Non-FE Discussion Forum / Re: welding helmet mod
« on: March 16, 2024, 02:36:01 PM »
Thats an awesome idea. Did you get that from watching Beany and Cecil when you were a kid?

I have been doing my welding outside to keep the shop from getting so polluted. In the cool winter air, fogging is a big problem. So I'll do you mod.  I think I am also going to mount a powerful LED light on the front to help me see. I have a chunk of cloth on the back of my helmet that hangs down over my neck to prevent lights behind/above me from reflecting off the inside of the lens, that really helps sometimes.

I'm in for Sick 66 as well. Some of us are planning to start at the beginning of Route 66 in Chicago a couple days before the event, and then after racing at 6 tracks, finish the route to the Santa Monica pier. I'm REALLY looking forward to that adventure.  See you there, Alan.

I do have a Ford 9" in my car, so I think I am clear to post this.  ;D

...Even if they are machined to perfection through all bores as far as position and alignment, with throttle plates that are suitable fit to the bores, the throttle shafts will still be prone to binding due to thermal growth of the head versus shaft, mounting forces, and just how much things tend to move around on their own over time. I don't know how the original was set up, but I think I'd just plan to install a zero backlash coupling that can tolerate small misalignment and axial displacement between each bore, and call it a day...

Wow, Professor, this is an amazing project. How many copies are you going to make? I would think at least a dozen would easily sell for big $$.

That yellow ford is running mechanical injection.

THe continued story on this is really interesting. The folks who salvaged the boat tracked down the original owners, who related how they got caught in a big storm with a dead engine causing the boat to become swamped by large waves and sinking. The man, woman, and little kid on board barely escaped with their lives and did not want the boat back due to memories of the horrific experience.
The finders got the boat cleaned up, and most surprisingly, they got the 460 running with minimal effort! They were also able to figure out why the engine stalled on the lake in the storm. Then some petty, jealous, government bureaucrat gave them infinite grief and tried to charge them with violating some regulation while recovering the boat so they had to get an attorney and fight.  It's all on youtube.

How about radial clearance to the valve relief edges?

It was like watching a train wreck in slow motion.  Jay, since you didn't /couldn't watch to the end, he got fired before he was done and the customer took the cammer back.  It's a sad thing when that happens, but at least he owned up to it, admitted he was to blame. Not too many would do that.

...i then tried tapping the starter WHILE pushing on the bar on the crank at the same time and it started spinning...

How did you not get hit by the breaker bar when the starter spun it?

I don't think the curvy lines of the Mustang fastback top and rear window work with the angular line of the Cougar. Something with straighter lines is needed. Maybe take the top from a 64 Comet, cut down the width, flatten the top a bit, flatten the back glass and inset it a bit like a 68 charger.

That's great news, Leny, how exciting!

Forum members, I have seen Lenys car in person, the pictures can not do it justice. It is amazing.

Is the Tripower air filter the same?

As a guy who has never balanced a crank, I have a question: If the counterweight counterbalances the reciprocating motion of the pistons and rods, and the pistons and rods in a performance motor are lighter than stock, why do you add weight to the counterweights to balance the crank in a performance build? it would seem that weight would need to be removed  to compensate for the lighter reciprocating parts.

Interesting for sure.... how in heck do you get the front end of a Cobra to weigh more than the original shipping weight? 1/4" plate winch bumper, steel wheels.... 4339lbs!!! like a Country Squire wagon

AC   Cobra   1965   Classic   427   Tremec   4339 total   2551 front   1788 rear

All iron cammer, 14-71 blower, 200 amp alternator, 5 gallon copper/brass radiator to cool it, and a Fatman front crossmember.  :)
