We are lucky enough to have a UPS terminal right here in town, and service is great. I shipped a toploader up to Oregon a while back in a wooden crate, no problem. I also use Priority Mail boxes and strapping tape, given to my neighbor by a salesman trying to convert him, but his shop is a block from UPS. UPS guys crack up when I bring one in  ::)

Saw one for myself a few years ago- a longblock bought by the owner of a large collection, for an original HM 63-1/2 NASCAR Galaxie. Supposedly dyno tested, all "correct" blah blah. My friend who has a race resto shop went to install it, and when they tilted the back down to drop it in, the oil started running out of the back in a pretty good stream. Off to my neighbor's shop, tore down, and what a mess- and messed up parts. It had a press- plug steel crank (way undersize of course), but I have never seen anyone put a crank in an engine in anything close to that condition. First was very obvious- a couple of the plugs had been replaced with screw-in versions, but crooked and not seated deep enough, and the remaining press-ins had no snap rings. Pull the caps, journals pretty rough, but the real seal was the worst, rust-pitted so badly that there was no way a seal could be expected to hold- really bad. Considering that the rest of the journals were way undersize, and the rest of the crank was also pitted, not hard to figure out- scrap pile rusty crank, ground to "fix". Rods were in similar shape, heads were half-assed "rebuilt", non- matching valves etc. They called me, look at this crap, so I brought down a cherry std steel crank, the rods also got tossed, and heads completely re-done. Of course the owner paid pretty good money for that engine "built on Biblical principles"  :o

OK- my best ChebbieCraft story. Around '79, I helped a buddy a bit on a fake '69 Z/28 project- started as his neighbor's wife's 307/ Powerglide stripper, stretched the fenders a bit, added a (lame) big-block with a potato cam, fancy paint job and Z emblems- perfect "awesome" car by ChebbieCraft standards. So they're going to do a "Cars of Napa Valley" story, so we assemble a few hotrods at Cantrell's house down the street. "Rick" had what was known simply as "the red car", an original 427 Cobra that "Mark" took car of in his Cobra shop, and was a pretty rapid piece, had a strong 447 stroker in it, and after Mark tore up one of the rear fenders in a minor contact situation one night in Vallejo (!), an old aluminum smith had widened the rear fenders 6", and it had 15" wide wheels on the back with roadrace gumballs- gawd, it was badass looking- and could back it up. So we think the red car is coming. Saturday morning, here comes fake-Z guy with Niel Britt from ChebbieCraft in tow. Rick and Mark aren't there yet, so we work up the line, start with Cantrell's mom's 69 Boss 429- Britt yawns, yeah, nice white Mustang, yeah, 429... Then, we think, on to the big artillery- he didn't even look at my original black 406-6V XL LOL- after a little popping and spitting from the Tecalemit Jackson injectors, Cantrell backs out original race GT40 #P1009, beautiful Guardsman Blue with white stripes, race 289 with open exhaust, extensive race history, early race car etc. Yeah, that's cool, looks like a kit car.. By now we can see where this is going, gonna be a waste of time- no Chebbies in stock. To kill time, we show him dad's 54 tudor with the side-oiler medium riser, Shelby Dominator intake, 65 Shelby rearend, 3.91 Detroit Locker, LTD disc brakes, original olive drab- ultimate likker car right there- another yawn. About then wee hear Whoop- BAAAaaahhh... Whoop- Baaa.. in pulls Rick and Mark, but in a blue 289 Cobra. Seems Rick had just swapped the red car with the gent who had bought his 289, which was a late USRRC/ FIA spec race car, one of the ones with the big fenders, upgrade suspension, pin-drive wheels, Webers, and in a real road race, more than a match for most 427 cars. So Britt smiles, yeah, another Ford, nice looking car, sounds good blah blah.. So hey, Mark, why don't you take him for a ride? Now Mark can shoe a Cobra pretty well, and has an extremely low instinct for self (and sheet metal) preservation, a 427 car of his own that was, at the time, receiving a Cammer setup, and a wicked mischievious sense of humor. That little grin came out, sure, c'mon... Off they go, Mark smiles and winks, Britt smiling, yeah, never been in one of these things, kinda neat for a Ford. Around the corner they go, where there's a straight stretch with no houses, and we hear Buhwaah.. BuwaaAAH-AHH-AHH.. BWAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH.. Couple minutes later they pull back in, Mark's still smiling that little smile, and Britt is white as a sheet, one hand on the cowl, other on the door in a death grip- gets out of the car trembling  :'(  We all start laughing knowing Mark took him sideways a few times, and he finally breaks into a grin, trying to regain his cool, yeah, that was pretty cool, that focking thing is pretty fast. So he half-heartedly take a couple pictures, says thanks, but sorry, I'm looking for Camaros and Corvettes, they sell magazines- bye. Sure enough, the 307/ Powerglide fake-Z/28 was on the cover of ChebbieCraft, and no mention of any of the other cars, except one blurb about a GT40 in a henhouse

