Very interesting thread!
All of a sudden my 527 Shelby "big Bore" engine looks like a small block  ;)
I will follow this thread carefully  ;D

Here is the pics of the plugs. The plugs look pretty consistent to me with #4 and #8 slightly moist
#1 and #2 first

Just curious which intake gaskets you used.

I don't really remember, sorry. I replaced them last year due to a faulty hydraulic lifter. I bought them from Survival so I guess they are good quality.

Yeah, something is going on. It fell flat on its face at exactly 5500rpm. The HP curve was still increasing when that happen and from earlier dyno sessions I know this engine will easily do 6000.

The #4 actually has a slight mist of oil on it from what I can tell , it is not matte black like pure soot but ever so slightly "moist".
I'll roll up my sleeves, bust my knuckles, and yank the other 7 plugs out and have a look . I'll post pics for you to see.

What also worries me is what Nightmist66 said, vacuum or exhaust leak. I can't find any evidence of an exhaust leak from the heads and the O2 sensors are in the collectors before the joint. There is only one vacuum line, going from the throttle body to the MAP sensor, and it looks good. Line is new, fittings are new.

Can you point the camera down the throat of the plug and use a flashlight to illuminate instead of the camera flash?

Is this better Barry?
There is a limitation on the file size on this forum so I can't make it larger

Thanks for the comments.
I yanked out #4 since that is the easiest to get to. Looks rich to me...

Please have a look at this video.
Seperate O2 sensor in each header showing perfectly good and equal numbers.
Dyno operator didn't understand why it was smoking so bad. Could be soot and grime in the exhaust pipes and mufflers he suggested, but this video was taken about 2 hours into the tuning session so I would think most of it was cleared out by then?
Could it be yet another intake gasket leak? It uses some oil but I have an oil leak somewhere as well since it drips from the bellhousing.

Thanks for your feedback guys.

Here is what tech support at Moroso answered: "Our stated capacities are always just the pan. So it would be 8, plus the filter."

So I guess 1qt in the filter before it goes on + 8qt in the pan, start it up, let it sit off for a good while and then pull the dipstick and make a mark will be fine then :)

Is there a rule of thumb regarding oil height compared to the bottom of the block?

Such a rule of thumb might help with non-stock combinations and unknown dipstick markings.

paulie

Look at the posting Jay made earlier. 2.25" below pan rail

Hopefully their tech's answer confirms what is in the catalog. I hate when you ask several people and get several answers. I would say if they tell you different, I would start at 7 quarts in the pan plus filter and go from there. Easier to add more than take away. ;)

Yeah, lets hope he does :)

I'm looking at my Moroso catalog right now. I'm guessing you have either the #20607 or #20608 oil pan. Interesting note on bottom of page: OIL PAN CAPACITIES DO NOT INCLUDE OIL FILTER CAPACITY. I would say it is a true 8 quarts in the pan + filter.

My pan is the 20608 with internal trap doors and baffles.
I have just sent them an email so it will be interesting to hear what they say :)

Who makes the pan?  I thought Canton's 8 quart pans were total "system" capacity including filter.  An email to whoever made it would give you their opinion

Pan is from Moroso. I'll shoot them an email and ask :)
