few "kids" there looked bored or more interested in the free hotdogs & soda that was offered.

Yes, there are way too many people my age into electronic devices. But most of my friends are true car guys, most of them are into imports, but that has alot to do with initial affordabilty. It's way cheaper to buy and build a nissan 240sx than it is to build american iron. I'd probably be doing the same, but God blessed me with a decent enough job so that I can build something FE powered. No matter what they're into, they all love my galaxie, lol.

All of the above posts sum up why I let my HRM subscription expire a few years ago. I even sent them a letter as to why, and I included something along the lines of "if I wanted to subscribe to Super Chevy magazine, I would have done so."

I might have missed it, but what heads were they using? What were the cam specs? Why only a 4.125 crank? Inquiring minds want to know.

Excellent write up. Minus the tunnel ram it sounds very similar to the solid roller 445 I'm building for my '64.  ;D

Haha, Lnstar, you sound like you have almost the same goals for your galaxie as I do with mine. I'll be shooting for 11's with a 445, but a 4 speed isn't quite in the budget yet, so I'm going the c6 route for now.

I got it figured out. The instructions say to mount the caliper ahead of the wheel centerline, but I read somewhere that if you flipped the brackets left to right, you could mount them behind the wheel centerline. This would allow me to keep the front sway bar. But it appears that the spindle is thicker on the towards the rear of the car, not allowing me to do the bracket flip, and that's where I was getting confused. Sway bar delete it is I guess. Thanks Jay.
