FE Technical Forum / Dove mutations
« on: March 26, 2016, 12:02:21 PM »
I'm thinking if one had a set of heads that were cut for T&D's, and had a set of Dove HD's with the end supports, and also had a Bridgeport, one could whittle out a steel plate that was the thickness of the cut for the T&D's, make whatever clearance cuts necessary for head studs etc., connect the Doves to the steel plate, maybe even add some stock underneath if possible before tapping the holes so one could use longer studs, and as the HD rockers seem to be a stout piece, have a pretty strong setup with the loads spread across the steel plate, and added thread engagement on the studs. If one didn't have the Dove's already, then new T&D's would be the obvious choice- but if one (like me) had this combination of parts in hand (X2 by the way), and the Bridgeport, with a little out of the box thinking, could build it. And not have to convert to pushrod oiling. Pretty sure no one has tried this, but there are some out there with enough cross- experience with the parts to comment- please LOL....

IIRC means you might have a touch of CRS- and hopefully not full-fledged CRAFT...
Pretty sure the heads are C8AE-H's, eight bolt set that was built fresh for a jet boat and only run a little. Should be able to swap to your springs and put 'em on

They might not be trimmed down, they made lightweights in CJ size too. Pip, I have a set, IIRC, of C8's that are pretty fresh that I don't need that could go pretty cheap. I do have an extra set of Ebocks but not sure if I want to give them up yet- if I sell a couple other things I'll probably hang on to them

As I have Barry's, Jay's, Smokey's, and the R-M book, and also the Sunnen machining guide stuff, I can say I've learned a little or a lot from each. I even have the old Chevrolet Power book, because as the wise man said, they all have pistons that go up and down. Smokey was an innovator by nature and a shit-disturber at heart, similar to another push the envelope guy, Junior Johnson. Having grown up around the road racing stuff in the Sixties at the Glen, I would add a few others, Jim Hall, Roger Penske and Bruce McLaren- all of whom I had the pleasure of watching drive and also engineer some pretty wild stuff. Hall even had his own road race course, Rattlesnake raceway, with photo sensors mounted in holes in the track, in the mid-sixties- and worked up through the wings to the 2J or "sucker" Chaparral, with a 440 JLO snowmobile engine under a box with ground following skirts, driving a pair of suction fans to hold the car to the ground. Penske was a master of the parts book in Trans-Am, using stuff like four lug wheels off six-cylinder cars for faster pits tops. Smokey was of course a little bit of a nutbag, but the biggest genius while being a pretty twisted individual was Henry Ford- find a copy of the book "The Fords"

My thoughts when I grabbed my magnesium Kinsler 351C sprint car injectors was that the airflow of a 410 Cleveland at 9K+ might be close to the airflow of an FE at around 7K- IIRC the Kinslers are 2-5/8 bore. If you never heard a good dirt Cleveland, you missed out- really stood out in the sea of Chebbies. A friend of mine bought a couple Jack Roush engines for his dirt car in the late 80's, couple serious screechers- and the Chebbie guys cried like whipped puppies. When a guy runs a full second faster on a 3/8 mile dirt track, you could call that a significant margin lol...

I expect nothing less from Chebbie Craft- make the Ford look lame, makes the Chebbie look better  ::)
After they came to Napa and ignored a cherry genuine Webered USRRC/ FIA big fender 289 Cobra, and an original race GT40 (#P1009, very early car) in favor of a fake 69 Z28 that belonged to a friend of mine, started out as his neighbor's wife's 307/Powerglide stripper- and they put it on the cover of the mag LOL...

Pussies??  Some of us just got back from beating our junk at Drag Week and you think we're pussies??  Tell you what, Felony, you get Ford to send me a 700HP Shelby Mustang engine and trans at no charge, and I'll drop it in my friend BradFORD's Pinto and we'll film some tire shredding action.  We'll make that Charger look like a Prius. ;D ;D

Meanwhile, FElony, don't YOU be a pussy - Get a car ready for Drag Weekend!  After all, its right in your back yard, and I want to read your day by day account...

