FE Technical Forum / Re: 410 mercury question

C-6, mild stall, 3.25 gear....mainly just a street cruiser, with the need to smoke a tire occasionally.  Guy is a fe junkie and has had several fe powered fords through the years and is building this car as his last hoorah.  The pistons in the engine had a fairly deep dish with no eyebrows.

FE Technical Forum / 410 mercury question
« on: April 09, 2019, 07:42:56 PM »
Went directly to Jayb first and he told me to pose it to the forum.  Building a 410 fe for a customer, has already been built previously and bored .30 with dish pistons. Customer is putting it in a 57 ford and wanting to add some pep.  Is there any off the shelf flat top pistons available or something that will work?  Engine will have edelbrock heads and rpm intake.
Will a 390 piston work?

Thanks,
Brian

From the little I drove the car, literaly 150Ft, it doesn't seem like it has much of a stall if any, and the paperwork with the car doesn't show one.  Only that it's a built c-6 with a manual valve body.  Will check the convertor for brand and size once the engine is removed.

Jay--I was thinking the same on going with the Performer RPM, the cam will need to be a flat tappet hyd.  Budget doesn't allow for a roller, having to purchase a new steering box to install while the motor is removed.  The heads are c8oe with the n.  Haven't gotten the engine out quite yet(damned rusted header bolts!!! anything besides anti-seize to put on the new bolts during the install?) so don't know the cc's on the chambers.  Car is a c6 with a 3.91 gear.  The cj heads will have to be reused, just wanting cam/intake suggestions.  I know there has to be something better than the current Melling grind in the motor, it's probably 20+ year technology.

Freshening up a 428cj in a customer's 67 GT500 clone and he is wanting to pep it up a little from current specs.  Motor was built about 14 years ago by a mustang shop in ATL, using TRW forged pistons, B&B, Edel 427F manifold, & a Melling hyd camshaft specs: 514 lift both sides with 300 Int(misprint on supplied paperwork?), 224 exh.  Intending on installing a updated camshaft definitely, possibly a intake also?  Block or heads one were decked and the current manifold was cut, and don't know if the customer will want to spend the money to cut a new intake.  This is a weekend car show/cruise-in motor, want be drag racing I'm pretty sure, just wanting some more pep in its step.  Needs to be a hydraulic, off the shelf.  Intake suggestions welcomed also.

Thanks,
Brian

Thanks for the reply Jay, love your car's!! The two four' s won't work as the local reds will definitely scream race car if the hood is raised. I don't think the heads have had match work done other tan the bigger valves, gasket match on the intake, and a little porting on the exhaust. Will have to replace all the exhaust valves in the c8 heads as the touched the block and bent(390 from a friend), the cj heads will need all new valves as they were installed in the 406 heads our race car. Really trying to put this engine together as cheap as possible as I will have to put the car together also. Keep the input coming.

Haven't decided on the cam either, taking suggestions on that also.  On the intake, really looking for something(best choice if possible?) that will work ok on the 406 but would work better on a stroker(445 or bigger) in the future.  Have been thinking port-o-sonic or street dominator, but was wondering if their was a better choice.

New member to the forum, but have been around fe's for close to 30 years now.  Dad was a tech at a ford dealership 60-70's and owned a 69 mach 1 428 drag pak car he bought new and raced for many years, towing it with his 51 ford truck sporting a 427 low riser. Looking at putting together a 406 from my dad's fe engine stash.  It's a .30 over true flat top with a trough cut valve relief, using c8ae heads with 2.15/1.66 valves, have a set of 428 cj heads that could be used if they would be better?  Will go in either a 67/8 coupe or a 70 mach1.  Will see 80% strip/20% street.  Local track has a true street class running full interior, alt, stock suspension(will use cal trac springs and bars), drag radials, etc.  Wanting around 400hp or better on the motor and will fill in the rest with asthma meds.  Currently running a port-o-sonic with the 4500 pattern on our current drag car(.60 over 428, 304s comp, 406 heads).  Wondering what intake would be best for this set-up with the ability to upgrade the long-block in the future?  Any input is appreciated as it's been about 8 years since we built the motor in the drag car and don't know what the new stuff might be?

Thanks,
Brian
