FE Technical Forum / Re: electrical connectors
« on: January 07, 2024, 02:10:24 PM »
I bought two Spal fans which have connectors on the end. I've been looking for them and can only find them with 8 feet of wire for 49 bucks each I need two. The part number is SBL-YAC-PT which comes with 8 feet of wire for 48 bucks each. I believe it's a 40-amp plug. I'm tempted to just cut it off and move on but it would be nice to be able to unplug them.

I searched this website for that part number and came up empty - they list a Spal adapter but it is different.
However, there are a whole bunch of options for sealed connectors you can build, or different terminals/connectors if there is something you prefer. Nothing here is discount or cheap, but the quality is there. I have purchased custom-built battery/starter cables and they are top-shelf.
Lots to look at here, and they make specialty fan relay kit$$$, but probably more than you care to spend.

I used to plow a lot of snow in my '74 F250. Most of the time with an 8' Fisher angle plow. I used to look forward to winter storms.
This is what happens when a kid has access to a welder and an old town plow. 10-1/2' wing to wing Frink plow
That thing would move incredible amounts of snow (in a straight line) but was tough on front axle spider gears.
This is the blizzard of 1978 in NW Conn.

(Warning - 'Old Guy' trip down memory lane ahead)
Yes, things have changed quite a bit since then.
I can remember riding the school bus to school with chains on the rear duals and the snow banks being level with the bus windows.
Lately, school is cancelled the night before if 4" of snow is predicted. Half days if it starts snowing after school starts.

Northwestern Connecticut approx 1960-61.
I'm the kid sitting on the hood/fuel tank of the Hough Payloader.
Back then this was used quite a bit to open up roads in several neighboring towns.
My uncle built a fuel tank between the V so he could raise the plow and refuel to keep going.
We don't get that kind of snow these days.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Re: Rush!
« on: September 13, 2021, 06:53:14 AM »
I listen to a lot of different styles of music, hard to pick a favorite..BUT.....in the last couple years I have become a huge fan of a rock band from Mexico - The Warning.
3 sisters that started playing rock when they were very, very young. Their cover of Enter Sandman in 2014 when they were 14, 12, & 9 put them in the public eye when a video posted for their grandparents to view went viral.    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1boUYB9LFJY

They don't play a style of rock that can be pigeon-holed into a category, it's just great rock. They are also big Rush fans.
Since then, as an independent band, they published an EP and 2 LPs, one of which is a 'rock opera' (while still in their teens!).
They are now signed to a major label with their 3rd album due to be released.

They just this past week released another cover of Enter Sandman for the Metallica Blacklist compilation. Metallica asked many artists from different genres to pick a song from the Black Album and create their own version; "Play it backwards, turn it on it's head, we don't care" said Lars.
They worked with a pop singer from Canada, Alessia Cara, to create a version of Enter Sandman that is incredible. Not at all a carbon copy cover, but their own version with an amazing video.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Later starter on 63 Gal with cast shorties?
« on: July 17, 2021, 01:03:43 PM »
The ONLY reason for bringing this back to life is to update the information.
On the other forum the question of OEM Ford starters with the terminal on the end cap came up.
While I was answering the question I found out that the information I had previously provided about Wilson Electric was a dead link.
I found a new link      https://www.wilsonautoelectric.com/PartDetails/Index?partId=68e03477-74d3-42b0-b045-31d8817535ab   has a lot of good info

This starter question comes up from time to time so I figured I would add in the updated and valid info.
Back to your regular programming......

FE Technical Forum / Re: 428 in a Highboy
« on: February 06, 2021, 08:40:53 AM »
Just to pass on some info on my install.
I put FPA headers on my '73 highboy chassis, 428, C8AE-H heads.
At the time I ordered them there were two options; 'short drop' and 'long drop'.
I ordered the short drop, I was overseas at the time and wasn't able to look at the chassis.
The short drop headers pointed/ended directly at the crossmember that is under the bellhousing.
I was able to scallop out the crossmember and do some metal work to where it looks good and didn't lose 'much' strength, but it took some time.
I looked at the FPA site but it seems that there is less info posted, probably need to contact them if you are thinking FPA.
The headers themselves have held up great, but the right side header needs to be removed (bit of a project) to change the stock starter.
I have pics somewhere but don't have an account on any picture hosting site to post them here.

Thanks, Ross, I was happy to be able to get them to someone who will use them. A pleasure working with you to make that happen.
Sooooo glad that they didn't get beat up in transit, ya just never know about those freight handlers....
This latest storm kept me busy for way, way too many hours... ugh.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Re: ATF TYPE FOR C6
« on: January 25, 2021, 08:05:14 PM »
I had the one for my 4x4 F250 done a couple years ago and asked if I could still run Type F on the new parts.
On the most recent build the fella told me that unless it was going to see a lot of heat, Type F would be fine, otherwise a syn might be better.
I guess the newer fluids withstand the heat a lot better?
Many, many years ago I had the trans done for snowplowing and always loved how it shifted after the shop got done tweaking it.
(It saw some pretty harsh use with the plow and never had a problem)
I have a decent cooler, don't tow much, and don't plow anymore so I went with the F and am still very happy with the shifting.

FE Technical Forum / Re: To Run or Not to Run Dog Days of Winter
« on: January 18, 2021, 06:42:45 PM »
I have my highboy pickup on jackstands in the garage for the winter and about once a month I'll start it and let it run in 4x4 for about a half hour. Did it yesterday, actually.
It comes up to 180 water temp, but not hot enough to burn off the bad stuff like a good drive would do.
I do it mostly to keep the driveline and auto trans lubricated and keep everything splashed in oil.

Interesting, Marc.
Before Covid locked everything down (and before he became a new Dad) Ben was hired to do camera work all over the world for different projects.
He sort of put his own projects on pause in order to make some money with his cameras.
I guess he has a good eye for filming.
He has good gear and also got his commercial drone license for camera work.

Thanks for the kind words, Marc! I still take it out from time to time, usually when traffic is light.
And I can't thank Drew enough for sorting out the carbs, made a huge difference in driveability.

I just wanted to get back in here to brag on my nephew, Ben, that filmed, edited, and did everything for that video.
He was trying to get his name out in the world for his film company, that is one of the very early videos that he did and to date, still the one with the most views.
He has followed his dream of making documentary films and last year he and his team won an Emmy for Best Research on their documentary about the Native Americans in Maine and their
treatment by the State in years past; "Dawnland".
Very sobering topic and film, he was over the moon to win the Emmy.

Sorry, had to get the plug in for him....back to normal 'car stuff'.

Pretty close on the name Doug!
Yeah, that's mine and thanks to Drew it drives really, really well, only a street car for sure.
It sat for so long due to my moving out of state in 1980 and then taking overseas contract jobs for most of the 90s that kept me out of the country for up to 14 months at a stretch.
I did that contract stuff on and off until 2007 and never really 'lived' in one spot during that time.
I had no garage and had to beg space at my brothers' place when they had space available. When they needed the space, it went back outside.
There have been some minor improvements, the most noticeable was some new upholstery and a new package tray, but things have stalled a bit (again).
I'm more likely to take my truck during the summer.......still worried about someone banging into me. Seen too many bozo moves on the road.

EDIT - I don't belong to any picture hosting site but Drew is welcome to put up the one I sent him from my driveway: I did get some decent used bumpers and the correct poverty caps from Steve D.
I  guess I have made a few more improvements than I mentioned....
