FE Technical Forum / Re: Storing engine for winter
« on: December 13, 2014, 08:43:36 AM »
Thanks for the feedback. Good to hear from some other Canadian FE guys. I'm in Manitoba myself.
Good to hear that I am going a lil overboard with this whole thing. Better that than too little I suppose?
Do you guys recommend turning motor over by hand every once in awhile so springs and valvetrain isn't in same position all winter and to move pistons from sitting in same position all winter also?
What about rotating engine on stand 360 degrees to get some oil from the sump to move back up through engine and such.....
Or am I just getting a little ridiculous?

Jared.

FE Technical Forum / Storing engine for winter
« on: December 12, 2014, 09:05:27 PM »
Hey guys I'm looking for advice/ suggestions on how to prep my new rebuilt stroker engine for winter storage.
I live in Canada and temps can reach -30F where I am but more realistically I'd say -10-20F on  avg or -15 to -20 C temperature outside. Inside garage probably around 5-10 F at worst.
Motor is currently on engine stand in my garage. Unfortunately I do also park a vehicle that I use during the winter in the same garage.
I know temperature swings and moisture are my worst enemy.
Motor has only been run on Dyno and then drained all fluids. I blew out water from block and filled with antifreeze.
I have 5 qt's of fresh oil in engine for storage and new filter.
Engine lift plate, breathers taped and exhaust ports taped off.
I put a small squirt of oil into each spark plug hole and turned motor over by hand a few revolutions.
Should I fog cylinders?
Should I spray foggin oil over valvetrain/rockers?
Should I rotate engine over every couple weeks to keep rings/springs from sitting in one place for too long.
I'm not sure to wrap engine to keep moisture out but at the same time could be trapping moisture in as well. Or just cover it with a thick moving blanket?
Just want to protect my investment as it hasn't even made its way into my mustang yet.

Any tips or suggestions from the  FE guys would be much appreciated.

Thanks Jared

FE Technical Forum / Re: carb spacer question

I have a 432 stroker with a porter streetmaster and saw good  gains in horsepower and torque by adding a 1" open spacer under my 750 Holley  Dbl pumper.  Had increase with a 4 hole spacer too but the open spacer with the ported streetmaster plenum was the best for my motor.

FE Technical Forum / Flexplate / reinforcement ring question???
« on: November 14, 2014, 07:38:24 PM »
I am about to put my FE 390  stroker motor and C6 together and am not sure about weather I need the reinforcement ring that goes with the flexplate or not?
I have a flexplate off of a 1966 390. It looks to have the markings that a reinforcement ring was used with this flexplate.
Now the 390 flexplate is neutral balanced. I am assuming that the reinforcement ring would also be neutral balanced as well.
At this point I don't have a ring but am thinking I should have one for added strength.
Is there anything else I'm missing here?
I am using a block spacer plate between the motor and the bellhousing as well.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks Jared.

FE Technical Forum / Re: My 431 stroker Build and Dyno

I appreciate the educational info Jay. As I have previously mentioned. This is my first FE build and was and still is a learning process. Either way this motor has exceeded my expectations and am looking forward until next spring to get it on the road as I live in Canada and we will be getting snow any day now.
I am building a C6 with a 3000 stall converter. Do you guys feel a 3000 stall is adequate judging by my results?

Thanks

I have the cam card now from the builder and the specs are nothing like any of the combinations I've seen before from comp crane or luniti.
The guy who provides these custom camshafts for my engine builder likes to keep the info on his camshafts quit.  Doesn't like to share the specs.
After seeing these specs and how they are quite different than your traditional cam specs I believe he has found a unique combination with my build that has resulted in results that aren't common for the traditional stroker build.
What I will say is it is a large split duration( large split between int/exh) and has more intake lift than exh.
Also the static compression came out at 10.3 higher than the anticipated 9.8
I also think that it is possible that the Dyno could be a " happy Dyno" and my results might be a few percent stronger.
He does have a weather station in the ducting and it was set at 60F and at sea level. Standard correction.
The Dyno is a land and sea Dyno-max "pro"
I tried posting Dyno results but it says my image is too large from my smartphone.
Hopefully next season I can get some time slips that hopefully back up my Dyno sheets.

I will try to upload Dyno sheets. My motor and Dyno was done through a very reputable shop who build and run race cars.
As for my build I don't have a print out of every detail of the build yet.
They did do some head work on my edelbrock heads but have the same size valves. Do not know the flow rate.
Cam is a custom grind specific to my motor by their camshaft guy. I don't have specs but it does have a lot of duration and under .600 lift.
I never asked what the actually conpression rate came out at or what my edelbrock heads cc out at either.
Just know the scat stroke kit was a 9.8 dished piston with 72cc head I was told.
My streetmaster intake was port matched to the Edelbrocks and the plenum was cleaned up and polished as well.
I know this motor was blue printed very well and by the responses maybe more was done than I put forth on my right up.

