FE Technical Forum / Pinion support leaks.
« on: March 15, 2015, 09:36:57 AM »
Alright guys I need some help here. PLEASE. When I put a 1350 yoke on my Moser 9" rear differential, I obviously did something wrong. It leaks now. The pinion came apart just fine and it had these tiny thin metal spacers between the pinion support and the case. There was no gasket of any kind. I just cleaned it up put the spacers back in place and bolted it down using a cross torque sequence that would seem natural. Now it leaks. Was I suppose to use any kind of gasket sealant on it during assembly? I know the seal for the Tremec input shaft uses a special thin film of gasket sealant that comes in a tube.

I want to post this picture of my new slicks. Mickey Thompson ET Streets 26 X 10.5 / 15. Mickey Thompsons website lists these as having a 10.5 section width. Jim PS. It won't take a picture so I'll just tell you. The Section Width was 10" with 30lb of air in it.

Has anyone used Mickey Thompson ET Street bias ply slicks W/0 tube. If so, what did you use to help seal the tires ( dish soap, tire sealant etc.) and would you tell me your experience with them holding air. These are going on steel rims w/bolted valve stems. It's not like I won't be carrying an air tank with me and they'll see no street use. Thanks guys, Jim

I think you need more camshaft, and at least long tube headers, 3.90 gears, and 2.5 inch exhausts with H or X pipe for you to get into the 13 second range.  The next step is mental.  Do you want a street car, or a race car?   Joe-JDC
Now that's an easy question to answer. A quick Street Car, once it leaves that category I can't use it. I take too many trips and enjoy driving it too much.
Ross, I put a 3/8" fuel line on it in 2013 and went to the Edelbrock HV fuel pump. I didn't race it last year to see if it made a difference. I've got a different tachometer this year too.

When you say Tremec 5 speed, is it a TKO, or T-5 type?  That will make a huge difference on how you launch your car.  Which transmission?  Joe-JDC
It's the TKO 600 with 3.50 Tru-Trac. With the tires I've got now I have it revved to 2000 now with a lot of wheel spin in first and second. Funny thing is my 60' time is the same by having it revved to 600 rpm at the starting line. Power shifting is all I do, knock on wood, never missed one yet with the TKO. I run 90/10 shocks in front but I don't disconnect the sway bar because I'm driving it all the time. The tires I'm running this year (smaller 26.1") will get me closer to 4750 rpm as I cross the line in forth. As far as shifting at 5400 Ross, I swear I feel it slowing down at anything over 5000. We know I've got the heads (Edelbrock) the intake (Edelbrock RPM) the carb (750) the only thing left to keep me from going there would be my shorty FPA headers and 2 1/4" exhaust system. It's got traction masters traction bars ( no wheel hop ). The cam is 282/288 216/225 dur w/ .515/.540 lift.
Someone told me to air the slicks up to 28lbs and keep reducing it a couple pounds at a time until it boggs at the rpm I choose to leave the line at. Is that a logical approach. I think I read that on one of the tire manufactures websites. Thanks guys.

Ross,
I thought everyone knew that. It's not a bad thing, after all, we get more horsepower with those cams. But the actual point of usable stroke and bore isn't at the BDC of the cylinder. Can you imagine the compression if we used all of it.
BTW: I ordered those valve cover gaskets and they finally sent me an email after a month and wanted to know if I wanted a refund because they didn't know if they'd ever get them from SCE, I took the refund.

Guys,
Some of you know that I'm keeping the 410 in my 57 and getting some DOT bias ply drag slicks this year to run a few nostalgia events. My question is about launch techniques with slicks. Between Ross's and my calculator's I figure we're just looking at @ 360hp. It's a Tremec 5 speed transmission and I'm concerned about bogging the engine on launch. I won't leave the line at an ungodly rpm because it's still an everyday driver, not a dedicated drag car. I know some of you would have had to take cars like mine to the drag strip occasionally and I'd like your opinion of where to start out on air pressures, etc. I'm curious on how some of you guys found a sweet spot to launch a car like I have. Jim

Ideally you want .040" of quench. A quench of .063" will promote detonation especially at your relatively low rpm of 2000 rpm
and your use of low grade fuel.
Not sure where how you would gain 20 ci of motor from your plan.

I look at cubic inch as when the valves are closed and you're on the compression stroke.  Different cams give you different useable cubic inch displacement. My 410 probably has about 313 useable cubic inches.

