FE Technical Forum / Re: Rear tire flex and tire speed rating

Hmmmmmmm? I would think I would have a problem on one side if it was bent. My problem is identical on both sides and only rubs slightly when cornering. It seems to me the housing is moving or the s rated tires are flexing. I have read before that high rated tires do not flex as much and was hoping someone here might have had experience with this. Not saying you are wrong,I guess its possible. But this rear end was narrowed just a few years ago and has new Dutchman axles.

Thank you "Falcon67" Bummer I was hoping a higher speed rated tire would be a little stiffer. The housing seems centered to me. Both tires have the same clearance on each side while sitting in the garage, and both tires have the same slight rubs marks on the inside only. Outside sidewalls have no rub marks.

"TomP" The leafs are new but have rubber bushings. I guess I will try some polyurethane bushings and cross my fingers. I plan on removing this housing and axles soon for a different rim set up. The rubber isolators have been removed.

I hope these pictures are working. I can't figure out how to down size them.

Thanks Tom

Wheel wells are stock and hopefully in the next two pictures you can see where they are rubbing. Its a little darker on the area of contact above where I have rolled the lip in the best I can.

No rubbing at the rocker panel (outside of tire) at all. The clearance is almost the same on the outside so I don't know why only the insides rub. I found a tire that is 1 inch taller and not quite as wide but I don't want the rocker panel problem next, plus those tire are M/T and $225 each!

Bummer. I'm limited on even the tire size I have. I have only found p265/50R15 in Hankook "S" rated and a Galaxy R1 "H" rated tire by Vitour? Not sure if the Vitours are even good but I was hoping they would flex less.

I hear you on the lower profiles being much better, but I can't do that to this car haha

Hello,

I have a 64 fairlane with a narrowed 8 inch rear to clear 15x8 rims with p265/50r15 tires in the wheel well. I have approx. 7/8" of clearance inside and outside when sitting in the garage, however the inside of the tires (only)are rubbing slightly on the lower front inner wheel-well after driving it. Before I try a panhard or change the rubber bushings out to polyurethane to help eliminate rear end movement I was wondering if  anyone hear has experience in with going from a "S" speed rated tire to a "H" rated and how much flex can actually be eliminated. I don't need much

Thanks Mike

hbstang- sorry still waiting to see if I actually get those from my cousin. The crank has been ran but the rods and pistons are new. I don't have them to verify comp height but my notes say they are for the 4.125 stroke with the longer 6.2 BB chev style rods if I remember right(don't quote me on the length just yet) the big end of the rod is 2.330 and the small end (pin) is .975.

Dumpling- I might have a hm timing cover from a 427 high riser but no other hm parts at his time.

HvyFt4spd- here is a link that shows the crank rods and pistons I was talking about, The the other parts are not for sale or are being used. All these parts are from my uncles jet boats, They raced miller jets back in the 70s and 80s. All these parts have been sitting ever since and some have not been ran at all.

Thank you HvyFt4spd,

I attached a couple pics showing exactly what you have described. Thin casting line, not porous, and the oval pad. If you agree I will post this as an original holman & moody on ebay, and of course I will post it hoping to get the "stupid money" :) Other items I will be selling include the following some which I do not have yet(me and my cousin our dividing up parts that have been stored since the 70s and early 80s).
1. C3AE-H 427 low riser heads not sure if they were ported but someone took the time and polished the ports and the chambers.
2. 4.125 Hank the crank with never ran Bill miller rods and never ran aries custom pistons installed on them(2 extras). I think 4.250 bore
3. 427 $teel crank
4. eight C7AE-B re-sized rods with .030 390 pistons in stalled . Not forged I think they are silvolites they have 4 valve reliefs.

Thank you I did not know they are being reproduced and also did not know there was a high riser version. Im pretty confident this is the real deal and off a medium riser. I will have to do some homework on the carb spacing dimensions to verify medium vs high riser.

I understand and you are correct this came off of a flat bottom v'drive with a 427. Just found another one sold in 2014 on ebay for 2499.00? I knew this was rare but you are right stupid money? I guess I can start on ebay and see if I get that lucky. Its been in my family for years but that is quite an expensive wall hanger:)
