FE Technical Forum / Fe pushrod checker recommended brand and size range.
« on: January 19, 2024, 04:26:36 PM »
Hello everyone
Just looking for a recommendation on what brand and size range pushrod length checker to purchase. For example 8.800-9.800 or taller range one?
As I understand the factory length pushrod for 390 fes where 9.590 and 9.620.
This is for a fe390 block bored 0.030 over stroked to a 445 with trick flow cylinder heads and a c7zx-9425-a intake manifold if that information helps.
Just wondering what size range pushrod checker is best to buy ready for measuring what pushrod I need.
Thanks all for the help/information and recommendations.
Many thanks.

FE Technical Forum / Re: FE fuel pump eccentric Recommendations.
« on: March 26, 2023, 09:04:57 PM »
Thank you everyone for the reply's and information.
Thatdarncat thank you for the explanation and part numbers very much appreciated.
Brent i am going to purchase a cloyes 9-3508X9 timing chain as you recommended, so based on the views/information posted i guess ill purchase a 1 piece nos ford fe eccentric. Hopefully that will work with that cloyes timing chain set up and also have plenty of clearance inside my factory timing cover?
Thank you all very much again for our help and advice, its very much appreciated.
Have a nice day

FE Technical Forum / FE fuel pump eccentric Recommendations.
« on: March 26, 2023, 11:08:30 AM »
Hello Everyone.
I am once again after another recommendation/advice regarding a fuel fe fuel pump eccentric (Unfortunately my ford fe books with information in are currently packed away and trying to find them is like looking for a needle in a haystack)
What are your recommendations for a new fuel pump eccentric for a ford fe390 stroker. The block is a 65-66 Fe390.
Did the early fe390 have a two piece fuel pump eccentric? then late swap over to a one piece for some reason that is what i am thinking? or is that small block ford i am getting mixed up with?
So recommendations do i try and find a nos ford fe 390 1 piece fuel pump eccentric or nos 2 piece? or is there a better more readily available aftermarket version/brand.
Im sure i read in a fe book somewhere that the 460 Motorsports fuel pump eccentric can be used maybe it was in barry robotnicks book?
Thank once again for any guidance/ advice.
Have a nice day
Dave

Hello Everyone.
Thanks again all for your help and information.  Galaxiex and Brent where would you recommend a purchase/ what brand of a steel fe camshaft thrust plate? I see a blue thunder one listed on ebay.com however it does not say the material its made of? it just mentions about Aircraft etched surface with molybdenum disulfide, i know blue thunder make great products, however just want to be sure what i buy is right for my application(hydraulic steel billet roller camshaft).
Many thanks again for your time.
Kind regards
Dave

FE Technical Forum / Fe 445 stroker timing chain recommendations
« on: March 12, 2023, 04:38:10 PM »
Hello Everyone
What are peoples recommendations as regards to a very good double roller timing chain set for a fe445 stroker.
The 445fe stroker has a billet steel hydraulic roller camshaft and roller lifters if that helps as i know in the past i have been advised stick to the same style materials(billet steel camshaft there for billet steel double roller timing set so the strength of materials used is the same.) I was looking at a coyles timing set however according to some reviews, posted on websites there was a problem with a lot of them not having the degree markings in the correct place from what i have learned. I have then looked at precision oil pumps, and they sell a rollmaster timing chain set with a Ford Torrington Needle Bearing Cam Retainer Plate Kit.  I have then looked at just rollmaster double roller timing chains on there own(no torrington needle bearing).
So the question i have is, is it neccessary (do you have to) use a torrington needle bearing set up when you are using a billet steel hydraulic roller camshaft? or can you just buy the normal rollmaster(romac)/coyles ect) billet steel double roller timing sets and use the stock camshaft thrust plate(retaining plate) without going to the torrington needle bearing set up?
And if you can use the stock double roller billet steel timing set recommendations? rollmaster(romac)/coyles/ howards cams ect?
Are there any benifits to going to a torrington needle set up on the thrust plate?
Thank you for any help or advice that you can offer.
Many thanks
Dave