Everybody knows that rat bastard FElony is actually HMSV in drag- so a quasi-pussy at best :o  As I rank up there pretty good on the neat schidt sitting around not running scale myself, I have to stand up for my fellow rat bastard a bit- but not that much LOL...

Let's start a contest, non-running schidt growing cobwebs- maybe a motivator...
1969 Mach1- first car, bought it from my dad- 10 yrs since started
1969 Fairlane Cobra- haven't had an engine in it yet
1969 Ranchero GT, 390 A/C- probably going up for sale soon (see "1957 Ranchero" below- which one would you rather keep?)
1962 406 Galaxie 500XL w/427- drove it into storage at Mare Island 2 weeks ago, uncorked and slicks- drew a bit of a crowd hehehe...
1962 Galaxie 500XL Sunliner- runs but 2nd gear band shot- going on the rack next week (yeah, sure...)
1956 Mercury Medalist, 312-4V- a flipper, probably going to Sacramento swap this weekend
1957 Courier Sedan Delivery, runs good, needs brake job to drive, in Mare Island storage. Got it from the original owners about a year ago
1957 Ranchero, 390 by PO on stand, discs and tilt column done, very solid- a tarp-on (just thought that up lol..)
1966 Q-code 428 Thunderbird Town Landau, runs great, sitting in Mare Island as it needs a new vinyl top
1932 1-1/2 ton dump truck- ran when parked, 3 yrs since started- keep thinking about making a duallie out of it
1979 Porsche 928, cherry, needs fuel pump relay to run
1972 Pontiac Grand Prix, 400, runs great and new paint/interior, for sale soon
Let's not start on piles of FE parts, Farmalls etc...

FE Technical Forum / Re: Old School Skirt Clearance
« on: September 27, 2015, 07:23:50 PM »
The old heavy TRW's did grow a bunch when hot, I've run both the flattops and the MR small domes at .010 (at least), oil control a little iffy and sounded like a grenade war going off inside until  it got warm (as noted, just uncork it). Ran pretty good and very low turning effort (7 lbs for the shortblock), but the skirts would start cracking on the MR's after a while. They were pretty happy at .007

I never use it, and won't- just smooth up with the cartridge roll and several cleanings with carb cleaner then soapy water blast. Saw a 351W once with smoked bearings and the pump screen full of Glyptal- back when it was all the rage. Never thought much of the fad of Scotchbrite treatment on bearings either- better to leave the coating on the bearings

Motorcycle folks just love to use red on the brake disc and pulley/sprocket bolts, going into aluminum hubs- if you don't use a little heat, it's pretty common for the threads to come out of the hub instead of the loctite breaking loose...

We we the hot rod capital in the area. More drag racing than you could shake a stick at. We coulda had own own tv show and put that show that on to shame. Hey Lenz remember?

Ah yes- the old drinking at 18 thing in NY back then- I was in a bar in the next town shooting pool at 15, when all three of our high school coaches walked in the front door- out the back I went, didn't get caught hehehe...

I can one up ya. my first new bike was a huffy rail. purple with a sissy bar & that bad ass red line slick. circa 1966 or 7. I was sofa king cool.  that was until it went into a death wobble at the top end & crashed. got a capped front tooth from that one. also born in 56. still have the bike though, & the tooth.

I also had a Huffy Rail- musta broke a dozen handlebar clamps from yanking back on the bars doing wheelies. Figured out how to loosen the friction clutch on the stick shifter so it would slowly shift up by itself as I rode, and told everybody it had an "automatic transmission" LOL
Got a black & white Polaroid Christmas Morning pic of it and my ugly ass somewhere

Last time I checked with a heavy tow, I went from Napa to Stockton, picked up a Farmall Super M Diesel, and back home with a 26K rated Trail King (a backhoe trailer) with my 2001 F350 4x4 duallie, 7.3 Powerstroke with an extra 100HP programmed in, 4" exhaust and exhaust brake, and got 19.6 MPG for the loop- and that trailer is a heavy sucker. It'll get about 23 on the freeway with a sweet spot at 72 mph.
7.3 just runs and runs and runs and......
