Yeah, sorry that's aussie dollars,  around  $660US.

This may be a stupid question but can I run the solid setup on a cam designed for hydraulic?   I've been looking at longer duration cams to suit this set up but they are all going to push the torque band further up the rev range.  Currently running a Comp 262H.  I like the sound of the Comp 282S but it may become a dog around town and suck fuel on the highway. Motor is +030 428, ed rpm heads, performer intake, shorty headers,  2.25 exhaust, compression is around 10.2/1 (180psi cranking pressure).

Is anyone running a similar set up with a 282s?  What's your experience?

Phil.

Good excuse to change to a longer duration solid cam too, me thinks ;)

Phil.

Can't argue with logic like that.

Thanks for the replies,  Seems I may have some quality parts coming.
FairlaneGT427...  good idea I will need to check,  by block was decked .010 but I don't know what was done prior to my ownership.

Yes Jared,  there is one pic of the rockers studs by themselves and the longer two appear to be necked down,  They maybe too long for my edelbrock heads though, the stock longer rocker bolts were too long in there.

Gents,

I just "won" this on evilbay hoping to cure my noisy hydraulic lifter problem.  Is it good quality?  obsolete? value for money?

OK you scalawags, let me make my first post a leetle clearer. I wasn't actually referring to them nailing a big motor from Dodge, but the idea of building that Charger with a motor home 440, throwing it into a beater with no interior and one window, and wompin' the bejeezuz out of it on dirt roads. If you didn't see the end of this episode, it is headed back to the dirt course with the new engine aboard. That, to me, regardless of where the motor came from, is just too kool fer skool.

Totally agree with you there FElony!!  Roadkill is my most favorite youtube channel, by far.  New ep this Friday ;)   Must admit it was better before Dodge sponsorship  tho...............

The way I read the original post, he doesn't have adjustable rockers.k

I also note in a different post he mentions that the cam is an XE which could be part of the issue with a little clatter?

G'day rockhouse,  you are correct on both counts it's a XE262H, stock rockers and non adjustable push rods.  Thats why I was measuring the rods  :)

What is your inital timing set to?  Also, what are you running for cables and a battery?

G'day Ross,  Initial timing is set at 8 to 9 deg,  I can't go any higher due to pre-ignition when I open up the throttle.  Remember I was asking about DCRs a week or two ago,  the compression is way high for 95 octane fuel. The cables, power and earth, are 1/2" copper I made myself. (I used to install batteries in telephone exchanges for a job) The battery is 625CCA and new.

All good info old gal. My 427Stang has some good questions to and maybe some compression and cam specs

Hi Stangman, static compression is 10.25 to 10.5:1 (depending on which calculator I use. Cam is a Comp XE262H

Thanks Nightmist,

I did toy with that idea,  I thought I might leave the oil drain plates out and see what if any difference that made.  At least it would give me a gauge on how much material to remove.

Cheers

G'day Stangman,

I'm in Australia so I went with a locally made CAE unit.  They have a good reputation over here.

No issue with the starter engaging. Interestingly, the pinion teeth do not travel all the way through, there is a stop (for want of a better word) at the engine end of the pinion to prevent it over shooting the ring gear.  I test ran it before final fit with some grease on the pinion, it doesn't travel to the stop but does engage fully with the ring gear.

The gear reduction end is prolly around 1/2" from the collector but the motor end is around 2 1/2" away from the nearest tube.  I may fit a heat shield to this one later to protect the investment.

Cheers,
Phil.

PS,  she's a manual.

Gents,

Just an FYI.

With my recent 428 build and once I got her running I had an issue where, due to heat soak, the engine wouldn't crank when hot, not fast enough to start anyway.  I was using a re-manufactured stock starter with Sanderson shorty headers, there is around 3 to 4 mm clearance between the two.  No room for a heat shield.  I read on here and elsewhere that heat wrap could help so I tried it out, this is what I found.

Prior to heat wrap I would have to wait 15 minutes with the bonnet open on a 30degC day for the starter to be cool enough to spin the motor.  Check with a IR temp gun straight after a drive I was seeing around 250degC at the starter housing.

After heat wrap, in similar weather I only had to  wait 4 minutes with the bonnet closed to be able to crank.  IR temp gun straight after a drive was showing around 150degC at the starter housing.

Conclusion,  IMO,  heat wrap helps but in my case did not help enough.  I bit the bullet and bought a clockable "high torque" reduction drive starter.  No issues starting now, hot or cold...

G'day,

My fresh rebuilt 428 has, what sounds to me like, valve train noise but only when hot.  When first started she idles smooth and quiet, around 750 rpm (mild cam).  Once warm she rattles like a banshee mostly on the right bank but a little on the left too.

Yesterday I pulled rocker covers and check valve geometry.  I'm using Edelbrock RPM heads, straight out of the box and stock rockers and push rods. The wear pattern on the valves, both sides, were towards the outside indicating push rods too long. I made an adjustable length push rod but can't get the wear pattern to the centre of the valve, when the adjustable rod gets to around 1/10th" shorter than the existing push rods the rocker looses contact with the valve.

While I was in there I noticed the right side doesn't flow as much oil as the left, they were similar when I checked when the motor was still on the stand. Oil pressure is around 65-70 cold and drops to around 20 @ idle hot.

I'm thinking the "budget lifters" I got from Summit may not be up to the task....

What do ypu guys think??

I'll try to take some video today and post a link later if you think it will help.

« on: October 09, 2015, 02:59:54 PM »
Thanks Ross,

The original post was a little rushed, I've now gone and found some real numbers.

The pistons are advertised at 10cc chambers & 10.2:1 SC, the heads are advertised at 72cc, bore size is 4.165,  the rest of your assumptions are spot on.

I think you are correct about the carb being open too far but she stalls below about 1100 rpm(no tach),  I recon the carb idle circuit is working the mixture screws make a tiny amount of difference.  I'll try your suggestion about giving it more initial advance and take it from there.

Thank ya mother for the rabbits!!
Cheers,
Phil.

« on: October 09, 2015, 01:35:19 AM »
Gents,

I've finally got my 428 running in the 64 Gal but she's got some issues.
 Some background;
The motor is a 69 428 A scratch block with Edelbrock performer RPM heads and performer manifold.  The pistons are TRW 14cc? dish and the cam is a Comp xe262h (inlet valve closes @ 57deg ABDC.)   The only carb I have suitable atm is a 650 DP holley that ran great on the 390.

At first startup she was running real lean and after shut down, 10 minutes, it dieseled till i chocked it with a rag.   found the carb bolts were loose and restarted,  not so lean now but still dieseling after shutdown.

Went to Wallace racing and used their DCR calculator which says DCR is 8.48:1......  Is this too high or should I chase a larger carb?

PS I'll check DCP in the morning when she's cooled off a bit.  Any help is greatly appreciated...

Cheers,
Phil.

When I had a spare minute I did a little body work.  I'm happy with the results,  not bad for an amateur.
