FE Technical Forum / Re: 1966 FE Galaxie Rear Suspension Advice
« on: September 27, 2018, 10:35:00 PM »
I've got a '66 Galaxie with the Spohn rear end setup and I think it's a pretty dramatic improvement over the stock system.  I haven't run a rear sway bar though, and I did change the factory springs for some from coilsprings.com that were 20% stiffer and +2" at the same time I installed the Spohn components, but for me the difference was night and day.  I should note that I did re-bush and dial-in the rear end with factory components prior to this swap, but that didn't have nearly the effect I was looking for.  The rear end was still loose and soft, even with fresh set of factory height springs.  If I recall, Spohn had a sale around Christmas, and I waited for that to save a few $$$
Hope that helps!

Thanks Jay,
After doing some research it sounds like Carl may be the only one offering the reman Holley carbs.  There hasn't been a lot of chatter lately, and his website hasn't been updated in a while, but he does still have the kits listed for sale.  I'll reach out to him once I get closer to finishing this thing off and I'll update here.  Great lead, thanks again!

Is Doug still in business?  I ordered a set of these studs, along with some rocker shaft end stands, a few weeks ago but the order status is "Awaiting Fulfillment."  I've tried email and calling, but so far no response, and the voice mailbox is full.  Anyone know an alternate email or phone number?

Yes, he is still in business, and I'm surprised that you haven't heard back from him, his responsiveness is usually pretty good.  I just got some parts from him within the last few weeks.  He is a one man shop, so maybe he had some family issue, I'd keep trying.

Doug got back to me and actually went so far as to overnight me the parts I needed to finish my build.  He's just busy and didn't clear out his voice mail.  All good now, thanks!

So I recently stumbled upon a 1963 390 with a 3x2 intake.  I ended up buying the motor mostly for the intake alone, but now I'm not exactly sure what I've got, or how to go about finish setting it up. The gentleman I bought the motor from didn't know too much about it, other than the previous owner complained about a coolant leak.  During my tear-down, I discovered a significant crack in the passengers side head on the outside between number 2 and 3 cylinders.  The spark plugs in 2 and 4 were completely torched and the freeze plug behind the engine mount was missing.  I also noticed that there was no thermostat when I pulled the waterneck, leading me to think that the engine was running hot in general and he probably shocked it.
Anyway, I dropped the short block off at my local engine builder (USA Machine in Nashville) and they're going to let me know what the prognosis is.  I already mic'd the block and it's a 390 that was bored .030 over at some point in the past.   Like most of you on this forum, I've got plenty of parts to finish the motor (at least in a 4v configuration), but what I'm lacking is any experience with the 3x2 intake.  There were no carbs with this engine, and I'm not exactly sure where to even begin looking to find the correct setup.  I'm definitely interested in both learning more, and tracking down a supply for the correct carbs.  Any help is appreciated!
