FE Technical Forum / Re: Shelby standard block question

Y'all keep talking, just makes me hate 'em more.......LOL
Something doesn't sound right with this whole argument.  If what some of you are claiming is true, no new car manufacturer would build an engine with aluminum block and heads.  I know they are on a weight savings mandate to improve fuel mileage, but the easiest way to improve fuel mileage is compression, and good fuel.  Also, if Lance Smith did R&R the internals from an iron block and install them in an aluminum block, did he blueprint the aluminum block just a carefully as the iron block, did he use new rings, bearings, did he heat the oil, water, engine cycles to the same amount before testing?  Did he do this on the same day? Weather the same, barometer the same?  Etc., etc., I have to say that with all my years of experience, automotive degree, teaching experience, have I ever heard such an argument that cannot be substantiated with back to back dyno testing in a laboratory environment to eliminate all differences but the material used in the block.  A simple gasket mismatch in the intake tract can change the horsepower level on a highly tuned engine, and I have seen 20 hp difference back to back with that situation on the dyno.  I have also seen 20 hp difference with spacers turned around differently, or different timing, fuel pressures, different oil level in oil pan, all make differences in back to back horsepower testing to find the ultimate combination.  A carburetor not opening fully and not caught when installing on the dyno.  I have to call this an argument that I cannot agree with until I see it performed under the same testing environment on the same day with identically prepared engines, and have all the same pulls to break in, all the same temperatures, and same individuals monitoring the testing procedures to verify.  JMO, but skeptical to say the least at 20-40hp level.  Joe-JDC
So what is the fact its well documented that they burn oil??

I will chime in here..I have a all alum fe in a resto mod mustang that i have been running for about 12 years and appox 50.000 miles..It has been blown up 1 time dropped a valve.  And rebuilt two other times because it burned oil..As we speak car uses about a qt every 400mi..I have tried every thing i know to fix it.different rings.honing ect ect..So at this point on this engine it been driven for appox 20.000 mi runs perfect hauls ass
i just add oil..believe me i hate it..I have pretty much given up trying to fix it.

stats on car 67 F/B shelby gt 500 car weights 3100 w/o me in it 477in all alum fe
blairs pro ports and victor with fast xfi sportsman EFI

FE Technical Forum / Re: Need help building my A/F and Spark Tables
« on: September 25, 2017, 10:40:33 PM »
your v/e table might not be that far off...In your program you have some what fast calls AE tables they make a big time changes TPS rate of change makes the biggest..dont mess with the MAP rate of change...The best way to do a stick car is to do 3rd gear runs in 500 rpm sets...your sets will evolve as you learn....turn learn off.. The real and best way to do a tune on this deal is take your car have a tech set your targets on the chassis dyno real time .Once you have your target numbers you can street tune it  I can tell you this on my set up...FEs like fuel BIG TIME..When you have your car tuned on a chassis dyno it really takes all the quess work out of it

I would not be so fast to kill this unit as i see it..If you can put the sportsman ECU on this deal i think it would be a cool setup. With 100% laptop tuneablity..Just have to make sure it has right size inj for your app..

Easy Clarification, don't put Self Learn systems on anything that has less than 10" of vac min. Don't put a self learning system on something with a cam lobe center of 106-110 generally it will have too much overlap and not enough vac. If someone wants to be successful with a self learning system they should be building a mild street engine with a mild cam that makes lots of engine vac and a good sealed exhaust. Cam lobe centers in the 112-116 being better, preferably the 114-116.

Again 427 is spot on..iM 62 been tuning carbs for 40 years im done.Once you make the jump you will never put a carb on anything.. As far as tune think of it like this.. if you can think of ot you can try it..Its a hot rodders wet dream..

Here are the downsides...$$$$$$$$.....And it can drive you crazy if you are a perfectionist....Like me.

I x2 on what 427 said.I have spent the last year turning on my 477 fe.Have a fast sportsman unit in mine..So what i have learned is i am done with carbs .Once you get it you will never turn back.As 427 said if you can think of it you can do it. My cam is 240@248 @ 50 and it idles at 800rpm smooth... almost to smooth...Downside$$$$$$$$$$$$.

Ok i installed one on a 67 mustang. The throw out bearing mounts to the transmission. Its not a FE thing. There is a company name of modern trans carries different set ups..IMO it well worth the money for a smooth easy clutch..  The master hooks right up to were the old clutch rod hooked to easy easy...been in my car for over 9 years not one issue about 50.000 miles.

Well i have to chime in here..I run a 477 in fe street deal..I had a set of well preped edelbrocks. On the bench 290s at 600. Engine came off dyno at 582 at 6000. Your run of the mill hot sreet deal. I had B/P build me a set of his PRO PORTS . The car on my butt dyno is about a 75 or more hit on H/P.It pulls harder everywhere.... Fron idle to 7000 rpm it just keeps pulling..Big time difference..By the way it got a soild flat tappet deal ...Jones cam..600-240-248..The edelbrocks were a set of barrys

Funny i am reading this and dont care one way the other.I have a center force dual friction set up. Car is 3100 lbs without me in it. Off the dyno at 580 hp .clutch has gone through 3 engines. And 9 years.. It has over 40.000 miles on it. It will still light the tires up in 3rd gear. So i guess i just got lucky.

This is a reply to jay..Its easy as to why the interest in self tuning Efi. Its a great replace to a carb in todays world with fuel issues. As for my own car i had a highly tuned pro-systems 950 carb..With the Efi i gain about 1 to 1.5 mpg..Cold start running .no comparison.. From idle to WOT. All areas better IMO..The throttle response is off the charts..Anyway back to jay it money a true Efi system will set you back a few $$$..If you do the full on holley unit with a return system and gas tank for Efi it will set you back 5-6 k The manifold injectors and wiring harness then you need the throttle body. Not sure about exact numbers about 1800.00 if i remember right .  Over the XFI system...

Stang 427 Imo i find that most cars that run under 10 ins..Let me be clear here will it work . YES.  But will it work as advertised i say no. The O 2 only sees average you dont have a O2 on every cyd.. the thing i see is basically it is a electric carb..That is really the reason a dual plain manifold does not work very well at low speed because the long short  runner deal.. It just dumping fuel some rich some lean causing the o2  goes crazy. Now throw in a 250  cam at 50 now the reversion starts most of the time i find it to be at 2000-2500 that is biggest problem area. Most of the time that is were most cars run around on the street. If all i had to worry about is idle and WOT it would be a piece of cake. Hey the other thing is how picky you are. When you do this for a living they have to be in 95-99% perfect..  So will it work yes..Will you have driveibilty issues yes!!  IMO
