FE Technical Forum / NV 4500 behind fe
« on: July 13, 2013, 07:47:40 PM »
An nv4500 will bolt up to an fe with an adapter plate. Advance adapters makes an adapter plate to mount a dodge pattern nv4500. I'm gonna use a late model Chevy 4500 because I wanted the fixed rear output. I have to change over to dodge input and non hydraulic throw out . A dodge is pretty much a bolt in with the adapter.

Hope this helps.

The baby is doin well. 2 weeks old tommorow.  We had a boy. A 9# boy to be exact. Momma is doing well too.

Moving to tn Friday.  Well the family is, I'm already here.

The truck hauled another load from Atl to Bristol last weekend. Even in it's tired oil burning state that 390 is impressive. Can't wait to get the cash flow together to build it or a 445.

Next time I visit I'm gonna head down to griffin to "swap howdies"

Ross,

How does float level affect how quickly mains come in. I could understand have more fuel to use before needle opened, but not sure how that woukd affect quickness.

Fwiw,

A guy I know was spouting off about his 4.6 cobra at a party one night. He drove it there, it sounded like a turbo'd 4.6. He said 1200hp. I chuckled.  He then showed it to me on a chassis dyno at the shop that built it.  It was about 1180 at the rear tires on race tune. He drove that car everyday to college for as for as long as I knew him.

I spoke with Doug on the phone.  He's a cool cat.  Once this baby shows up, I'll be able to go check out his cars and chat with him in person.

Thanks again

Doug,

I believe we have actually already left each other voicemails.  I'll try to give you a call back this afternoon.

I prefer the gels as well. Little more expensive but works great. On my Harleys the gel seems to work better than the more liquidy type.

I also agree with scotia. Were their any indications on either side of the flywheel that would indicate it not sitting flush?

Just did the duct tape test. Both sides bulge out a good amount.  I honestly think I have a bunch of blow by added to a couple valve guides/umbrella seals going bad.

The baby is due anyday now so unfortunately the truck is gonna have to get driven burning oil or not.  I plan to rebuild this winter, but I'll keep a sharp eye on it.  Ive never jus dealt with a problem but I've also never been married or had a kid.

I've learned a ton from this thread tho. I really do appreciate all the help.

FE Technical Forum / Interesting find
« on: June 09, 2013, 10:18:31 AM »
This morning while everyone was still in bed I took the truck out for a good run. Went to see my great uncle where he's been resting since 99. It was nice and cool out and the truck was real happy. But smoked a good deal on hard acceleration.

Got home and checked it over. There was oil around the breather and pcv caps. Like a decent amount. Not just vapor splash but like a good covering running from them to the bottom of vc.

I pulled the plugs and all but #4 were showing a PERFECT burn. Best it's ever shown. Number 4 was nasty, oil deposits, a horrible black color but no wet oil.

Cranking Comoression is still the same across the board tho.

So either I have a trashed oil ring or the intake is leaking at the rear, correct?

Thanks again

So maybe I should pull the intake and see if the intake gaskets tell a story? The plugs don't tell any oil burning story.

Should I do a leak down test first?  Even with the 20-50 it blows a big ol cloud of blue smoke if I dig into the secondaries quickly in 2nd.  I can't imagine it being rings considering all cyls have the exact same psi.

My 390 was rebuilt in 85. Well something was done because it's stamped 5-25-1985. On both heads.  I pulled the pan and regasketed it and did the same when I put the 4v intake on.  I don't see any oil around the ends. I used Toyota fipg and the cork. I have a crossover intake but I blocked it off with sheet metal the thickness of the gasket.

How would I go about finding a non visually detectable intake leak. It's a big ol nasty cloud of blue when ya stand on it.

Also why would plugs 1&5 be showing a lean or to hot of plug condition but the rest show an ok mixture? Could that be a sign of a leaky intake manifold?

Thanks again

Don't you have to pull the pan to change the pump driveshaft. In a truck that means pulling the engine.

I can't get a picture of the plugs to turn out. #1&4 are light grey to white, the rest show a tannish brown. There are a couple that have deposits.

I have no vacuum leaks and no oil seeping anywhere.  I have noticed that if the breather and oil fill caps are off there is a fine mist of oil coming out. The baffles are all in place and the vc's are spotless clean.

From pcv outlet on carb spacer to Oil fill cap. Jus like the factory intended. The pcv was suspect so I replaced it.

Mine blows blue out of both banks under heavy load or quick acceleration.  Ive been working it hard lately so it's been using its fair share.

How many quarts does a truck pan hold. None of my service manuals state how much it holds. 5 quarts brings it to full mark so I'm sure it's around 5.

And now idle oil pressure is 50psi. Is that ok?  U know these are Druid questions but I would hate to lose an oil pump.

Thanks again

Jay

I have no clue about the engine other than its a 2u crank 390 built in 69. There are no other numbers on the block except the date stamp.

I believe it may be a truck engine. It runs good and is super quiet and smooth. That's why I was afraid to put heavier oil in. I didnt want ti accidentally kill the oil pump.
