Doug, and all FE guys,

Was at Byron, but never did catch anyone.  Spent most of the time in the stands watching with my nephew who just turned 16 Tue.  Did walk through the pits later on, but assumed you had left.  Maybe next year!  Was there supporting my buddy Don, who's driving a 55 Chevy red/silver.

Brent just got back with me, I have .82 overdrive.

Shady opinion are always welcome on my block as I'm totally new to this.  Just trying to get a bigger fun factor out of my big heavy car  ;D

That and I can't believe its taken me this long to discover the track.

Good question I haven' t been able to confirm and don't have any documentation when purchased.  I.D. tag on tko is " TR3550-9 MA16 TCET4617 AE 0030"

Also remember I currently am running a 3.50 tru-trac.  I can't see placing a 445 in there any time soon, so wanting a better gear to play with in the mean time for cheap fun.

What MPH have you been running at the track, and what RPM do you shift at?

Sorry its taken me this long to get back, couldn't find my best time slip , and I don't have that many.

Best MPH is 90.87
Have been shifting at 4k rpm.  I know now I can go a little higher.

These numbers most likely are not best yet, as I just discovered this year my Edel. carb was starving me on fuel.  Tried a "Frankenstein" Holley 750 and new immediately what my next needs to be.

FE Technical Forum / Best Gears for my combo
« on: October 19, 2016, 02:51:32 PM »
Since I'm on the subject what would board members feel is the "best" gears for my current combo?  Can't see me building a 445 anytime soon, at least not for 3yrs; but plan on it one day.  Once I keep my promise to the wife and "attempt" to make her happy ( well both of us ); almost 20yrs since we bought house, very close to being paid off and would like to gut and update it.

Have been checking out complete packages for bolt in center section, around $1k.  Not sure if I find a good core if I can build or have built locally cheaper?  Figure I live in Central IL, corn country and my 13 mile commute to work is a nice 8mile freshly blacktop road.

Figure running a 28" slick / street tire out bck

Not very knowledgeable on differential's only changing a few out in my time, specifically 9".  I Have been exchanging emails with owner on the above full spool.  I'm just looking for some cheap HP when I go to the track  2-3X's a year.  I've done some searches on telling the difference between mini vs. full and thats about it.  What should I be asking owner or looking for when I go see it?

THANKS Kevin

Kind of has a ring to it  8)

Having too much fun every year with my 63Galaxie hardtop and seems like I'm pressing the limits with the almost stock 390 that we put together almost 4+yrs ago. Knowing that as I learn more and gain more experience the chances of me making a mistake or finding the weak link is going to happen someday...and I hope that way out there. Who would have thought it took me two summers and a new clutch to learn how to do an "effective" burn out:  see this yrs not so happy ending as I was dis-qualified in second round;

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nqIQPEt-oo

Yea, very proud owner / operator! Got to love a good burn out.

So I've been on the hunt for local sales and finally was rewarded with not one but two engines.  Long story short, Dude sold house and needed to move everything in his garage so he made me a pretty good deal or I hope ( haven't dis-assembled 2nd one yet).  Bought what appears to be 1976 truck 4V, 105 block and what looks like another early 70's 390/352 casting block.  Got most of the 105block tore down last night.

Once both blocks are bare, taking to shop to be magnaflux and sonic checked to see which one is best for 445 build.

It sure would look good in my 63 boxtop, BUT keeping with the goal of G-code tribute for now.  So guess I may have to pull the plug on the 63.5 fastback I've been looking at!  Reality is I'm one of the younger ( and lots to learn ) crowd.  Got "hooked" on the Nostalgic drag racing before the Meltdowns and other events.  They just pushed me over the edge to get it done, now I'm thinking of a second car, more for my wife than me or that's what she thinks. So I will always stay with the FE and doubt I WILL have funds for both it and a strictly drag car that would then get a 385series.

Reality is I will most likely never be able to afford it.  But hope all who have contributed will continue and increase public exposure.  I never thought I would get a 427, but the possibility is still there.  When the time comes will have to decide 427 or stroked 390?  There is a local racer who has complete package for cheaper if not the same cost as stroked 390. As usual no money ( or not enough for both ) at the moment so I will leave work today with the ride that got me here....1963 Galaxie powered by the garage built 390 and proud of it.

As stated above I will set back and dream of what the big dogs are running and hoping some day just to get a ride........
Later

Was curious for all you 1/4 mile guys if you use any software to collect data and what?  The guy who got me "hooked" on drag racing just got back from his first bracket race with a new to him 64 Cutlass strip only.  I've been going with him the last 10yrs in racing a 71 Cutlass street / strip car.  I've always been on him about filing his time slips electronically and told him now is the time to start with the new car.

Lntstar didn't mean to hijak your thread either, just felt we were thinking the same thing.  Acutally I was just hoping for 12's if we can get into mid 11"s and still be streetable EVEN better.  I put more miles on the blacktop and enjoy driving to work and taking the long way home than the few weekends spent at the strip.   But when I leave the strip all my swollen head can think about is faster, faster, faster....

Lenz  we did have Berry's book, very helpful for me who enjoys learning and doing things twice or more.  I performed all the oiling mod's on the block.  Just always wonder how many other little secrets and tips that aren't in that book??  My thought process on spending the cash for a stroker was to pay the extra if anything else for security reasons and insurance with those that do it everyday.

Will be fun and a sad day to see my $1k build die some day.   Like life its going to happen ( maybe ) just want to be ready for the next one, bigger and better.

Perfect timing and question, as I have been asking myself the same question since coming back from the Meltdown Drags 2ys ago.  I know I'm running on barrowed time with my current build, BUT hope it lasts at least two more yrs before giving in or showing any signs of driver abuse.  I've been curious as to how to put the next one togeather; purchase built or do myself?  With only two builds under my belt ( 400modified and 390 ) can't say i'm experienced, BUT have one hell of an engine builder on my side ( He's a die hard Old's guy ) that helped all the way through the 390 build.  Says he'll never touch one again.....until I'm ready.

I've been contemplating on how to start the build?  Start buying parts and in what order OR just start saving until I get to the magic number?  For me its easier to hide the purchases here and there from the wife.  She sees I spent $8k or more on a engine when were both driveing 100K + daily drivers I could be in serious trouble.

Still have to get the caltraks, had to put cheap *ss slapper bars on for what I'm doing currently.