FE Technical Forum / Mechanical Advance
« on: February 02, 2015, 10:47:43 AM »
Hi Guys,
Been working on my 57 with the 410 and would like some advice on the mechanical advance of a stock distributor. The Sim5 program ( don't know how good it is) tells me I'm running too much mechanical advance too early. I'm running the 925 springs from Mr. Gasket and I'm all in by 2200 rpm. I've got my advance plate cut for 11L and I'm running 15 degrees initial advance.
I just changed my spring on the secondary weight to the original stock heavy spring that came on the distributor.
The MSD advance chart that best fits my Sim5 program uses their lightest spring on the primary weight and their heaviest spring on the secondary weight. My question is: Am I making a futile attempt at improving my performance.

427stang,
I got the yoke changed on the differential. I was flabbergasted by how much torque it took to take off the nut. And, like you said, there wasn't any way in hell I was going to get it off with a impact wrench, much less having it still in the car. I finally got it off with a extension on my breaker bar and then I thought I'd break something first. The yoke more or less fell off without any trouble. I called Portland and questioned him about the torque I was going to use to put the nut back on. He said lean on it just like you did taking it off, so I did. When it was drawn up tight the bearing spun freely. When I got through leaning on it you could feel some resistance. I remember what you said about feeling the roller bearing and it's not like that at all. Put it back in and I'm ready to take the driveshaft over to Ft. Wayne and have the 1350 end put on it. I didn't replace the rubber O-ring on the pinion support, I looked at it real good and it looked fine. Thanks for helping me. Jim

I have been running Brad Penn 10W-30 in my cars and they went way up in price. So, I bought a case of VR1 30W that has about the same pour qualities of the Brad Penn and about the same Zinc content. Does anyone else run this oil and would you share your experience good or bad. Thanks, Jim

Alright guys,
I've rounded the list down for tires that will fit underneath my car. Choices are slim when you don't have clearance. I know the MT Streets are popular but they won't fit. Remembering I'm putting a 4000 lb. + car on the track with a manual transmission with only @375HP, tell me which one you'd choose. These are tires @26 inches in Dia. that will put me @ 4700 rpm across the line.

1.  Mickey Thompson ET Drag----- 8.1 Tread Width-----L8 compound        (half way between soft and Medium)
2.  Hoosier Drag Tire----------------9.0 Tread Width-----C11 compound     (close to Medium on the + side)
3.  Hoosier Drag Tire----------------8.0 Tread Width-----D06 compound     (half way between soft and Medium)
4.  Hoosier Quick Time Pro----------8.0 Tread Width-----Quick Time Pro    (soft)
Thanks guys, Jim

BruceS,
That 406 63 Boxtop isn't a true 406. The block is the only thing I couldn't find. I ended up putting a 390+.030 block in it. Granted, everything except the forged L2291F30 pistons and the block are 406. I added the deep sump oil pan and windage tray and Mad Dog headers with 2.5" exhaust. The Cam is a Lunati 282/296 214/224 .500/.500 that allows me to run mid grade gas. It ended up with a .030 quench, 10.7 CR / 8.1 DCR engine. I had a 3.50 Trac-Loc in it and the Jay Broader wide ratio C6 would light up the tires in every gear. But, then I wanted to drive it. Soooo, in goes a 2.75 ring and pinion and a period correct AC unit. I also added power brakes. It looks like a 385HP 406 but best estimates are it's got about 370HP. It's taken first place at the Ford Nationals and got a Celebrity award last year. I have no regrets with this car. I don't trailer it and it's been all over the country in the last 3 years under it's own steam, it's never been on a trailer because it's a pleasure to drive and comfortable on a trip. Granted, it leaves a lot to be desired on takeoff but it'll set you back in the seat once it gets rolling. We'll have it at the Galaxie Nationals at Tupelo, MS, if the purist's don't like it at the Galaxie Nationals I'll park it with Allen Hutchinson's group around the corner. I'm registered for both events.
And Bruce, thank you for asking about the 63. If you're on Facebook look my name up and I'll friend you.  I'd like to see pictures of your 63. Jim

My427stang,
I finally got what you guys were telling me about taking the pinion out of the housing. And, it uses a solid spacer, it doesn't use a crush sleeve. I'll find a dial torque wrench to put it back on. 1 1/4 pounds of torque after no slop isn't very much. The new yoke came with a new nut and spacer. Thanks
