FE Technical Forum / Re: Max effort 390FE
« on: July 12, 2025, 01:30:05 PM »
I’ve never built a max effort 390 as I race 500” 427’s. But I’ve often thought a build like this would be cool. I envision it as follows: factory block cross bolted with 4.100 bore, 3.78 stroke. Pro port or FE Power heads. 16:1 compression, 2x4 sheet metal intake. 280-290 .950 solid roller, 8500-9000 rpm
Seems like 800hp would possible

Yes you can. I’m currently using one. I’m using an aviad spacer with a dry sump drive, so I had to machine that to fit. It may work with a stock 385 spacer. And of course verify tdc and timing marks

Very impressive! I may have to build a Tunnelport now!

FE Technical Forum / Re: BBM BLOCK OIL GALLEY NOT DRILLED

This is a pushrod oiling setup. I blocked the deck passages. Oil wasn’t  making it to the lifters at all, until I drilled out the upper galley

This is another confirmation to CHECK EVERYTHING when building an engine.
I wasn’t getting any oil to the topside while priming on the stand. Discovered that the top
Longitudinal galley was not drilled all the way through. Easy fix, if caught early.
I know this is common on 460 Eliminator blocks. Anyone run into this with BBM yet?

I love this build. My first 427 was a Tunnel Port at age 18. I sand dragged it in a ‘70 F250 4x4.
It taught a lot of 460’s and BBC’s a lesson. Came on like a two stroke lol. Tunnel Ports will always be the coolest. Can’t wait to see how the build progresses

Very interesting to see how all the intakes performed. I’m racing, so I’ll be going for the dual four high rise, but the fact that you can bolt together these parts with lower single four or tunnelwedge style intakes and make over 800hp is astonishing.

No visible damage to anything else. Everything was in place intact on disassembly.

KMcCullah,  This is a Kryptonite billet 4.125 with center counter weights and GRP 6.8 Rods. Bob weight was in the 1900’s. I’m glad you haven’t had any issues. But it would make me a little nervous. Upgrading to steel caps is probably a good idea if it gets raced much. Sweet trucks by the way

Yes, please post the pictures! I use my iPad for everything, and I tried converting the pictures to an acceptable format. But it’s still not working. I’m obviously doing something wrong. Thank you for the help.

Thanks for the replies. If you know others with the same experience, then I guess it’s “par for the course” with these blocks. Time for a Pond or BBM lol.

I had heard the same thing about the caps. I have what I believe are the second version of the cast iron caps. Much bulkier than the original, but not steel. I wasn’t completely surprised to find broken caps, but the cracks through the main saddles all the way up the cylinder walls, have me scratching my head
