should be good bearings-coated a plus----if detail needed check each bearing half with ball mic. at 9 points near each end and near center to be sure of fit--crank for taper/radii proper        clearance--like old carpenter measure twice-cut once----(before power tools for young guys info.)--------------oldiron

do not overlook  1960s 0em 427/428 performance spring pressures -- most in the 260/280 open pressure range     todays ramps/pressures much higher  -- along with low use of flat lifters ---     roller lifters may be more expense up front -- but look at time/cost to repair ---   few if any lifters are produced in quality/numbers of the past------ quality- reground cam people resurface lifters  ALL THAT I HAVE USED _SAY FEW OR NO PROBLEMS with  OEM lifters resurfaced and used along with newer cam grinds-- for mild builds maybe consider regrind and resurfaced lifters for cost saving and fewer problems---- keep any solid flat/roller adjusted on tight side -- if run on loose side you WILL damage -rollers for sure --john

x2 -my427- but add has seen some use how hard always ????- mag crank store the rods  -- i know they are used over many builds-- i have been running fe iron for 60 years now --orgional rods    may be ok - at min. check the web about 1-1/2 inch below pin some rods you may damn near see through-- over all the years a friend had a new factory side oiler short block --rod broke at about       first time at around 3500 rpm  almost no material in web- i had 390 do the same thing 2500/3000 on interstate same thing rod just no good also they have a life cycle-- store for a numbers guy but    do not possibly destroy a lot of good parts/work on a bad rod-- if you dont have a egg on the footfeed - use deeper front sump pan or accumlator or extra qt. at min and windage screen not flat tray   type-- good times w/fe-- john-oldiron

FE Technical Forum / Re: Detroit Lockers
« on: June 18, 2025, 01:39:20 PM »
do not (cheap out on a track build) use a spool and axels a little stronger than you may need-- if break/loose traction with power or speed on one wheel you WILL go for unwanted ride !!!!                     lockers do better on street/ road/or circle tracks-      p.s. i run my 67 fairlane in the 10s car can go high 9s -i am in my 80s- no do not need a suupid ride on broken axel !!!!

most repairs mentioned should work well- best for time/expense-i had a small marina/mercruiser repair service in wis. -repaired many blocks/ex.manifolds-  make sure you find the end of the      crack or any repair may not work well!!    drill- v-notch crack clean well - used devcon product-never had a fail-marine motors get the he-- beat out as may run at full rpm for long periods                  also same process  except heat area with a small torch-used small a/c welder with good cast iron rod-short 1/4 inch weld --peen a lot with chipping hammer (a lot) to repair -- never failed      the repairs were made from freezing people missed or did not clean drain plugs while getting mud in system in shallow water         john

with rollers always set to the tight side-- never loose-- some cam techs. will tell you a fairly large range tighter--set too loose and pound a roller is a good way to hurt engine--bad !

while it isnt nice to point fingers---if person assembled this motor can remain unknown hard /priced lesson--- shop i would note for others to avoid this costly mistake hard to see the expence of good parts destroyed by assy. errors like occurred---  oldiron--john

it would be interesting to see a real audit of insurance companys-must have some numbers out in the world-- no way things are not changing-- i have seen comments that Fla/Cal may soon be unsurable due to weather storms/floods/building materials etc!    far too much construction in flood/ storm prone areas !!  along the missipp. river southern wi rivers several small towns have been moved over the years due to regular flooding-but were were built in places 100 + years ago with poor/ no planning re. flooding --- 10,000 years ago i would be living at the southern edge of the ice that covered every thing to the north-- in the 1940s when i was a kid we could ski/sled over plowed fields much of the winter--now not for 50+ years---with natural or man added? warming beware where things are being built--- it seems best insurance deals are best/good rated insurance companys that are regional that do not have a lot of coverage in cal. and southeast coastal coverage where effects of weather events are the worst and high property values---property value taxes and insurance has been a pain here too SE MN.   john   old iron
