Running this(see attachments) RAM dual disc behind a 387 and inside a Lakewood scatter shield. Using a hydraulic release bearing. Pedal effort is surprisingly light. Both disc's are organic. TILTON realase bearing works great with the TKO 600.

Long style!

Diaphragm plates are a GM design, not really compatible with older Ford vehicles without some modification.

Modern Long style pressure plates are not the 3000-3500 lb plates of the 60’s.  Pedal pressure is not bad at all.

I’d recommend a RAM Powergrip HD.   It would be rated for 650 hp and I've never had anyone complain about the pedal pressure.

Very good engagement on these as well with a sprung hub to absorb any chatter. Metallic facing on both sides. It will require a billet steel flywheel. It will chew through a cast iron flywheel in a matter of weeks.

I like the PTFE  nylon braided fuel hose from Vibrant. I've had a lot of clients complain their garages wreek of fuel when their cars have sat a week or so. They all had neoprene stainless braided fuel hose.

Switched all of them to PTFE and no vapors can be smelled after months of sitting.

Wow.....the Mahle 4.270 pistons break at 12lb/ft and rotate @ 10lb/ft. This engine is still on the stand with no runtime. Does it speak a lot on the 1mm, 1mm, 2mm ring pack, or is there something else mechanically wrong?

FE Technical Forum / Re: reuseable head gasket

On the topic of torque plate honing. If a guy is just using regular fel pro's is a set of gaskets considered consumable for each hone job? Meaning you will need to buy 4 gaskets for each engine build? That makes a set of Cometics a lot easier to justify if so.

On the composite gaskets, I've found them to adhere quite well to the cast iron torque plate. I stopped using composite gaskets when my machinist and discussed RA. MLS for 25 years.

I don't coat them, although I don't see a problem with it. Especially since OEM procedure was to do so. FoMoCo is always right when they're right. If something is wrong....it's probably Asian.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Electric versus Flex Fan
« on: January 10, 2025, 03:50:15 AM »
I like to use OEM electric fans. Very few aftermarket fans compare to the Lincoln Mark VIII, the Contour, or the Taurus dual fans. The Mark fan I use the most. Especially on A/C cars or trucks. It's a dual speed fan and I only wire to the high speed. I use a pwm controller to vary the speed with temp and with the A/C on the fan is brought to 50% duty cycle until the temperature takes over.

The controller is by dccontrol.com, and I've been using his controllers since 2010. Over 100 installed and on my personal vehicles. Not a single failure. I believe they're lifetime warranty.....maybe. Anyway affordable and with a temp probe in the radiator fins, signal wire from a pressure switch or the clutch, +12v, and ground.....the hardest part is finding a spot to mount the little thing.

Well, I run the same thickness Cometic a lot, and they're used to torque plate bore and hone the blocks. That requires that they're torqued down to spec. There's one use before final assembly.

On race engines, I've sprayed with copper coat when running water through the block and heads and I've gotten 5 maybe 6 uses, but that's as many as I've dared to chance.

On a street engine.....I've gone one reuse after engine break-in. That's all I've had to so far.

A solid copper gets many reuses and gets talked about. I think it seems like practicing black magic for some to reuse an MLS gasket. All I've commented on is in relation to the FE engine.

In the LS and SBF world that I also build in, the reuse is a common practice.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Piston Ring Gap ( something new )
« on: December 30, 2024, 09:06:41 AM »
What is the reason?

The reason is to vent any pressurized gasses, that pass the second ring, into the crankcase without restriction.

I run adjustable PCV valves from ME Wagner on all my builds, and I find they work great in this situation. No seal pushout or seepage anywhere. The valve covers are oil free at the breathers. On the FE I install the valve in the rear of the intake with a fabricated baffle beneath it. I run the line to a MOROSO catch can and back to the intake.

Yes, and in one back to back test, the engine was able to carry power another 800rpm before slowly decreasing from max power. That was the major advantage I observed after changing the recommended gap of "minimum 0.015" to 0.035". This was actually larger than the second ring gap at 0.028".

Well that's good to hear! I really love the whole build. I owned a 2008 Extreme that took $12k to make it fun. The amount of time and money you put in....well, I can't imagine.

I don't know if you've sold it, but I wish you well.
