FE Technical Forum / Starter recommendations?
« on: December 20, 2018, 11:36:32 PM »
Hi everyone,

I'm in need of a starter- I'd like to avoid the cheapo remanfucatured starters from O'reilys, I've have too many of those self destruct on Windsor motors.

Engine is a 428 FE (10.5:1 compression) with a toploader/184 tooth flywheel in a '68 mustang. I'll be using Hooker 6114 HKR Super Comp long tube headers. I've heard there have been fitment issues with these headers and those "clockable" mini starters?

I looked into the stock style Powermaster starters but the summit reviews state that people have issues with the nose of the starter hitting the flywheel.

FE Technical Forum / Correct clutch fork 428
« on: December 20, 2018, 02:51:54 AM »
Hi everyone,

I have a C6OA-6394-D bellhousing to go behind a 428 in a '68 mustang, I purchased a clutch fork for it but noticed it uses the clip in style fulcrum as opposed to the wire style fulcrum that my C6OA-6394-D bellhousing uses. The fork I bought is an ACP unit that's supposedly correct for my application, however it doesn't have holes drilled for a wire retainer- it just has a riveted clip in style retainer. Does anyone have a recommendation on where to find either the correct clip in style fulcrum or wire style clutch fork? (which one is easier to source?)

Thank you!

FE Technical Forum / Re: 428 Flywheel and Clutch
« on: December 18, 2018, 09:43:40 PM »
Flywheel will work, but I think you'll run out of clutch.  That clutch is just a little heavier than stock, rated for 400 hp.

I'd use a RAM 88769HDX, which is an 11" Long, rated for 450 hp.  That would be a good street clutch.  If you think you will be beating the snot out of at all, then I'd upgrade the clutch.

Brent,

Am I stuck using the 3 finger style clutch? I was hoping to stick with a diaphragm clutch, twin disc is out of the budget (and frankly way overkill).

Hi everyone,

I'm looking at choosing a flywheel and clutch- engine is a standard 428 (Non CJ or SCJ), however I'm using a CJ bell housing behind a close ratio top loader from a 1968 390 mustang (1 1/16" input shaft). I'm using an aftermarket stock style 428 harmonic balancer. It's a relatively mild build with Edelbrock heads/intake and Lunati hydraulic roller cam- I'm not expecting to beat the snot out of it  ;).

I was looking at this flywheel:

https://www.summitracing.com/parts/hay-12-242/overview/make/ford

And this clutch:

Am I good to go with these parts? Thank you!

FE Technical Forum / 428 pushrods
« on: December 16, 2018, 12:34:36 PM »
Hi everyone,

I'm coming to the stage where I'm measuring for pushrod length-

Where would one order pushrods from? I'm using Harlan Sharp roller rocker arms, so I believe I'd need a 3/8" cup one one end and 3/8" ball on the other, but what diameter for the rest of the pushrods? 3/8" or 5/16"? I'm assuming I'd go with a solid pushrod? (Stock Edelbrock heads, roller cam)

I doubt there's an off the shelf size that would fit so I'd have to go custom.

Thanks!

FE Technical Forum / Re: 428 crank key
« on: October 18, 2018, 02:04:53 PM »
All you need is some 1/4" square key stock.  Cut off about 7/8" and save the rest for the next motor.  A good hardware store should have it, or you can get it from McMaster Carr:

https://www.mcmaster.com/key-stock

Hi Jay,

Thank you for the link! Do you have any suggestions on what metal to go with? I see they offer a steel, alloy, and stainless steel key stock in both undersize and oversize.

Does anyone have a link or recommendation for a crank key? I'm missing the one for the harmonic balancer. I have the one for the crank spacer and it fits well.

I ordered this kit for the balancer key:

https://www.summitracing.com/parts/dur-fkf-2/overview/make/ford

However, the key provided seems to be too tall, fits loosely, and is not long enough. It's also a weird round shape?

Looks like I'll be giving FPA a call on Monday, they don't seem to have prices posted anywhere?

FE Technical Forum / Header suggestions?
« on: October 06, 2018, 12:45:18 AM »
I'm looking into a set of Doug's brand headers for my '68 mustang fastback with a 428, 4 speed, and z-bar. Anyone have experience with these headers? Fitment? Ground clearance(!)?

