FE Technical Forum / Re: Rocker assembly selection?

The Lunati cam you show looks like their version of the Ford “B” cam.  I don’t know if this cam can support power brakes, so check that.

Thanks for bringing that up. For better or worse, I'm running non-power brakes. So it won't be an issue for me.
Funny story on that. I was driving the car (a '67 Galaxie) home from NC to NH after I bought it. I was in a heavy traffic, dense shopping area with a bunch of traffic lights. There was this modern audi next to me, light went yellow. I guessed I could stop, so I got on 'em. The audi went for it, but the light went red before he made it all the way through the intersection. What he didn't see was the officer on a motorcycle, stopped to turn left at the head of a line of traffic.
The officer looks over at my car (I had the window down), and asks me if it had drum brakes... "Yep. And they are just manual brakes at that." The officer points ahead to the audi and says " He could have stopped" flips on the blues and takes off after him. I laughed my ass off!

Thanks to everyone who chimed in on my question. I've contacted my "supplier" of all things ford and secured a pair of factory rocker assemblies (I will replace the shafts with new...).

FE Technical Forum / Rocker assembly selection?

Hello all,
I am still new to FE engines (at least from the standpoint of actually building my own where I can pick the parts). I am building a fairly stock configuration 427 and I'm looking to pick a rocker assembly. I don't know anything about them, and I'm looking for advice.
The basic idea is the 425hp factory build from the late 60's. So parts are stock, or replacements of similar specs. The cam is the Lunati "stock replacement" (#30331001, solid lifter, .324 dur/.524 lift), springs are single type, load rate of 342lbs/inch.
I built the engine that went in GT40 P/1046 (the 1966 LeMans winning GT40...) 4 years ago, and the shop I work for has built several engines with the same configuration. It dyno'd in at 495hp, and has run a few historic race events without a hiccup (fingers crossed!). We use the original Fomoco rocker assemblies, for correctness reasons, and have not had a problem so far.
When I took apart the 427 I am building it had the comp cams (blue) roller rockers with an end support stand. I have seen two sets of these removed from FE engines with broken parts. Is this a common failure? Is it dependent on cam and spring specs? Are they safe to use?

Thanks

Hello,
If you are still looking I have a whole engine's worth of them.

So... I'm building a 427 for a competition car. It would have had medium riser aluminum heads originally. It's important for the car to be as correct as possible, so I'm hoping someone out there can help.
Dates need to be between Sept '65 and Feb or March of '66. I'll consider any condition, and I am willing to pay fair market price, shipping and packaging charges.
Even if you just have a lead, or think you might know a guy... These are the last pieces for the engine (aside from distributor... see other post) and I've had no luck through my usual contacts.
Thanks,
Geoff

Geoff, How did you come up with July? The 5J4 date code is for 1965, September, and the 4th day.

Thanks for the reply. How you ask? Real easy... I pulled it out of my backside. Still learning the Ford date codes (clearly...).

Looking for a distributor for a transistor ignition system. Hoping for a date code in the Sept-Dec 1965 range. I have the module (a C5SF-12a027-B), if I read my date codes right it is a little early. It's a 5J4 (July 1965?), so I'm not opposed to a package deal for a better dated module, if that's what it takes.
Thanks

Thanks for the welcome!
Didn't see a category for this, but how about a little FE pron? This is the 427 that went into the GT40 I mentioned. It's sort of my project.... Right?

PS Sorry for the sizing problem on the pics, I'll fix that after work.   :o

PPS Resized, re-ordered, and added a pic of the engine in situ

Hello to all,
Being newly registered I thought I'd introduce myself and my project. Name is Geoff, I've been a professional mechanic for about 14 years now. I work on mostly vintage foreign cars, but a few years back I got the opportunity to assist with the restoration of a 1966 GT40 Mk2. I built the engine and transaxle, as well as a lot of help with final assembly and setup. Since then I've wanted to own something with an FE engine in it. So, last fall I bought a 1967 Galaxie fastback and drove it home from NC to NH.

It is an unremarkable car, but has lived a fairly good life. Some rusty spots, hood and trunk are the worst hit (inside skins) but floors, doors and frame are all sound.
Originally a 2v 390, with auto trans, as far as I can tell, the only options the car had when picked up at Gene's Ford, in Walla Walla WA was a power bench seat, and an AM radio. I've since removed the radio... found a real nice radio delete dash panel, and the radio didn't work anyway. The stock 390 was upgraded with an edlebrock intake, cam and carb around 10 years ago.

My plans for the car (which are well under way at this point), are a 4 speed conversion, change to a limited slip and 3.50 gears, and upgrade the front brakes to the period correct Kelsey Hayes 4 piston disc brakes. Obviously there are a number of minor "since you're here" items that will happen along that road.

Visually I am leaving the car fairly plain looking, and my personal ethos leans towards an NOS 1967 look, and parts when practical.

Long term plan is to rebuild and install the early '70s service replacement 427 I procured through work (was installed in a car that should have had a 428, so it became surplus when the proper engine was sourced and installed). The 427 is currently disassembled. It is a standard bore block with Lemans rods, medium riser heads, and the crank with the dollar sign cast into it (forget what that means, but I know it's the FoMoCo one to have). It will be topped by the Blue Thunder dual quad manifold, and a set of repro Holley carbs for an R code look.

Thanks to everyone that posts, and answers questions here. I've been here in the past gathering information, and looking for answers to some of the questions that have come up. I'll post a few more pics as the car goes back together in the next month or so.
