FE Technical Forum / New Build and Part Compatability
« on: July 30, 2018, 09:48:56 PM »
Hi everyone.  I'm going to replace the 428 CJ engine in my 68 Mustang with a new rebuild.  Engine's been in the car since 1986 and it's getting a little tired.  I pulled one of my CJ engine blocks from under the bench and am going over it to make sure it's sound.  I want a nice, strong street engine that will run on pump gas.  A stump puller.  I'm thinking of +.030" overbore, a Scat 4.250 crank.  I'm thinking a hydraulic flat tappet cam.  Any recommendations for a cam?  Would Edelbrock heads be a good choice?  I have a set of FPP tri y headers.  Would they be compatible with this combination?  Any and all suggestions are appreciated.  Thank you!

FE Technical Forum / Rocker arm, valve stem alignment
« on: August 30, 2015, 09:03:53 AM »
Good morning.  A friend of mine is assembling a 390.  After installing the rocker shafts, he noticed the rocker arm wasn't properly located on the valve stem top.  In fact, it was close to sliding off.  The heads are brand new Edelbrocks.  He called me as I've assembled a few FE engines but I've never had this problem.  What could be causing this?  Wrong rocker stands?  Wrong length pushrods?  He also said the engine used to break rocker arms before the rebuild.  Any ideas as to how to correct the problem?  Thank you.

Kind of like when you talk to a guy on the phone about buying some kind of Mustang and he tells you it's "A BOSS GT 500 Cobra Jet Hi-Po"!  Good one!

Although I've been reading Car Craft for more years than I care to think about, I always take what any mag prints with a grain of salt.  If it don't sound right it probably isn't!  As proof, on page 93 of the September issue, they refer to a 64 Falcon's original engine as a "260-inch inline six"!  Never heard of that one!

Thank you for the great information and for the comeback.  I'm always grateful to folks with more knowledge who are willing to teach me something!   I remember something called a Ported Vacuum Switch which screwed into the water neck.  It was my understanding that it would switch from ported vacuum to manifold vacuum if it sensed an overheat condition.  It would advance timing at idle and also increase idle RPM to bring the engine temp back down.  It was an early band-aid emission device.  I'm pretty sure the 428CJ had vacuum advance with a PVS.  I can certainly see how a pretty wild engine wouldn't do well with vacuum advance but on a milder street engine I would think it would help low speed street operation both in a cleaner idle and helping reduce engine temperature.  Educate me!  LOL!

I've heard a lot of different things about the benefits of running vacuum advance on the street and about whether to use ported or manifold vacuum.  I found this essay on the Internet which seems to agree with what I know about running vacuum advance but I thought I would run it by the experts!  What do you guys think?

From what I've heard, vacuum advance will help with cooling and will make the car idle cleaner.

Interesting results.  I have to admit I was kind of skeptical about the Car Craft test because for years we were fed the idea than a clutch fan was trash and the flex fan was best.  That theory seemed to make sense if for no other reason that the flex fan was lighter.  Your numbers verify Car Craft's results.  Goes to show that the auto engineers knew what they were doing!  If they could have substituted a cheaper flex fan for the clutch fan, they would have.

The Heli Coil repair has always worked well for me but if I had access to a good welder, I'd probably weld them up and drill and tap them.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Balance tubes X vs H?
« on: January 22, 2013, 08:37:26 PM »
I used to run a 2.5" pipes with a balance tube and some kind of turbo mufflers and turn downs.  I switched to a 3" X pipe and 3" Hooker Max Flo mufflers and the difference was amazing.  I was worried the Max Flos might be too loud because they are 3" straight through but the X pipe seems to act as a kind of muffler and it's quieter at idle than the turbo mufflers.  Lot of work getting that 3" X pipe up between the frame ties!

I've built a number of drag cars over the years and whenever I install a roll cage, belts or whatever, I do it with the thought in mind that somebody is going to test my work someday.  I've seen rollbars made of exhaust tubing which would fold over and kill the driver if the car goes on it's lid.  I've seen bungee cords holding batteries in place and all kinds of things that would cause mayhem in a crash.  This video has been around a while but it shows how NOT to build a car.

I saw that right away and wondered if someone would mention it.
