FE Technical Forum / Re: rear tire clearance left vs. right
« on: September 30, 2025, 02:35:45 PM »
Thanks for the replies guys, keep them coming. Eliminating the rubber "isolator" pieces should raise the back of the car 1/2 inch. This may change the clearances a bit. I ordered the Cal Tracs this AM. it comes with a solid front spring eye bushing. This likely will restrict side to side movement of the springs sideways. By the way, everyone at Calvert Racing are great to deal with. All of them are very friendly and helpful.
Thanks, Chuck (S)

FE Technical Forum / rear tire clearance left vs. right

The full story is too long to tell, short story I'm trying to fit M/T street drag radials (255)on the car. And I have them on the car. The problem is the passenger side has about 1/4"- 5/16" less clearance than the driver's side, The passenger side rubs slightly on bumps. Is this a known problem? Is the fix to properly relocate the spring perches? I also want to ditch all the rubber insulator pieces. Eventually I will install Cal-Tracs. Car is 98% street. 462 Fe, lots of good parts, solid roller cam, 4 speed. Is there an easier fix. Any and all input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Chuck (S) Forgot, car is 1966 Cyclone GT.

Galaxiex, Brent, and Woody's, Thanks for the information and pictures. Woody's, did you just machine a "register" in the 1"spacer so the nut would be below the surface of the spacer? With the 1" spacer, do you think the VCs would clear the master cylinder (manual brakes, 1966 Cyclone)? How about plug access with the spacers? Take the VCs off to get to 7 and 8? Thanks, Chuck (S)

My thanks to all who replied. So my first choice is out. What will fit? The tall factory pent roof covers? Anything else? Thanks, Chuck (S)

I DEFINITELY want a pair as soon as you can make them. I've been in a queue at my machine shop since April and my turn is coming up soon. I don't want to lose my spot. I just left a message on your work phone. Chuck (S) 405 five one 9  six 98 zero. I'll pay in advance if you would want me to do so.

Will the finned aluminum (no name) CJ valve covers clear Harland Sharp Rockers on TFS heads? Thanks, Chuck (S)

FE Technical Forum / 1966 390 Cyclone dipstick

Evidently the 1966 390  had a significantly longer dipstick and tube. I do not know why (PS pump perhaps). Does any one have a source for these parts? Thanks, Chuck

Ross, If you start making them let me know. I've been calling him every few days leaving a message and phone number. No answers.
Thanks, Chuck (S)

Many thanks to everyone who responded. Barry, You confirmed what I had heard for many years from a race engine shop. Dave seems to get it right a lot, for a long time. So, should i Dyno it with something larger, feeding my ego, and run  the 80496 on the street, or something else? This may make me sound petty, but who has not smiled when the number is better than predicted. If it is just me, feel free to say so. I appreciate all of the great information and advice I have received here. Please continue to share what you know. Thanks, Chuck (S)

JB, The dimensional data I'm using comes from the M/T website (Street ET, SS). I completely forgot about the "hump". I now recall the hump being a problem on my first Cyclone way back when. Thanks, Chuck

Kevin, Thanks for the reply and good information. I suppose the next question becomes, is it right sized for the 462, 6600 max RPM engine in a 1966 Cyclone, 3.91:1 geared, 4 speed, street car?  I have a 80496-1 carb, but I don't know if I use it, will I be leaving significant power on the table. It worked well on a 408 CID Clevor, MANY years ago, but the 54 cubic inch difference makes me wonder. Any and all input will be appreciated. Thanks, Chuck

JB, I mocked up a 255x60x15 rear tire on the 15x8, 4.50 BS wheel. I had 1" clearance to the spring and 7/16" to the fender lip. the 275 tire is 1.1" wider section width so, that is a no go with these wheels, that I am committed to using. Chuck

Holley called it a 950 CFM carb. I have seen that rating debated and questioned many times. Does someone know what the CFM is? Does anyone have experience with it? If so, what are your impressions? Possible home is a pretty aggressive 462 in a 1966 Cyclone street car. Thanks, Chuck (S)