FE Technical Forum / Spark Arrestors
« on: March 10, 2014, 04:38:33 PM »
I have a set of those spark arrestors on a Bird 3-deuce that cameoff a V-drive boat- on a v-drive, the engine sits backwards, and scoops face the rear so splash water won't get in the engine- so they face the "right" way on car, too. Was thinking about running a set on the '57 Sedan Delivery- any chance you'd like to sell or trade those?

Mine is similar to the B2 Hilborn setup, but is a magnesium Kinsler sprint car setup for 351C- came as two injector sections and separate center valley- 2-5/8 bores

No hurry on that, because I won't be able to do much with them until I get some of the basic machining operations programmed.  But at some point down the road it would be good to them, to see how they match up with a raised medium riser port.

They might match up pretty good, as these Dove HR's have been cut for race T&D's, which didn't leave much of the roof, and then the roof was filled slightly with Devcon

I was at the foundry today, taking a gander at the first prototype high-riser casting.  Now that the standard intake adapters are running fairly smoothly in production, I can start thinking about doing the programs for this bad boy:

This casting has not yet been heat treated and is still covered with some casting sand; it will be a couple of weeks before I get my hands on it.  It is also a full 20 pounds heavier than the raw medium riser casting!

This one is going to be trickier to machine than the medium riser casting, just because of it's size.  Right now, when the 4th axis on my CNC machine spins the castings around and moves them into position for the various machining operations, the casting itself comes very close to hitting some of the tools in the toolholder.  The high riser casting would definitely hit some of them if run through the same operations, so I may have to split the machining into a few different operations, with limited tools in the toolholders.  I have to admit I'm kind of looking forward to that challenge.  Meantime, I have a couple of weeks to just continue running the medium riser adapters, and try to get some work done on my SOHC project...

That's my baby LOL... Thinking about doing rubbings of the flanges on my ported Dove HR heads and the injectors to send to you, to see how they match up

The new owners may have bitten off more than they can chew.
They have a rep for buying and wrecking automotive forums with embedded ads and popups.
The "bullet" is perhaps the most vitriolic, wild, contentious, and entertaining forum in the automotive world.
The membership there is known for taking down those that deserve taking down - could be interesting to watch this one play out.

Would that be the owners of the FTE site? That place is ALL about how much ad space they can sell- really gives my Ad-Block a workout LOL

Makes you wonder what it would have done at about 13.5:1, with a ported Victor and an 1150, and a nice solid roller- I'd bet a coupla clams we might find out in the near future lol...

NASCAR never banned the SOHC engine, they just hit it with a weight penalty that would have made it uncompetitive, so Ford told tham to pack it and pulled the program. Kinda like NHRA with the Clevelands- there's even an area on NHRA's own site where they admitted they gave the Chebbies (Jenkin's Vega in particular) a large weight advantage to please the large number of ticket-buying Chebbie lovers. The four-door Maverick fit into a loophole
Scroll down in the below page, beside the pic of Jenkin's Vega, where you'll find "Recognizing that the vast number of fans drove Chevrolets, NHRA reconfigured the rules to allow cars with small-block wedge engines to run at a lighter weight break."
