FE Technical Forum / Re: Update on the FE Power Cylinder Head Testing

Awesome Jay!!   The bright side of this is now you can , with the head off, see what the burn pattern is in the chamber and top of pistons.   Also any clean, washed areas.  Maybe some rocker problems could be an unfriendly lobe shape that is putting some harmonics into the valve train?  Not necessarily valve float but something happening below valve float rpm?

I’ve had bad coils, bad condensers, broken wire inside of insulation that goes inside of distributor, bad fuel pumps, but the most aggravating one was a gas powered dump truck that ,when the fuel tank was cleaned, silicone was used on the sender gasket.   It broke off and was inside the fuel lines and would run for 30sec or 30 min.  Unhooked fuel lines and blew the silicone out with compressed air.   Was amazing how much was in it.   At one point, the fuel pump had ingested some of it and made the check valves erratic.  Loose check valve in fuel pump was fun to find also

Still be careful of closed loop cooling     The one I have was closed loop and apparently at one time it leaked or somehow still got salt water into it.    Looked ok from the outside but I think it may be junk.  Lots of corrosion at the deck surface around the end water slots   I’m not sure it would hold a head gasket and then there is the problem of how thick are the cyls.

Just wait till Jays heads get to to making decent power (they likely will) and push the crank out of everybody’s blocks.  Is it a bad thing to have heads than can out run the block or not?

I’ve got a 458 tunnelport in my 70 Mach - here , in fl, we used to joke that our shoes were melting to the floor.    Always was torture to drive it in the summer    I could make the motor run cool, but the interior was another story.   I want to try to install ac in it bit I’m not sure it can overcome the interior heat

FE Technical Forum / Re: Need help with Holley carburetor tune.
« on: July 06, 2020, 06:08:59 PM »
I once fought a 3310 Holley with a lean spot in it like that and I eventually found that I had a gasket that blocked one of the fuel passages.  Acted just like what you are seeing.    Another one had something inside the metering block that had some crud or something in it.  Used some aluminum cleaning acid in that circuit to “boil it out”

I roll it between two boards.   The wider the board the better.    I haven’t used it for fuel line yet, but it’s on the “next” project to do list.

Now we need a carb intake and a distributor kit

Is it a thermal clutch?   Does it have the spiral spring in the middle front of it?  I had to get three on the Chevy work truck before one would work correctly.  One wouldn’t engage , one stayed engaged the whole time, one would work correctly.  If it doesn’t have the spring, then it’s not a thermal one and may be just the way it behaves.  Sometimes you can “adjust” the spring to make it engage earlier or later.
