Mike it's like this do what you feel comfortable doing. Now this is a fact fe rocker stands walk the way i stop that is pin the stand and shim to the head. Now it is a pain to do. A lot of fe builders do the same. I also know of couple engine master engines over years that was pinned or doweled,or some thing like.

i used 1/2 copper water pipe as a backer and tig welded the holes then pull out the copper made for a great repair.

I have sonic mapped hundreds of fe blocks. I like the c4ae blocks. Most of the time c4ae block have thicker cylinder walls but always sonic map so you know. Buy the block if you need one

Block machining cost is the machining cost new block or old block. So for me total cost its just the price of the block is the difference.
