FE Technical Forum / Re: Cooling system that works in traffic
« on: February 12, 2026, 07:12:20 PM »
I just run a mechanical pump with a small cvf pulley 160 thermostat I also drill more 1/8th holes in it I think I did 2 extra holes + the one hole that came std with mine I use 2 derale fans my radiator is not the best choice but it was what I had at the time it is 29x19 or close to that I am right on the limit of radiator thickness and one day I will change it to a crossflow type and have a much thinner radiator with better cooling. 105 deg c day mine will sit at 190 to 200 @2800 to 3000 rpm on the highway and it will pull temps back to 180 in less then the time it takes for a set of traffic lights to change. My raised highway temps are due to my fan and fan shroud not being deep enough due to space If I could get an inch more depth in my fan shroud I think that would not happen. But it works very well I also have a full opening size A/C condenser in front of my radiator.

If people don't think 220 is hot then what is hot in a street car?

Get the biggest radiator you can fit crossflow best and bigger pump like Jay said you could try lowering your fan starting temp too I would start at 160

I hope to do some testing over the weekend to see what rpm I need for a good idle before I can start making a custom bracket

Here is a pick of the out of the box bracket It is not even close

5
Which compressor are you running? Don’t rule out getting it done,(solenoid), using Ford parts.

Sanden sd7h15 they are a heavy duty 7 piston universal style pump.

6
Engine combo is pretty spicy I had it out on the weekend for a real test in 40deg c weather everything worked great except for the idle when a/c was on.

Here is some pics it looks like I could fit one on the rear carb but like you said I dont think holley makes a bracket to suite what I have.

I think on the back carb would work and that would hide the ugly solenoid as much as you could

If you get keen drew and want to invent something PM me maybe I can donate some holly brackets. I think if I cut there 4150/4160 bracket up and reweld it may work but I can see the mounting screws being right in line with were the solenoid needs to be.

That was my idea lol.
Otherwise just run the idle a few rpm higher. 25-50rpm shouldn’t change the usability I wouldn’t think.

I have already bumped idle up 200rpm form 800 to 1k I don't really want to bump it too 1200 as it is only a problem when A/C is on. when everything is up to temp when you pull up to a set of lights it will want to idle down to 600ish rpm and want to stall.

8
Would be a bit crowded.
You can always just run a manual choke. If you don’t want the choke plate, leave it, the rod and shaft out.

It is only for when my A/C is on and car is at idle to prevent stalling Drew. If you have some idea's on what may work it would be great.

Has any one used one of these on a fe 2x4 intake with 4160 carbs and factory style progressive linkage any info would be a great help.

I use aldan american double adjustable front coil over conversion on my 66 fairlane

The only thing I was not happy with was they use a 3/4 inch T-Bar and a 1 inch od lower neoprene bushes and in I had problems with crushing the bushes. They did try and help But the things they got me to try just would not work. I ended up fixing it my self by getting some hard self lubing bush material and making my own and I also added a large support washer now I have no problems.

I use koni adjustable rear shocks you just compress them and turn them from soft to hard I set mine in the middle

I get quite good ride quality for a lowered heavy car.

I would for sure go front coilover kit there is a bunch of good options around.

Only thing I would say is set your car up at the ride hight you want and measure front shock length mine would of been better with a custom length shock.

I am thinking hard about converting my 482 to a sohc the part that scares me is getting a parts list. Who should I try for a list of what I need I am not in the USA so that adds an extra layer of problems.

I'am thinking 20k and 12 months should be close to find all parts instock and buy them dose that sound in the ball park?

Really?!  That is terrifying.

Have Canton T pans always been that size?  This one is about 20 years old.

Yes pretty sure they are all 7 quarts for t-pan +1 to fill filter
