Is there a way to archive this obscure on the Internet for free? What are the costs of preserving content, however trivial, for eternity?

There are sites like the Wayback Machine - now https://archive.org/web/ that store much of what was out there - but you have to know to go look for it there.   Having the content available and actively served requires someone to own / host it.

I believe Spooky Truck was Barry Gauleger (sp) . He was more active on the old network 54 FE Forum.

I believe his name was Gaugler. He mentioned at the time, many years ago, that he had to move on from the forum and website. Never gave a reason that I remember. I also have a list of old links and while going through them a while back, I came across his page of forum members cars, so that page is still up also.

If the page of forum member cars is the stuff found here: http://spookytruck.net/Opening_Page.html  then it is the copy that I'm currently hosting.

Who here remembers Spooky Truck?

Many years ago I bought http://spookytruck.net/ and copied the content from what I remember as an AOL or Yahoo page or something like them to that domain.   There was a ton of great old FE related content there and I believe that in that moment it was going to be lost because the family could not continue to host it.  If my memory serves, the family was having some medical (and maybe financial) issues and I bought the domain and hosted it for them so that the content / history would not be lost.

Well - it seems I'm an internet packrat... Fast forward 10+ years and I'm cleaning up my hosting stuff (now that they are no longer charging me just $5/year per domain) and I stumbled on this site.   As it was then - I think that there is some cool old information on the site and I don't want it to be lost - but I also don't necessarily want to keep ownership of the domain and content.

So...
* Does anyone here have contact with the family of the folks that used to (and hopefully still do) own Spooky Truck?
* Any thoughts regarding other FE related sites that might want to take / host the content as a museum piece?   8)
* Other suggestions that would result in this not being lost content?

Thanks guys.  I found a local guy who offered to trade me some much smaller packrat stuff... everyone will be happy I think.

FE Technical Forum / To Scrap Or Not To Scrap
« on: March 04, 2019, 10:26:18 AM »
I’m a pack rat by nature, but I need to make some room to work.  I have two short block FEs both of which have had a loose wrist pin that has put a deep gouge in one cylinder wall.   One of the blocks is a d3te 390 that I bought as a build candidate and the other is the 352 out of my ‘65 Custom.  Both blocks are already .030 over and have basic stock(ish) rotating assemblies.  I hate the idea of scrapping these but I can’t sit on them and don’t expect that I’d want to build either one.  On the other hand I want to be sure before I put them in the bin... Thoughts?

Thanks all - I'll take a closer look before assuming that it is the main.

FE Technical Forum / Rear Main Seal Replacement
« on: January 12, 2018, 09:33:37 AM »
Well - I got my jalopy running again after 10+ years.   Within a couple of miles it developed a rear-main leak (well down the back of the block - so I assume) and by the time I got it home it is almost a stream (drops every inch or so as I pulled it up the driveway).

So - a couple of questions...
1) This is a 352 in a '65 custom - do I pull the engine or try to do this while it is in the car? I understand that it "can" be done either way - but I'm not interested in trying to do it in the car if doing so means being a contortionist.
2) Napa has 2 piece replacement seals - do I try to find an old rope type replacement or just go with the new style - or does it depend on what I find when I get the cap off?
3) Any other "gotcha's" about doing this? Other advice?

Thanks...

FE Technical Forum / Re: Radiators that for Desert heat
« on: January 12, 2018, 09:22:32 AM »
I'm in the Phoenix area (Desert Hills / New River) and my '65 / 352 was my best friends daily driver for about 5 years when we were kids.   Pretty sure it has a <insert your local "cheap" parts store here> sourced radiator and neither he or I ever had cooling problems with the car.   This is with a simple arc of sheet metal over the ancient "flexi-fan" acting as a shroud.  He drove it daily in city traffic and we spent many 100+ degree nights idling in creeping traffic while cruising Central.

I'm not suggesting that going cheap on a radiator - when I replace this one I'll probably do some sort of overkill aluminum unit - probably from Ron Davis or someone like him - but I'd be pretty surprised if a mild 390 would cause problems for an OEMish radiator if you get decent airflow through it.

Just my 2 cents...   :)

Shrink in popularity... yes... die... no...

My 17 year old is considering starting a project that will be flat-head based.    I'd bet that 100 years from now there will be gearhead kids out there that see a video of an old thunderbolt on a tear and say to themselves "I've gotta get me some of that... "

Didn't mean to take over the cool steam engine thread..... I get excited about big machinery.

No problem here - this stuff is the same kind of cool to me... :-)

So actually - I'm torn between laughing at the dude strolling next to the thing yelling in dutch or german or whatever while the tractor moves slower than the speed of smell...

...and....

...thinking that that is one of the cooler motor-sports vids I've seen in a long time!

I'm guessing that this is old enough tech to predate even the mechanical old-timers here...

I've seen a few people looking for Streetmasters - and I've heard that the prices are way up... no clue if this is worth pursuing - but thought I'd share in case it is / was.  It is on the other end of the valley from me (about 50 miles) but is someone is serious about them and wants a first hand once-over - drop me a line and I'll see if I can get out and look at them.

WAAAAAYYYYYY  O/T - but I had to say it....

fryedaddy... that period in the title... the one right after the word "man" - kinda makes the title read in a way that makes me snicker every time I read it...

I guess my living out the the ole axiom "you can only be young once - but you can be immature forever" is on full display...   Just had to share my chuckle...

My tired old 352 ran at 10 PSI at idle and 30ish when up on RPM.  This bugged me so I went to 40 weight then 20-50 - and now it runs at about 15 PSI at idle 45 PSI up on RPM.  I figured I'd be building something bigger anyway and if the thicker oil somehow shortened the life of the engine it would be an excuse to get off my duff and build something.

FE Technical Forum / Re: 427 Stroker Article in May Car Craft
« on: February 28, 2016, 07:07:41 PM »
They forgot to include the two itty bitty 56MM T4 Turbos that are completly tapped out at 3K RPM?

I am FAR from an expert on these engines - but it does seem pretty incredible to have numbers so out of line with norms ...  it is also really sad / odd to see them do a 427 as a stump puller...  I'd not be surprised if the authors of the article were not born when that motor was in production and didn't take the time to actually familiarize themselves with the engine family.

Seems like a great opportunity for "someone" who lives in the FE world to offer to provide a better example for their next article...
