FE Technical Forum / Re: FE oiling
« on: September 12, 2021, 02:01:14 PM »
Was the NASCAR inspired special rod & bearing (I believe wider) issued first for the center oiler? Wouldn't seem necessary if in fact the side oiler solved all oiling problems.

Question; Is it true that the center oiler plumbing scheme is not sufficient (or marginally adequate) to provide full oil supply at higher RPM? Or is the relatively large diameter and narrow dimensions of the FE rod bearing (surface speed) more responsible for the perceived oiling inadequacy of the system?

Jay, I have read and re read your very helpful book many times, (I keep it by the throne) and as soon as it begins to disassemble from use I'll be in line for a new copy, thanks.

You might check your neutral start switch (if auto.) and your ignition switch and any other wiring in the ign. circuit between the switch and coil.

X2 on the silicone grease, works on radiator hoses also. Aftermarket FE alum. water pump, inlet oversize impossible to fit, just a bit of said grease and like magic wiggled it right on!

A friend of mine had a smoking condition on a brand X and tried two or three sets of intake gaskets, no change. The culprit turned out to be a crack in one of the intake ports in the head. Something to check for.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Shrinking push rods
« on: June 25, 2021, 03:34:42 PM »
I did a version of that in the lathe. Had to shorten about .250 and had to bore the ID of the tube deeper so had to pull the tip out, came out EZ. I think they use a reamer originally so bore does not run true with OD of tube. Had to zero ID each one before boring. A lot of fooling around but they were new with just brake in time. Switching from Speed Master rockers to Harland sharp made this necessary. Thanks for the tip.

Has anyone out there been tempted to shorten Smith Bros push rods. I believe the ends are pressed in. Thought I might hold them in a lathe collet and somehow pull the cups off, or is this just nuts?

Slight hijack here, remember when Japan automakers were "dumping' cars in the USA, meaning selling below cost to eliminate competition? I believe this is the AMAZON business model.

I would just go ahead and weld it as far as that goes, what you might be concerned about is warping of the axle tube.
