Barry, what is your #1 choice of cam bearing? I'm looking at ordering the FP-33 bearing set. I work in the Plating/Metal finishing industry so I can understand the adhesion failure off of the base material. Thanks for your input.. Fred.

With spring finally coming in Upstate NY I decided to get my Galaxie ready for the road. I pulled the plug on the oil pan and noticed a lot of fur on the end of the magnet. I cut the oil filter apart and noticed bearing material. So out with the engine and I tore it down to find all of the cam bearings trashed. The center 3 more so than 1 and 5. All on the load side. The engine never gave any signs of a issue the last time I had it out. Oil pressure was always great, No odd noises and it ran 11.14 @ 118mph. This engine has approx 2500 miles on it and 30 or so passes on it. I believe these bearings were Clevites and the cam spun with no issues when I installed it. I installed the bearings with the oil hole at the 4-5 o'clock position. There is no discoloration on the cam journals or bearing showing any starvation of oil. But the bearing material just appears to be delaminating. The rods and mains look beautiful with only a few slight scratches from debris. I will check the cam for straightness and see how it spins with new bearings. This is a flat tappet engine so I'm not running a lot of spring pressure. Not really sure where else to look or what to put the blame on. Any thoughts are appreciated.. Thanks. Fred.

I've been running Brad Penn 10w30 in my 451" flat tappet engine for 4 years now. Like Stangman  mentioned its very slippery stuff. I just tore down a 390 I had together for 10 years that has seen approx. 20,000 street miles and countless passes. That engine has been through Rotella, V-R1 and Brad Penn.. The bearings looked new and the 294s comp cams looks new. Bradd Penn gets my vote but I'm curious to hear what people have to say about mobil....

FE Technical Forum / Need help locating rings....

I have a set of JE super stock legal 390 pistons. I bought them used and I am trying to get a set of rings for them.

-The top ring is a Dykes style ring that measures. .062" (1/16").

-The second is a low tension conventional style ring that measures. .077"... So 5/64" or 2mm?

-Oil ring is a standard 3/16"

-Bore is 4.090"

I would like to stay with the Dykes style low tension ring combo.

Any help is appreciated!

I'm cleaning shop and trying to fund my race car build. I'm located in 13132 NY and will be going to the FE Reunion if someone wanted me to bring something down. Open to trades.. Looking for a Vertigate shifter and 3.5" wide slotted mag wheels. Pictures available through text 315-382-1583 or email Fvroman64@gmail.com.

-FT full sump oil pan and pick up. Nice shape, needs a good cleaning. $50

-C6AE rods with Std. bore 428 dished pistons Out of a '66 galaxie. $50

-C6TEC heads. Complete cores with springs and valves. They will need complete rebuild. $40

-6 C8AEH heads. 1 head drilled on the exhaust ports for a smog set up. All need complete machining. $20/each(sold)

-EDC 6090E heads. Not a matching set. bare cores. $150

-TRW 7024P .030" over 428 12:1 pistons. Coated skirts, comes with pins. Very nice shape. $300.

-TRW .030" 390 12:1 pistons. 1 7022P and 7 72292. Someone started machining around the pin boss to lighten the slugs. All will need to be weight matched. Comes with pins. Nice shape. $250.

-TRW STD. Bore 390 12:1 pistons. Skirts are nice. Domes look like something went through the engine. A few stuck rings. With some love you would have a nice set of pistons. Comes with pins. $60.

- C7AEB rods.  $20

The heads were decked .080" on the exhaust side to 0 on the intake side. Moves the valve angle to the piston and raises the runner angle.

I heard the same rumor yesterday from a local 4 speed racer....

That’s the only reason I mentioned Hightower. I know a lot o guys running a Hightower or a Hightower prepped 4 speed in gasser classes. I’m not looking for a clutchless set up.

The C6 was nothing fancy at all. A shift kit and pretty much a standard rebuild. I’m going to be running a top loader behind the 390 this season. When I put the 428 in the car I’m going to be putting a Hightower or G-force trans in. I have to do a little more research on what I want to buy.

Thanks guys. I will stick with the Performer rpm. I’m hoping traction isn’t going to be an issue. I’ve spent a lot of time on setting up the 4 link in the car. I’m curious to see what kind of times I will turn compared to my galaxie. Weight alone I should see .5-1 second improvement. I’m interested to see what the 4 speed will do compared to running a C6. FE Technical Forum / Perfromer RPM or single plane...Any thoughts??
« on: March 01, 2019, 06:04:56 AM »
I'm currently building a '31 Model A to go racing this season. The car with me in it will weigh 2800lbs, 4 speed, 29" tire and a gear ratio between 4.56 - 4.88, I havent decided yet. I'm not going to have my 428 built in time to go in the car so I'm freshening up a 390 I used to run in my galaxie that went 12.4 @ 104. It is a .020" over 390, 11:1 comp, with a Comp 294s cam installed on a 104 ICL, Angle cut and ported C1AE heads with CJ valves. And a port matched Performer RPM. I'm wondering if swapping the intake while I have it apart will hurt or help me. I was looking at either a Victor or a trick flow single plane. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks. Fred.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Running out of fuel on the big end..

I'm running a fuel cell with foam. It has 2 AN fittings out the rear of the sump and one vent line out of the top. I am only using the one outlet on the sump now.  Would I be safe to use the other fitting as the return side? I'm not sure if having the return that close to the pickup would cause an issue. I do know you want the return below the fuel level. And I am running 8AN line now the whole way.

That is some good info. I've never though about needing to run a return line but it makes sense. I will have to do some research on how to set it up and what fuel pump/regulator I want to run. Does anyone have any experience with the Pro Systems fuel pump and regulator?

I wonder what kind of 60’ improvement I would see with a gear change.
