Well I bit the bullet and bought a Rattler cam from Howards. If it works awesome if not I`ll try another cam next winter. Heres the specs on what I got.adv duration 289/297, dur@.050 235/243, lift is .548/.548 and lobe sep is 109. Needs 9.0;1 comp and 2500 plus stall. We shall see what it does in my 69 390gt motor. I am slowly gathering all the pcs to get it together for the FE race at Beaver.

Yeah I hear alot of bad about the Thumper cams. I dont argue about what works and what don`t. I have a story about a Thumper in A very mild roller 302 (it had good heads thats about it) in One of my Mavericks that people would argue up and down it wasn`t true but I had time slips. I would have never ever thought that motor in that car would have worked as good as it did. On junk pep boys radials thru the full exhaust with a 2500 stall and 3.55s. It went 2.0 60fts, 11.70s at 117 all day. It had no low end but when it got past the 60ft it was pretty impressive. Oh the car was 2845 with me in it so it was lite but Mavericks are. I by no way saying Thumpers are good but that one worked well in that combination.

I don`t post much but read alot of what is posted on here to learn what I can about the FE. Has anybody tried the New Howards Rattler cams. I know they are trying to compete with the Comp thumper cams which people seem to not like. But the Howards numbers seem pretty decent atleast from what I read works in these FE motors. Thanks

I`m gona run the American Racers on my 54 this yr they make the old bias letter sizes, They have a L-60/15 a G-60/15 and a 295-50/15 which is close to a M-50 thats the one I`m gona use. They have a website with all there sizes and tread compounds. Me and my friends have used them for yrs on are street cars they hook well and have some tread so if you get caught in the rain.

Wow ok thanks guys good posts to this thread! I know that I messed up the first time with my truck manifolds and dual 1 7/8 pipes out the back that's why this time its getting done rite ;) I `m not sure if its gona get a h-pipe or not probably yes. I like x pipes and have done a few on my mavericks and 5.0L mustangs. Just with the 54 I`m trying to keep it period correct for a late fifties to mid sixties build so the Xpipe def does not have that sound. If it fits I think 3inch is the way I`m gona go cause my end goal would be to put a 6-71 huffer on the car way later in life.  Muffler wise I know some may hate them but true 26 inch case cherry bombs. Unless I can find NOS old school thrush coffee can mufflers at a swap meet or ebay. Loud yes but cool as all heck. Any way thanks for everything Chris

Hi all, been awhile since I posted on here but read alot of your posts to learn about these motors. I`ve been gathering and gathering pieces for my 54 with the 390 and now looking at pipe size for exhaust. Does anybody run 3inch or is 2.5 big enough for a lets say 400 hp 390 not that mines making that now but one day it will so I don`t wanna do exhaust for the third time. It will be over the rear and out the back with a set of headers not sure yet if there gona be FPA`s or I try and make my own with the speedway FE header kit but it will have headers. As always Thanks for any help on this and can`t wait till next yrs FE race and reunion

FE Technical Forum / Re: oil in itake
« on: August 23, 2014, 10:28:05 AM »
Ok we checked clearances on intake to head and block they were good going by the FE book. So we tried a Performer RPM and it did the same thing after a few minutes of running its pulling oil into the intake and making alot of vacuum at the valve covers. We are stumped so the motor is coming out and were gona recheck heads and rings. Any ideas on other things to check while its apart that would do this????? As always Thanks for any help
