Hi Royce

Not to change the topic, but what transaxle are you gonna use?

This problem of catastrophic rod bearing failure in the L87 is particularly interesting.  There have been cases of it happening in engines with a few hundred miles on them.  And not just a few claims.  There is talk of a recall affecting over 800,000 vehicles as well as class actions being filed.  GM has been disappointingly tight-lipped about it, although that's to be expected I guess.

The 2019+ general motors L87 6.2L V8 has been having some very well publicized issues, and may involve a rather large recall.  One of the issues has been lifter failure secondary to the AFM (active fuel management) cylinder deactivation feature.  This problem has been around since the previous generation of the engine and many people deactivate the AFM function and have no issues.  My 2017 Callaway Silverado with a 6.2 has AFM deactivated and I've had no issues in 80K miles.

The problem I'm most curious about with regard to the newer L87 is the reported catastrophic rod bearing failures.  I'm sure OEM rod bearings are what they are, so it's unlikely to be a bearing material issue, correct?  I suppose the most logical explanation for rod bearing failure would be an oiling issue.  That being said, it's hard to imagine an egregious design mistake being made with regard to a fairly simple oiling system.  Does anyone have any thoughts?

I was hoping to replace my Callaway with another one, but I'm not going near that engine for now. >:(

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Re: Question for guys who have been to PRI
« on: December 03, 2024, 02:14:36 PM »
I've been to both SEMA and PRI as an interested spectator, not a builder or industry insider.  Although I love anything shiny that involves engines, I can tell you that PRI became a bit repetitive after about 6 hours.  I mean, how many pistons and rods can can an amateur really look at?  I'm almost ashamed to admit it, but I found SEMA more engaging overall and spent two full days in the exhibit halls.

Yes Jay, that's correct.  And your heads too, lol. Hell, the original timing pointer was the only OEM Ford part on the engine.  Now that's gone.

IW has had this setup for quite awhile.  I've just never seen it used.

I saw this item at PRI this year and decided to get one.
The first picture is the original arrangement, which was fine.  The IW unit is pretty sweet though.  Needed a bit of massaging, but all good.

I looked at doing a GT-40 build before I ended up doing a Cobra.  The problems with sourcing a transaxle that could survive behind a big block scared me off.  What are you using, Royce?

I'm one of the deviants doing a build with Jay's heads and a hydraulic roller, and I agree that it perhaps doesn't make a ton of sense from almost any perspective.  Except for coolness factor.  Honestly though, the motor I built back in 2003 has e-brock heads that were ported to within an inch of their lives by an outfit that doesn't post here...couple that godawful port velocity with a lousy cam choice, and you get a lazy, frustrating engine.  So Jay's heads, and especially his cross-ram intake gave me a great excuse for a do-over.

I've documented the entire build in pictures which I will post once I have the upper intake.  Jay did revise the lower intake to accommodate the slight but significant intake pushrod angle difference secondary to the higher pushrod cup of hydraulic rollers.  As always, Jay has been incredibly meticulous and responsive in resolving an issue that is unlikely to make up a large portion of his business.

And it fits perfectly.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Steve Morris Engines Cammer build.
« on: November 17, 2023, 10:41:23 AM »
I've enjoyed Steve's channel and his drag and drive engines sure are impressive.  However, there was an episode seven or eight months back where he introduced a bunch of new projects, including an Audi V10 and the cammer.  As soon as I saw the block sitting there and the word "cammer" came out of his mouth, my first thought was "this isn't going to end well" lol.  I also remember thinking that he is either one of the most well-versed engine builders on the planet, or that he had no freakin' idea what he was getting into.  Survey says...?

I've had a one wire from PA Performance in my Cobra... I've replaced it twice in 8 years for heat related failure.  Cobras tend to have pretty high under hood temps, but that's kinda lame.  Definitely not using that particular unit on my new build.

Any of our FE vendors going this year?  I managed to snag a couple of credentials and am flying to Vegas on Tuesday.  I've never been and am pretty excited to check it out.