Hello Brent
Thank you for your reply.
The reason I asked about the balancer and flex plate was because I am having the rotating assembly balanced for my fe 445 and would like people's input/ advice as regards to what has worked for them.
As I mentioned I have a professional products fe427 balancer and wasn't sure if I should purchase the Roman 427 fe balancer if it's more robust, and with it being Sfi approved, I don't mind buying good products as I would like to build the motor once and do it right and make it last.Have you ever had problems with either balancer Brent when you have built or dynoed a engine?
Thanks for the In put as well regarding the flex plate again I needed it for the rotating assembly to be balanced and was just curious what people with classic fe powered cars and mustangs are using and has worked for them.
I took your advice from last year when I posted and got some Mahle power pak dished pistons and shelved the flat tops and have also purchased some fe trick flow heads and shelved the edelbrock76cc heads. As regards timing chain I just thought if I purchase a flex plate and balancer from summit I should get a timing chain set ready and didn't think how it relates to the camshaft  I should of known better my mistake. I will contact yourself as regards to a camshaft and what you think would be best.
Hydraulic flat tappet or hydraulic roller.
Thanks again Brent and for anyone else that offers some help and guidance.
Kind regards
Dave.

FE Technical Forum / Harmonic balancer/ flex plate /timing chain set advice.
« on: September 15, 2021, 05:38:26 PM »
Hello everyone I am after some advice and guidance as regards to a 445 fe street stroker motor parts.
I currently have a new professional products 427fe balancer however I was thinking of buying a Romac  427 fe balancer instead based on reviews does anyone have advice or experience with Romac balances are they a lot better balancer or should I stick with the professional products one?
When looking at the Romac balancer it says you can order it with undersized Id bore size for scat and aftermarket stroker cranks,I have a scat forged 4.250 stroker crankshaft and have measured the snout of the crank where the harmonic balancer slides on,the measurement I got was 1.375(1inch 3/8) is that the standard size for a normal cast fe factory crankshaft as well or is my measurement smaller than a stock crankshaft snout?
My next question is what is, a good reliable street performance double roller timing chain set I have been looking at the ford performance parts timing chain set for the fe or the comp cams #7108. Anyone know of a better good reliable timing set? What would you recommend based on experience.
Lastly I'm looking to buy a new flex plate for the 390/445 fe. It has a c6 transmission on the back what are your thoughts/ opinions on a good flex plate search for genuine nos or I was looking at a performance automatic platinum extreme  series #pa36400 internal balance. Is there a better option/ that people who have had more fe experience than me are using.
Thank you for your time or any help you can provide.
Many thanks
Dave

FE Technical Forum / Re: 445 Fe Stroker camshaft recommendations.

Hello Everyone.
I want to first thank you all for your information, help and kind words i really can not say thank you enough for your help. It is very much appreciated. If i wasnt so far away i would gladly buy everyone a beer and a pizza just to say thank you for your time and help. :D
I think the first thing that is best to do is to double check all my measurements and make sure i know all the exact numbers and where i currently stand before proceeding.
As i do not wish to waste anyones time with wrong numbers and wrong calculations before moving forward.
Again thank you Blair,Barry Falcon67,Captcobrajet and yellow truck plus anyone else i forgot.
I kind of wish now i had purchased the mahle dished pistons :-\ theres me thinking the flat tops and 76cc 427 medium riser heads matching the factory c7zx dual carb medium riser intake manifold would net me near 10.8.1 just slighty higher than stock 10.5.1  and would be ok.However you live and learn.
I will get all my measurements confirmed and report back. I will double check the rear axle ratio as well. The reason being the axle ratio is tall(low) The roads over here in the uk are more twisty and smaller and its normally short lengths of road for example 1 mile long road then you reach a roundabout or a T junction or a set of traffic lights. So unless you go on motorways(highways) most of the time the power is from idle to 5500rpm if you have enough road to reach that in each gear before corners, lights roundabouts ect.
So most of the time the power is need from idle to 5000-5500rpm.
Again thank you for the help and advice. One more question as well if i was to go hydraulic roller camshaft would that then mean i need roller rockers on the valve train. As i have had the original 67 shelby gt500 le mans valve covers restored and would like to keep them and use them as i was not sure if roller rockers would fit under neath the stock valve covers.
Thats why i figured stock valve train just upgraded with heavy duty shafts, end stands and spacers would be best and what with the rpm goal 5500-5800 max i would of thought that would be ok?
Again thank you all for your time i will double check my measurements and get back to you all.
Thanks again everyone. Stay Safe
Best regards
Dave