For comparison

32 timing with no carb spacer.
507 HP @ 5400
566 TQ @ 4400

34 timing
526 HP @ 5300
578 TQ @ 4400

36 timing with 1" 4 hole spacer
538 HP @ 5400
583 Tq @ 4400

36 timing with 1" open spacer
547 HP @ 5400
601 TQ @ 4400

Sorry my first post saying my first pull was 488hp was at 32 timing without carb tuning.  After tuning and at 32 deg it started at 507ho and 566 TQ so only 40 HP and torque increase with timing and carb spacer.

My engine shop just completed the build on my 390 strokes to 431.

1968 block bored .30 over. Oil modifications.
4.125 scat crank with 9.8 comp dish pistons.
Custom  grind hyd flat tappet camshaft
Edelbrock 60069 heads with pop shafts and stands. Factory rockers.
Streetmaster port match to edelbrock port sizes.
750 Holley DP mech secondaries.
Windage tray and factory oil pan. High volume oil pump.
Msd distributor.

Started timing at 32 total.
488 HP and 525tq
Advance timing to 34. Gained more HP and TQ.
Added 1" open spacer under carb and ran timing to 36 total.
For best results at
547 HP @ 5400.  601 TQ @ 4400 rpm.
Real flat torque curve stayed a over 500 tq from 2600rpm.

Defiantly exceeding my expectations. I was planning for 475hp /500tq

This motor will be going into my 69 mach1 with a C6 and 3.91 rear.
Should be a lot of fun.
Thanks to all the guys on their help to answering my questions throughout the summer.
This is my first FE and I can't wait to get behind the wheel.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Streetmaster and Edelbrock heads port match?
« on: July 10, 2014, 01:39:22 PM »
I just finished doing a mild  port job on the Streetmaster. I took approx. 1/8th" off the sides and top and tapered it back  into the port
The plenum I took out the corners and smoothed it out. I hope it helps.

Which of the two helps the most?
opening up the plenum ( help above 4000 rpm im guessing)  or port matching the intake ports?

Either way I hope it helps get me a little more horsepower and torque.

Thanks for the advice Joe and Jay

Len,
Since you are running the same heads, are you also running the stock rocker assembly too?
Did  you put in rocker studs?
If I can find the extra cash I will buy the pop end stands and rocker shafts but may have to just use my factory set up for now.
Blew my budget already on stroker kit.

Thanks for the replies.
I do t have the cam specs yet as I am getting a custom ground can to suit my motor but it will not exceed .600 lift probably in around .550 range for lift.

I went the Stroker route
I have my engine down at my engine builders and have decided to go with a 432 stroker kit.
I am using a 1966 block which has never been rebuilt. All original.
Machine shop is doing oil mod's to block.
HV oil pump and HD shaft, milodan windage tray and stock pan
432 balanced rotating assembly with 9.8:1 pistons
Cam will be custom ground hyd flat tappet to motor spec as they use a custom camshaft guy. Custom length pushrod TBD
I am using 72cc  Edelbrock 60069 RPM heads fully assembled. Oil restrictor installed. may need to open up oil return as these heads are from 2003 ( in new condition though) (Guy I bought them off used them for a few hundred miles and then changed them out for a cast set and then they sat back in box for several years)
I am planning on using my stock rocker assembly non adjustable 1.73 rockers. They appear to be in good shape still. Motor only had 50,000 miles on it. I would like to upgrade the rocker assembly but Im already way over my budget. I know there is some shimming to fit on Edelbrock intake valve position.
I have an unported Streetmaster which I am planning to have port matched to Edelbrock ports.
650 Holley dbl pumper flown to 830 cfm
6114 Hooker Headers with 1 3/4 primary's
MSD Dist and ignition
Motor will be broken in and run on the dyno at engine shop.

-The factory rocker assembly is probably my weakest point but does anybody have any experience running Factory non adjustable rockers on Edelbrock heads?
Is there anything I should know going forward with this?
-Do I still use the factory oil drip rails? Will they have to be modified to fit on Edelbrock heads?

Any feedback is welcomed. Pros and cons.

Thanks, Jared

Excellent. Thanks a lot Jay for the info.  I have not purchased your book yet but it is on my to do list.
Looking forward to installing my engine once its built in the coming weeks and feeling  the power of my first FE in my 69 Mach1
Thanks for the advice.

Thanks for the quick reply Jay.
If you don't mind me asking.
How much HP and torque would the difference be between port matching and stock streetmaster to Ed heads from your experience?
I am putting thus combo on a 432 Stroker.
As far as opening up the carb plenum, those results will show more on mid to top end rpm as opposed to low end torque. Or am I wrong and it will also help at low rpm as well.

Sorry to be a bother, still learning the ropes as this is my first FE engine.

Thanks again
Jared.
