FE Technical Forum / Re: FE Power Cylinder Heads on the Dyno, Round 2

I saw a demo , from LaVision, a few years ago. Basically you seed the air with tracer particles, and use a pulsed laser, along with a sophisticated computer program. Something the oems use.
This gives you a plot, with tumble and swirl.  Not inexpensive, but if one needs that type of data, and has the resources, it's the cat's meow.

Laser doppler velocimetry (LDV) or particle image velocimetry (PIV), technologies that have been used in wind tunnels and water tunnels for many years.  They are also used for many engine applications such as fuel injector measurements and quantifying the flow inside an engine (using transparent panels to see inside).

Victor vs tf

That would be a good one, but I'm trying to keep things "vintage" looking.  Kinda either looking at Webers or a Tunnel Ram right now.

Reworked tri-power with bigger carbs if necessary or cross-ram?

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Re: GM s new logo
« on: January 09, 2021, 07:52:13 PM »
My former employer went through several logo changes over they years - I much preferred the earlier, retro-looking logos, especially the fourth one down in the left hand column.  Changing a big company name or logo is EXPENSIVE and the money could have gone to something more useful or profitable in my humble opinion.

I can tell you that it's quite hard to make smoke work at high flow velocities!

Yes, it is!  I worked for 34+ years at the Lockheed Martin Low Speed Wind Tunnel and over half of our testing was automotive (see my avatar photo).  Our smoke generator was good for about 40 mph, anything higher and the smoke plume becomes too thin.

My employee discount center indicates that x-plan can be used for vehicles in dealer stock or ordering from the factory.  However, I've found that x-plan sometimes excludes certain models, including newly-released models, specialty models (Shelbys, GT's, etc) and models that are currently selling very well.   Give it a year or so and wait for dealer inventory to build up if you are determined to use x-plan pricing!  Edit:  I just logged on and see that x-plan CAN be applied to Broncos!  The discount is very small, however.  Disappointing!

When did flowbenches come into use by the big three, or Ford, or others like Smokey Yunick?

thanks,

pl

Also, what is the visible substance in the flow?

Thanks!

pl
I 'm assuming he asking about the smoke that is in the air stream, rather than the valve.

Yes, that is a small flow viz wind tunnel equipped with a smoke rake.  Most flow viz smoke is vaporized propylene glycol.

I run a good quality steel flex fan.  No issues even in many blasts to 6kRPM.  Been on the car for nearly 40 years.  I suppose I'm doomed.  Doomed!, I tell you.

Yep, me too; mine is stainless and rated for 10,000 rpm.  Guess I'll keep a careful eye on the tach and move my shift point down a little.

Everything dropped into place, stock mounts and all.  I installed a new flex fan at the same time so i changed the spacer to put the fan 50% in/out of the shroud.  The old fan was probably not spaced properly to begin with, so I purchased a 2.25" OEM-style spacer from CJ Pony parts that put the new fan right where I wanted it.

I installed an "ACP Radiator MaxCore Plus 3-Row Aluminum Type 379 OE-Style 390/428 1967-1970/With Air Conditioning 302/351 1970" in my 70 Mach 1, 454 sideoiler and it runs much cooler.  It is nearly identical to the stock radiator so I could paint it black and no one would know it was an aluminum radiator.

What you're missing is this was 1972. They threw the records out in the 80's. The 67 up production paperwork and assembly manuals were literally rescued from a dumpster.
If I am correct...

The woman that saved the records worked at Ford and owned a 1967 Mustang. She saved these records for her year of car.

Lois Eminger, she had a 57 T-bird.  http://automotivemileposts.com/tbird/tbird1957eminger.html

Take a look at Hipo Parts for instrument panel bulbs; they offer a complete kit with many options.  Here is a link to their Ford truck kits.   https://www.hipoparts.com/1961-79-ford-truck-bronco-led-gauge-light-conversion-kits/
If you get their brightest kit, the rheostat will function properly and allow you to dim your dash lights.  As some have mentioned, you will need the electronic flasher to make your turn signals work at the correct rate.  If you have any questions, their customer service is top-notch.  Here are a couple of photos of my 70 Mach 1 instrument panels with their bulbs installed.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Crites headers

Does Crites make their headers in house? Mad Dog Headers makes headers similar to Crites but I seem to recall that maybe they are Crites' supplier.

http://maddogheaders.net/products/ford

I've heard that, too.  Regardless, Mad Dog Headers are supposed to be pretty good....  Might want to check with them on availability.

.....I wonder if anybody has ever flow comparison tested earlier stock heads to stock C4AE-G heads.

Take a look here, see if you can find the comparison you are looking for.  http://users.erols.com/srweiss/tablehdc.htm#Ford_Big_Block

Here's some info on FE factory cams, there are two that might have been used in your engine.  You'll have to look for the identifying marks to determine which one you have.  https://www.mercurystuff.com/fe-camshaft-specs.html