I don't want to break the bank (anymore than I already have) :)

FE Technical Forum / Rocker arm suggestions (revisited)
« on: September 26, 2018, 12:06:58 AM »
I tried taking apart my stock factory adjustable rocker arms, the rocker arms seem to be scored where they lay on the shaft and the stands were all seized on. I managed to get one stand off and noticed heavy scoring on that as well.

With that being said, I'm more or less at square one. I noticed Jegs sells a factory replacement non adjustable set with new shafts and rocker arms, would this be suitable with some end supports? I'd be running a hydraulic roller cam.

https://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS/555/20198/10002/-1?CAWELAID=230006180039292809&CAGPSPN=pla&CAAGID=39714413703&CATCI=aud-295441112107:pla-457013475483&CATARGETID=230006180040357472&cadevice=c&jegspromo=nonbrand&gclid=Cj0KCQjwuafdBRDmARIsAPpBmVVzBjjnq2bpx95EVQwwVG7iZpvME8bYz260P__WeufKpNEAIOVBAbcaAmDJEALw_wcB

Or should I just spend the money on the Harland Sharp rocker arm set and call it done? I rather not do this twice :)

FE Technical Forum / Re: How do my piston ring end gap #'s look?
« on: September 24, 2018, 12:50:53 PM »
No comment on the clearances, but that '67/'68 Shelby Boss 302 has to be the rarest Mustang I've ever seen  :o ;)

What can I say, the 70's were apparently a dark time :) . S code '68 fastback, '70 boss 302 stripes, '68 shelby fiber glass, '69/70 mirrors, '70 grabber yellow paint, and a hole cut for a shaker hood (complete with trim ring)! The car was last on the road in 1977, the original 390 was supposedly blown up at an LA drag strip. There's still VHT tire glue splattered all over the wheel wells.

Needless to say I've been slowly returning it back into a normal non-yellow '68 fastback.

I completely understand that plastigage isn't the most ideal when it comes to measuring clearances. The engine is going to be somewhat mild, the goal of this car was to have a tame cruiser for the street (with some balls). The short block is already assembled, does this warrant taking it all apart again? The crank was mic'd when it was polished and I was told to use 20 undersized bearings.

Using Edelbrock RPM heads/intake, Lunati hydraulic roller cam

Cam specs:

Advertised Duration (Int/Exh): 262/270
Duration @ .050 (Int/Exh): 211/219
Gross Valve Lift (Int/Exh): .559/.559
LSA/ICL: 112/106
Valve Lash (Int/Exh): Hyd/Hyd
RPM Range: 1600-5600

FE Technical Forum / How do my piston ring end gap #'s look?
« on: September 24, 2018, 12:59:27 AM »
I just finished assembling the short block for my .030 over 428 FE, these the numbers I got for my ring end gaps:

Piston:     First ring:    Second ring:

#1          .019             .021
#2          .020             .022
#3          .020             .025 (Oops)
#4          .021             .021
#5          .023             .021
#6          .021             .021
#7          .019             .021
#8          .019             .026 (Oops)

They're forged TRW pistons with *I think* plain old nothing special Sealed Power rings. The person who originally assembled the short block had everything gapped at .011-.014 which seems WAY to tight, thank god he/she never finished building the motor/try running it.

New Clevite bearings were installed then plastigage'd, everything came in right around .0015ish. Took it all apart again then reassembled everything with Royal Purple assembly lube. I reused the original main cap bolts and torqued everything down in 3 steps to 105 ft/lbs (I still need to plastigage the rod caps).

I just happened to have a dial indicator laying around (No idea where it came from) and checked the thrust as well, I got around .008 which seems in the ballpark.

This is my first time building a short block from scratch so please bear with me :)

FE Technical Forum / Pushrod length checker
« on: September 14, 2018, 11:20:54 AM »
Hi everyone,

Any recommendations on a pushrod length checker? I'm browsing through Summit and I'm trying to figure out the minimum length along with what end styles I need.

I'll be using factory adjustable rocker arms and Lunati hydraulic roller lifters.
