I know of a 302 based SBF that's 396 CI and uses Titanium Honda rods. Drives on the street and has run mid 9's. Same engine builder with his C/A 442 CI and near 1000 HP uses a steel rod at 12,500 RPM. There's a reason for that and I'm not smart enough to explain. Most Pro Stock 500 CI engines were also using a steel rod. Really big power cars go with aluminum which has a finite (as in short) lifespan. Listen to Brent and you won't go wrong.

Drag Strip Results for FE Powered Vehicles / Re: Shaved some tenths off
« on: November 06, 2021, 03:15:20 AM »
Since my name is Dale I might as well comment. Many many years ago I ran an 11.81 @ 116 MPH. Once some online calculators like Wallace came along both those numbers seem legit. I have no idea how a Moroso slide rule works but is also very accurate at predicting numbers. That said.......

Picking up some tenths is a huge improvement and you can't MPH without HP. Better 60' time will likely bring your ET in line with the MPH. Ignore what "other" cars are running. I also didn't review your Combo but if an auto then I'd be looking at a better Convertor for starters. More rear gear will also help lining up the numbers.

Something else that many will call BS but I know to be factual is if you are spinning hard at the start line then your MPH will tend to go up a little. Why you ask?? Because the car is basically taking a run at the 60' clocks and once it hooks the power will make MPH but your 60' time will look dismal. Been there many a time. My 390 will generally 60' around 1.42 and run a 10.20 over 132 MPH. Rory's Fairmont 60's way better which means a better ET but similar MPH.

Thanks Doug..   My friends name is Howie Stevens and he's looking for some oddball ARP head studs I believe. He'll be calling from Vancouver Canada and the last 4 digits of his phone is 6990 in case that pops up on your call display. Sorry, can't help with Facebook and actually trying to avoid that place as well.

So we've established that he's still on Earth which is a good thing but how does one contact him? His phone number is disconnected, website and Facebook out of date and he's likely busy. I understand the supply chain problems and a Friend is looking for some items the Doug may or may not be able to find.

Tried calling Doug and it says the number is no longer in service so wondering if anyone has been in contact with him recently. Thanks

All I have to add is that I put a bronze gear on my (not for racing) Unilite about 16 years ago and have used the same setup on 3 engines with 3 different Cams. 2 were/are Solid Rollers and one was a cast Solid. Still running to this day with no obvious issues. Granted, not a high mile car but hundreds of Drag Race passes. Never had a steel gear nor saw the need however your results may vary.

FE Technical Forum / Re: alternator bracket
« on: September 26, 2021, 10:20:51 PM »
You need the factory triangle bracket. Many many years ago I thought it wasn't really needed so left it off. Single groove pulley but it started tossing the belt at high RPM. New belt and bigger Bar to tension the alternator and same thing happened. At some point while removing everything for another problem I found that the lower bolt was bent. Put the bracket back on and never a problem since even using an Edelbrock pump. Same belt has been on for 17 years of racing and 7500 RPM.

Probably find lots of info on YouTube but a good Diesel mechanic would be your best bet.

I have two Romac's so one for each engine. Really like them but where does one buy those nowadays? I'll have to check but know I had one with an Aluminum Hub (SA Series) As for timing sets, I also like my Rollmaster however have a Summit brand on my 390 that looked nice with a fully indexed crank gear.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Warning against using ARP L19 rod bolts...

I've managed to mangle the bottom end of my 390 pretty badly with a broken rod and the Std. ARP rod bolt looked fine afterward. I'm never going to be in the world that needs a L19 or better bolt however this is very valuable info so thanks to Brent for starting the discussion.

Plenty safe IMO at 6500 as long as the valve train is up to the task. 7500 with junk like mine isn't advised however it is what it is.. Stuff will break whenever it feels like it in my experience.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Trickflow Tunnel wedge intake

I think I'd like to try the TF t-Wedge but my 390 currently runs fairly well with mildly ported E-brocks and a stock BT MR 2x4 so curious if there was any gain to be had. Hardly worth the investment for a few HP although the -Wedge cool factor is worth something. Has anyone compared the BT vs TF as far as flow and performance ?

I thought that comment about a secret Cam grind was funny. You're doing very well with the combo at hand however don't think you'll see any gain with a gear swap. Just not enough difference to make a difference. I ran a 4.86 and and went down to a 4.57 because my MPH picked up with engine improvements and I'm out of RPM. Could easily go down some more but then I do have a secret Cam in my 390 and yes it could use something better. Sometimes best to stick with what you know works.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Re: Sealing trunk area for NHRA requirements...
« on: December 30, 2020, 02:22:09 AM »
I'll take some pictures in the next couple days. My car is legal so no need to do more. Battery in the trunk is another fuzzy area but if you use a gel cell like an Optima then things get simple. Steel braided fuel lines with an anti siphon vent tube will be your friend at tech. The better it looks the less they check and neither of us are running NHRA National events.

On my car I have a 8 Gal (US) cell in the trunk that I had intended to be mounted low but then it was too low, looked like crap from behind and the sump fittings and lines were seriously exposed. Ended up mounted flush with where the factory tank top would be and aluminum fill panes to fill the spaces.

The bulkhead behind the back seat is the factory steel piece and I used windlace and black Right Stuff to seal any gaps. Only had 1 Tech guy ask be about the space along the quarters above the wheel wells and I said..  What do YOU suggest. He walked away and I've never been questioned since. Not sure how your trunk is but you can easily make a plate and seal it behind the seat area  without any major butchery. I can get a photo of mine if you like.
