Non-FE Discussion Forum / Hurst Super Shifter - Reverse spring
« on: October 01, 2025, 07:19:03 AM »
I have a Super Shifter with push down reverse. It is used and a swap meet purchase. The reverse push down spring is missing. I am trying to figure out what this spring looks like and find an exploded view or someone familiar with all of the parts. I do not know if other parts are missing? On the image (link) below it shows a rebuild kit for a Super Shifter. Is the spring shown the one I need? If so I can easily buy the kit. thank you in advance for any input.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Where to attach 4 chain engine tilter?
« on: September 18, 2025, 04:43:30 AM »
Doug, will there be an intake on the test fit engine? 2 x 4 perhaps? I use a plate on each carb opening and two chains on the tilter, ( one to each plate). The plates have three holes and the front & rear chains don’t have to match locations on the plates.

Engine is fully assembled and a single  4 barrel.

Thanks!

This may seem very basic to some? I want to lift and maneuver an engine and transmission bolted together into the engine bay. I’ve always put my transmissions in from the bottom but this project (’78 F150 w/ Crown Vic front swap) the front clip is off so I can just slide it in. I have a 4 chain tilter so where on a FE do I hook my chains up for  the best control? I need to modify the trans cross member and mount as the Crown Vic location for engine mounts is slightly different than stock and who knows where the trans mount will fall? So I’ll be moving and tilting to find my spot. Thanks for any input.

I would use them except the shaft will not go through. I tapped one on and it was way too tight.

Looking for a set of 8 rocker stands. Used is fine. I don't need fancy aftermarket unless they are cheap :-)

I picked up a set of OEM stands at a swap meet a few years ago and thought I'd use them on this stock 390 I'm putting together with parts I have lying around. I discovered that the bore is oval. .836 up and down and .845 across. I assume someone torqed them like lug nuts? So before you offer any, could you check the bore for roundness. If it helps, I have two NOS stands so if you have a broken set of 6 or 7, that will work too.

Thanks,

I want to create a contest/game to have at the future Fairlane Club National Meets. It will be a timed "Tune-Up" Challenge. I need one un-useable head hopefully at scrap pricing. I'd like it to be a head from an engine family that would have been in a 62-79 Intermediate. SBF, 351C, FE, 385 Series. Part of the game will be removing spark plug wires and the plugs and replacing them. An Air cleaner and distributor will be involved. Best time will win an award or prize. I am currently developing the game.

Thanks,

Thank you Jim, that is good t o know.

I am putting a Crown Vic front crossmember and suspension on my 78 F150. I plan to drop a 390 stroker in it. Nothing too high Performance just dependable and it’s gonna be more of a beater truck than anything. Looking to see what headers others may have used. I am also using the Outcast engine mounts. I saw a 10-year-old YouTube video with a similar installation, but they never mentioned which headers they used or make or application in the video. Thanks!

I'm a bit suspicious of those sonic numbers. With a 4.26 bore, they don't leave any space, or they would interfere with the adjacent cylinders. It sounds like you might have had the wrong metal setting.

Me too? 4.63 bore spacing minus 4.23 bore leave about .400 for two wall thicknesses and coolant flow. Two .200 walls are touching and no coolant flow? Am I wrong?

I have FPA headers and there was interference with the power ram. There was also interference with the z-bar. On the z-bar I shortened the one arm and moved the pin back 3/8" which was adequate clearance. Here is a CAD drawing I made showing the difference and pictures of the FPA's (not new) on my 427 going in my '66 Fairlane.

Most long headers will require some attention to the power steering cylinder. The headers and cylinder intersect. Typically a drop bracket is required to move the cylinder down to clear the headers. Heat from the headers will typically melt the boot and deteriorate the seals on the cylinder. It takes some tweaking of things to get proper clearance but it's doable. I have tried the hear reflective sleeving over a boot and made a drop bracket 5/8" longer than those in the aftermarket. I still had issues and went manual steering. Good luck!

The FE R&R in Muncie is looking to be a really good one. Not only is there going to be an SOHC collection, but D.W. Hopkins will be there, and just today it was announced that Ray Paquet signed up to come and race. Of course that's not good news for the Pro FE crowd or the Quick 8, but will be some of the best (fastest) cars to ever show up.

I'll try my best to make it with my car, but either way, weather permitting, I'll be there.

It's gonna be fun! Looking forward to seeing you there Doug.
