FE Technical Forum / problem with figuring out installed spring height
« on: December 18, 2014, 09:49:20 PM »
I posted a time ago about 482 tunnelport build in my 40 Ford coupe. After getting engine back in my car,I've had nothing but problems and now have pulled engine out and had in the hands of old mechanic and engine builder friend, who should of did it in the first place.Problem seem to be all valve train related. 1 broken Harland Sharpe rocker, broken rocker shafts ,3 broken valve springs as well as 4 bent push rods after very little running time. Now the guy who built it "from Washington state"I think totally messed up the valve train. Bought a new complete Harland Sharpe rocker assembly rockers and shafts and now need to figure out valve springs and push rod length. Cam is a custom ground Oregon cam roller mech. with .660 lift and am looking for corresponding valvesprings and push rods to go with this set up.old push rods code show them to be a old seal power unit with a length of 9.375 inches. and would like suggestions, but most importantly installed spring height measured at 1.820. all the spring that I Can find start at 1.900 and 2.000. the heads are Dove aluminum tunnelports and trying to figure out if my Manely valves are too short.the springs that were in the heads are supposed to be Iskys. Another thing I don't under stand is why the guy who orginally put it together put .060 shims in with the springs. We figure that we need springs with about 225 lb.closed and about 600 lbs open. What I'm trying to figure out is, are the Dove tunnelport head different than any other style of head when comes to installed height. Any suggestions are much appreciated. Thanks Konrad from Alberta

Jay, If you had come up with this a little earlier I would have been very interested. I just put out 15 K usd into my 482 tunnel port build and will risk a divorce if I do another motor next year. That all being said, put me on the list if you do come up with a SOHC kit. could alway sell my tunnel port set up and covert my short block. Once again like so many others, sorry to hear how Drag week turned out for you, top shelf part failing has got to suck.

Feel kinda dumb, plates are on the primary side, jets are on the secondary side. oops.My buddy look at me like i was a retard when told him i was looking for plates for the secondary side. said "no, secondaries are  on the front and are  jets on every Holley he ever seen" and it finally clicked.Primaries are a little rich but secondaries are really rich. He gots a friend who is an older fellow that is the local holley guru that coming by thursday night to tune the carbs. motor and rad are in now.picking  up oil and filter  and should get it fired tonight. hopefully no major leaks as we regasketed the oil pan and had to put acouple of heli-coil in front timing cover after dyno run after we checked a couple of the berings to make sure all was ok. my  local car show is this week end and should make it, which was my major goal.I have a lot of friend that are expecting my car there.Konrad,

Thank you Jay for your input, very helpful and kinda confirmed what i thought. Not real easy to find secondary jet plates here and want to tune it for the weeend. Got engine dropped in last night and back tonight to hook it up and get it running if we can find all the fasteners, it been close to year since it came out. didn't know if this crazy but I talked to a guy who said JB weld the jet offices closed and redrill them to what you want.does this sound crazy or would it work.

Got back late last night, with my 482 tunnelport. Crossing the border was crazy, they went thought my whole truck to check if I was smuggling anything illegal. First I want to say the BBM block is a winner, cost to machine 350 bucks, no decking or alignment bore. Just a straight block with no sealing issues. A matter of fact the dyno shop had just built a 496 fe stroker using a Pond aluminum block the required almost 1900.00 of machine work just to use the block. Let just say they where not impressed.Any how got the engine in the back of my truck and going over to my buddy's to drop it off ,so we can get it back in my 40 this week. Now the dyno said we made 544 at 5200 and 560 torque on 92 pump. We are trying to figure out why the cam stop building power at 5200 rpm. There are a few things like my old Harland Sharpe's are worn and need replacing and the carbs need to drop 4 sizes on the jet plates on the secondary side, or maybe we missed the cam altogether. Its a Oregan cam custom grind mech. roller to go with my 10.5 compression diamonds flat tops that Ken recommended. makes alot torque down low but i was hoping the cam would build power to at least 6200 rpm. more to follow as I will get futher into cam specs and Dyno numbers. But I feel that there more potential power to be had from this engine. Not disappointed but hoped for alittle more. At least we didnt hurt it or kill it on dyno. Konrad from Alberta, good to be back home

Heading out this morning to BC for short holiday and on to Washington state to pick my 482 ,after a few small set backs the build is finally done. Scheduled for the Dyno for wednesday down in Seattle and bringing  it back to drop in my 40 Ford next weekend. Hopefully all goes well and it makes the 600 hp that we were building for. New Bear iron block ,steel 4. 250 Scat crank,Diamond flat tops, aluminum Dove tunnelports and tunnelport dual plane quad intake . My S/O shit the bed about a year ago to the day and has been a long and boring summer with my 40 sitting in the garage with an empty engine bay. will take some pictures and film to document the run and one day figure out how to post it. Have alot of money wrap up in this build,so lets hope the dyno goes as planned and no problems getting it back to Canada. wish me luck, Konrad from Alberta

The problem is not getting parts into the states, it will be getting it back into Canada with the finished engine. The Sentinels guarding the gulag which we call Canada is who I'm worried about. Some parts bought, some old parts traded for credit with my small engine builder might be end up being a head ache when I cross. Harper wants his cut and could make this a pain in my ass when I go to pick up engine in July

FE Technical Forum / BBM Block arrived
« on: June 04, 2014, 12:03:32 PM »
Drove down sunday to Washington state To meet my engine builder Dave and see my newly acquired BBM block. Talked to Doug last Tuesday and bought block, he had it crated and shipped off the next day to Washington arriving Friday. Doug was great to deal with. The block is a very stout looking piece and will be a great foundation for my 482 build. It will be heading to machinist shortly to get checked out as well to deck and hone. It looks like a very nicely cast piece. I'm also switching my cast iron tunnel ports to aluminum Dove tunnelports along with single plain 2x4 intake to dual plain 2x4 for a little more low end. Going have it Dynoed down in Seattle hopefully by end of the month and back in my 40 Ford by mid July. I will let you guy know what Machine shop report about block but at first glance looks like a well done piece. I took some pictures with iphone and will try to post. When I crossed border on monday The border guard looked at me like I was nuts asked why "I would drive 750 miles to have someone build a motor".I told him "becuase its not a small block Chevy". Thank you for replying to my post, I'm need as much as I can get from my parts as I'm now starting to fund a complete stroker rebuild. Heads in at Barrys and most likely going to need a complete short block to go with heads.

Accidently placed add in vendor classifieds, Pat Mason built Ronco Vertex mag with blue Taylor solid core plug wires and Moroso mech. tach with tach cable. I said offers but have already been giving grief over not putting up a price. looking for 1000.00 or give me an offer. Let me know what you think its really worth or what you would be willing to pay. Its for sale and not sure whats its worth as I been told widely different amounts. It came with my 427 tunnelport and have converted to MSD system
