FE Technical Forum / Re: Why aren't more people building SOHCs?
« on: September 24, 2014, 10:39:47 PM »
I think if I won the Powerball and money was a non issue, I would go find a nice 55-57 Chevy and drop a CAMMER in it. Just to piss off the Bow ties. And so I could tell them it was the only way I could make it go faster  ;D  And even then with the CI a BOSS engine can come up with is amazing. And I have to be honest if a person got that to seriously hook up that would be a fun ride.

But it does come down to $$$ While I am still waiting on my wedge heads for my 427 stroker. it was the way I chose and I was going to part together a cammer one by one over time. But the cost of a seriously nice Powerstroke truck came to mind and I said screw it. And if done right you can come fairly close with a wedge. Granted would I ever beat a cammer? Most likely not. Will I have fun with my 527 wedge yes. I have also heard that the cammer has the ability to run a much larger 4.75 crank in it. as the cam is no longer a contact point. But even then, that brings in a VERY custom crank.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Roots supercharging a Ford FE?
« on: July 27, 2014, 01:36:32 PM »
I think a good book I have read and done most of my research from is street supercharging. I forgot who wrote it as someone loaned it from me and it never came back. But as I understand it on a roots system it gives more of a bottom end punch. A centrifcal supercharger is mor mid range power. Roots types are right there off idle and are not real suited on top end like the others. I think its becaise the design is similar to a turbo. Just a hunch. Now something to consider is E-85 as a fuel it can withstand the CR much better in a boost application than what Gas does. go to E-85.com and do some reaserch you will find some guys have gone to 40PSI!!!! This means you could build a engine that would be a normal NA engine and just put your supercharger on it. Save for the cam events you want a wide LSA. As the boost would push your un burned gas out the EX with a overlap situation. Now if your not in a area with E-85 you are on the right track. But there are many old versions of the JIMMY 6-71 with the lip and thats the pre cursor to the B&M AND AFTERMARKET 8-71 ect. these companies have made copies of those, thus there parts interchange. If you find a core like this you can get a cheap economical blower. As you said keeping the revs down also mean syou do not need crazy Stell cranks or Hbeam rods ECT. I think as long as your keeping everything under 6k Forged pistons and rpm rod bolts would be about it. even for a 390. The Weiand 7282 and the cousin OFFY 360 2x4 make the easiest intake to put a plate on. I know I made this intake for a FE BLOWER combo. Sold it at Jefferson swap meet here 2 years ago. But once you have the 2 just make a plte to bolt one way then the other. ALSO Note make support stands L/R of the carb mounts as the bloer take alot to drive it. Anyways.DYERS in Chicago will make you ANY custom drive you want or need. You do not need the 3"TOOTHED NHRA TOP FUEL style drive you see most folks running for a 8-10 psi set up. Just talk to them. You can get by with far less. I had a small supercharger one time on my 2V 351C Mach 1 2" serpintine belt. And it would clobber a 69 Green 428CJ GT coupe yes coupe "built up" back in 1990 he put more soup to it and still walked over it although he was hanging with me better :) . I mean it was not even in the same zip code I would granny shift and walk off with him with the stock 2v cam and 3.00 open rear. But that gives you an idea of what a roots does for bottom end. I later put a OD toploader in it and a better cam in it. It then would do 140-145 in Montana when they had that reasonable and prudent speed thing they shut down soon after When the Germans would come to vacation here to drive Montana instead of the autobahn.

Hope this helps.

FE Technical Forum / Re: piston to valve clearance
« on: July 07, 2014, 06:24:10 PM »
So what would ya do pump up a hyd lifter and check it out? What I am building for this "TRUCK GUY" is a 67 F100 2wd 390 2V cast piston so its 9.5 CR roughly Lunati 30507 230/240 @.050 585/600 LIFT grind CJ valves A heads RPM intake 780 holley Are the particulars. Should be a fun little truck with 3.91 gears. He wanted 3.25 but I told him with the tires he wanted 235/75/15 to grab a bit more gear. Or a bit more stall. As he is still hauling a trailer he went with gear.

When I cut the 3 angle seats I didn't go far it was more to get the larger valves in.

I know this is somewhat subjective as to valve size. But lets say a CJ set of valves on Std eye brow cut pistons. I know some Mfg's are slightly off but at what cam lift does one really need to start to looking at this. So far every HYD cam I have run was under .600(my 30507 was small valve A head) and never ran into issues. But I have a up and coming juice that's going to push things here and was wondering where that edge is.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Rocker Shaft End Supports
« on: June 30, 2014, 07:08:33 PM »
Here is what I have had happen in this area. 30507 LUNATI CAM has .585/.600 lift .230/.240 dur @ .050 Now I ran stock shafts broke, replaced with HD shafts broke as well. Ran end stands with stock shaft, was low on funds and thought why not try it. IT worked!!!! I was kinda amazed to say the least. I later bought the HD shaft but I did learn something. But anyways I think and this is my guess that the wiggle or fatigue is what gets the shaft to break. The support stand limits the wiggle and thus the stress/metal fatigue that breaks that end off. If your on a budget and had to pick between one or the other the stands are more important than the HD shafts.

Like Cody says those 390's don't make much power with iron heads do they, proving you don't need alloy to make power ;D Nice job

WOW what a nice product Jay!
From my knowledge of my 351C4v /Boss 351 days(my first love) the best manifold for that engine witch may not translate to the FE exactly due to ci and all but it was the torker/II intake  Just throwing it out there. That's kinda why I thought that street master intake back in 05/06 (pre intake compare book testing)when I was in Iraq watching the other forum was going to do well on the FE. They are kinda similar, low profile single plane's.

Well the E-85 likes 14:1 in a perfect world.
I will guess add 45FT TQ and 20HP

If your going to replace valves anyway the cost between the two is not much($20) I would go with the CJ valves. Cause what do they really hurt at low lifts? And ditch the SP2P for the T intake. Much better than the SP2P unless your going to MPG.

I have Harland Sharps myself, and now that they are mentioned at what point are they good for?

FE Technical Forum / Re: 390 sled puller build
« on: August 05, 2013, 02:15:38 PM »

As said, you need to have a good balance of HP and tq.
And a friend of mine who is a big Ford sled head said "make as much as you can as wide as you can" for pulling He used to run TP heads on a 454 combo and he said it was great when he could hook up and keep in it but one pull out of the throttle and he could never get it back cause the old TP heads would never have any bottom end. But today we have those updated Felony heads that flow as much as TP heads on top and as much as a CJ on bottom end flow so it's the best of both worlds in one head. Also I am with Cody here and would just add a nice roller cam you can hit some serious profiles you could never hit with a juice cam. Also you can deck the block side to make your CR as needed, wedge does have it's place.
