Private Classifieds / Re: Value of 390 Super Marauder engine parts?
« on: February 05, 2015, 09:50:29 AM »
I had a 65 falcon winter rat that I drove a 100mi. commute every day. the fuel pump quit on the interstate so I needed to improvise. the trunk looked like a landfill, so I started digging. I came up with a empty antifreeze jug which I could fill with gas by pulling the hose off the pump. I plugged the end with a rubber bushing from old shocks. Stuck a piece if copper tubing into that, & had enough of hose to reach the carb from setting the jug atop the battery. I kept waiting for a raging fire, but drove that falcon home. and then there was the time......................

in a pinch, I've already used a pipe wrench on the crank spacer behind the balancer to hold the crank from turning, but it will leave a mark.

I recently bought a 390 that was rebuilt lotsa years ago & then stored ever since. I could see it had new freeze plugs so I measured the stroke to make sure it was indeed a 390 & took a chance & bought it. I was so tempted to just put it in my 64 & fire it up, but I took it apart just to check things out. I wanted to check bore & see what pistons are in it. found a little rust here & there, nothing to worry about, but better not to have it floating around. I am not pulling bottom end apart as everything is new. head & intake gaskets are cheap, & if you decide to do nothing else, by all means change valve stem seals. they break up into the tiniest, nasty little pieces that will get caught in the oil pump & jam it. plus it doesn't get any easier to work on than when it's laying on the garage floor. good luck.

it was a 10 wheeler dump truck, probably with a 500+ci. gas engine. shame it's missing the hood scoop.

Thanks guys for taking me into the forum. I'm not big on forums, but stumbled upon this by accident. A little about me. I'm almost 60yo. & started out driving with my moms 60' 352 Gal. wagon. A cool car to have now but not back then. While working part time in 73, after school my boss said he had a junker he'd sell me for $100. so I went to see it & low & behold it was a 64 gal xl. 390 4 speed.  ran good but rusty. In 75 I came across another almost rust free 64 from va. bought it for $100 bucks & stuck it away. It was a 390 auto. car that had a 352 stuffed in it just to move it around. Some how through all the years I managed to hang onto it, but that's about all. It never saw the road since 74. Marriage, kids, houses, & time take a toll on your best laid plans. As soon as I tore the 64 down for a resto I decided to become self employed. That was 21 years ago, enabling me to work 60 hour weeks. I always wanted to build it up so I always was collecting parts. A few months ago I bought a complete ready to drop in rebuilt #'s matching 390 at an estate sale so I guess the 64 will stay stock. Which brings me to the 62. I have a used car friend that bought it at auction. He had an appraisal stating it was a 390 car & all that. When I pointed out that it was an X car 352  he offered it to me for 1/2 money. So it went into the barn with 64. A couple of years ago I decided it was gonna go down the road no matter how it looked & it looked bad (still does). After  new tires, brake, fuel & exhaust systems it once again lived. Future plans call for a 390 that I have all the parts for, & change it to a big spline top loader. I almost hate to take it apart because I love driving it. My original 64 I had in high school went to ford heaven by way of the crusher 25 years ago, but I still have that 390 & T10 plus the doors. Some where in a move the seats & console got lost but I do have the 4 speed console top plate & boot. Somehow the 62 looks just about how it would have if I had it back in 1974. Strange....... shady!

Sorry, somehow I posted this in the wrong spot. maybe the moderator could place it where it belongs.  What can I say, I've even bought a few chevys, proving I'm subject to stupidity ever now & then.
