FE Technical Forum / Re: scary thought,fe die?

As a percentage of people involved in all hot rodding there is likely a decrease.  The "Boomer" is the "Hot Rod" generation.  That said, I think there will always be people active and interested in cars with internal combustion engines.  I do a little rifle shooting and notice that at most sportman's clubs and shooting ranges black powder rifle shoots and groups are some the most active.  Humans are an inquisitive species and are interested in history as well as the future.  I think hot rodding, and as we all  know Ford FE engines power the best hot rods, there will be an active hobby for a long, long time.

I actually registered for this forum in 2012 but have only posted 11 times.  I am a creature of habit and long time member of the Network 54 forum (since 2001) so I have usually just monitored and posted there.  I know a lot of people are active on on both forums and recognize your names. The technical issues on this forum seem a little more  sophisticated than the Network 54 forum so I apologize in advance for any "dumb" questions I might post here.  The Network 54 Forum internet connectivity issues have become too much of a  hassle for me.  Also, bluntly, some of the "food fights" on the Network 54 over  the years have  become tiresome.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Radiators that for Desert heat

I live in Illinois and certainly don't have the summer temperatures like you do in Phoenix but I have run the same Ron Davis radiator in my '64 Galaxie NSS car for almost 15 years without problems.

Private Classifieds / Need part to get my Galaxie back on track

I stripped the rear loaer control arm bolt on my '64 Galaxie. This is the bolt with oversize shank to go through frame and a necked down thread.   I'm rushing to get the car ready to race and ws a little too enthusiastic with a wrench.
Any chance one of you have one laying around or do you know of a place to get one?  Thanks in advance

FE Technical Forum / Re: Need some help on '64 Galaxie front suspension '
« on: January 11, 2016, 10:51:36 PM »
[Thanks for your reply.  On my stock '64 Galaxie there is a stamped steel ( about 1/8" thick) riveted to the frame.  Attached is a picture of the stock flange.  1/2" shoulder bolts are pressed into the flange from the motor side and the stock, cast cross shaft is slip fit to the bolts.  Shims are inserted between the flange and the shaft to adjust alignment.  A picture of the stock and the new tubular cross shafts is attached.

Since my first post, I have discovered that, not only is the center to center distance a problem, but the bottom of the tubular cross shaft hits the bulge in the flange because the stock cross shaft is "bowed" to clear it.

Thanks again and I hope this makes my problem a little clearer.

I got a good deal on a set of tubular control arms for my '64 Galaxie but the holes in the stock upper arm cross shaft are 5.5" C to C and so the holes in the frame are 5.5" C to C. and the tubular shaft is 6" C to C.   The 6" dimension on tubular shafts seems to be the most common .  The person I bought them from told me this and said he planned to just grind the frame holes out to fit but I am a little leery of doing this.  On the stock system the bolts are a press fit into the frame and I think they have to be pretty accurate to maintain from alignment. Does anyone know if anybody makes shaft with the correct stock 5.5" spacing?   Another option is to weld over the holes in the frame and re-drill them but that is a lot of work and tricky to keep exact.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Mine started as a stock 352 also.  The first motor was also a 427 marine center oiler with a stock 428 crank.  Blew that motor in 2009 with a cracked cylinder wall.  It was not block filled.  The motor now has the blocked filled to the bottom water pump holes.  I have not water temperature issues with it.  If you are going racing with your car I would recommend block fill.

I have followed this forum for quite a while but did not register as a member until a few weeks ago.  I am familiar with a lot of the members from posts on the FE Forum where I have been following since 2001.  I bought a stock '64 Galaxie in 1999 and have completely re built and modified the car to a NSS race only car.  Best e.t. is 11.33 with the current motor; 427 stock marine block with a Scat 4.25 crank for 486 cu. in., pocket ported Edelbrock heads, 2, 600 c.f.m. Holleys on a Dove tunnel wedge.

Since I retired in 2014 I have had more time to spend on the car and last year I checked off an item on my bucket list when I towed to Beaver Springs for the FE Race and Reunion.  I got to meet many of you in person an had a fantastic time.  I am rebuilding the front suspension this winter and be back at Beaver Springs in April.  I am looking forward to seeing some of you there again.

Very nice car and great e.t. for that heavy a car.  One thing you might want to check are the spring perches.  Unfortunately I learned what happens if rear axle rotation breaks the stock perches; broken pinion gear, yoke and transmission tail shaft.  Calvert makes heavy duty perches and they are only about $40 but you will have to cut off the stock ones and weld on the H.D. Calverts.  Some guys have told me welding in some steel plate to "box" the stock perches.
