I had a little time to look at this engine so I pulled a main and rod bearing cap .The mains are fully grooved and down to the copper .Rod bearings are down to copper also .Both std. I also checked the piston to deck height .On the one I checked it was .015 I wasnt expecting that .I would imagine with some good premium gas from 1966 this old 428 scooted around pretty good.Doug Happy New Year!

The reman starter I had on the truck worked fine it was just difficult to get to.When I did get the powermaster installed it sounded bad .I wasnt going to wear my flexplate out so off it came .After I did some trimming on my headers and the truck both starter and header fit much much better .My c-6 had a leak so it had to come out .Everything is better now no leaks ! Fellows check my classified ad .This 428 I have has a lot of potential .Happy New Year !Doug

I picked up a #9106 powermaster starter at summit .it took me a couple of attempts to get it clocked correctly .But when I did I had a ton of room! Bolted it in wired it up hit the switch and it sounded terrible .Like a chevy that wasnt shimmed right .Took it back for a refund . Put my old reman and it sounde normal all is good .I did a little grinding on my headers and the truck as well  Everything fit better .I didnt need a starter after all .I have an almost new pioneer flexplate it never made a noise with my old starter .I called powermaster they said take it back no reason for the noise .All is well it just didnt work out .Thanks everyone .Doug

FE Technical Forum / Re: Starter for 73 truck with headers

As can be expected headers have always made my fe powered trucks run better .It seems they just have a better power band .I never realized better fuel economy but the power increase was there .But they are a pain .With a manual transmisson they are a bit easier to install but they are tight with a c-6.Doug

Have you considered a set of shorty headers ?Might save you some time and effort .Doug

Mark hit the nail on the head you have to loosen the header and have the starter unbolted turn the starter and twist it out >then both will come out and that crossmember is a pain as well .If I didnt hate leaks I would have left it be .I have a comet with headers too it is easier to pull that one than this truck .All that aside looking at a powermaster #9106 later this week might get a chance to see one in person this week .Thanks for the responces Doug

I am just making an attempt to make this an easier job in the future .The header and starter have to come out together .I lucked out on my reman starter it is a good one just thinking of the future .I will look at thepowermaster .I have one of those on my comet with good luck and it fit my hedmans good .Thanks for the comments .Doug

You know 6667 when I got my 502 installed I had my old mickeys 29.5x9 stiff sidewall and used they worked better than my new 29x9 Hoosiers d06 compound .I tried everthing this past year .Sometimes it would hook 1.46 60 ft mostly NOT.I had the convertor loosened still spinning .In Ga. it is starting to rain I need one more test session before I just buy some new tires .I will go back to mickeys 3056 st.The Hoosiers fit much better but it seems they wont work with my car .Thanks for your info and I am thinking about that moving my spring also but first I will try different tires .Good luck to you Mr. Fairlane .Doug

If anyone has a suggestion for a smaller starter it will help me out .I had to remove my c-6 due to a leak .Well anyone that has a 70s era truck with headers you know how tight a stock starter is with headers .I dropped my headers and after turning the starter got both out . Just curious if there is a smaller starter that would make this job easier .I believe these are Flo Tech headers and my starter is a factory reman .Thanks all Doug

I guessed that you had those springs moved .Somehow I am determined to get my car to work with those 9x29s .My loosened up convertor didnt help much either .So I plan to go back to some mickey thompson tires .I might consider a gear swap .I currently have 4.10s maybe a 3.90 or 3.70 gear is in my future .Thank you for sharing your info.Doug
