Non-FE Discussion Forum / Re: Trannys
« on: February 11, 2024, 03:34:20 PM »
Just going by comments I’ve seen on the internet the last couple years, the hardest issue I’ve seen reported is getting anyone to answer the phone, or even any form of communication, from both Broader or Performance Automatic. I’ve seen a few people report emails to Broader have much more success. Not trying to knock either company, I’ve bought parts from both and been happy, just giving you a heads up. I think some of these small companies are just overwhelmed with business and supply issues the last couple years. A lot of people like having a person to talk to though, especially on a big item like a complete transmission. So just a heads up if you have a timeline, don’t wait too long to start the contact.

I build my own automatics, so I don’t have any experience with buying a complete one, Ford Motorsports used to have a complete gear train kit for building a wide ratio rollerized C6, and it was a nice piece with all Ford OEM parts, I used a couple, but sadly Motorsports dropped it years ago. I think there are other companies that have picked that up though.

I’d also suggest checking if you have anyone local that might be capable. I know sometimes it’s a crapshoot finding someone good with non-stock builds, or with Ford stuff in general, but they can be out there. We have a some decent transmission shops in Minnesota. If you have a Dragstrip local ask some Ford racers who they use.

I’ll just add, try to report back to us if you have success contacting anyone, and how the transaction goes.

Jeff Lutz had to throw in the towel yesterday after some spun bearings apparently. Brett LaSala went 6.26 @ 227 today to wrap up the overall win on Sick Week.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Bellhousing has a weird casting number.
« on: January 18, 2024, 08:04:10 PM »
I try to track FE casting numbers & date codes, but it’s a small sample of the vast production. With that said, FE bell housings have some “odd” casting numbers, especially the earlier ones, and no, I can’t tell you why. I’m sure I’ve seen someone mention the “CAK” casting in the past, but I can’t find notes on it now. I do however have a CRAK-6394-A bell housing noted, and that one was also for the early starter and had a “9 9 J” 1959 September casting date. The further odd thing about that one is it had the fork on the right side of the bell housing instead of the typical left side. Maybe we can hypothesize the “R” in that one denotes “Right”? Just a guess at this point. There was speculation that particular bell housing might have been intended for the Australian market?.

Along with those there are “MG-6394-A” FE bell housings, and “4848339” casting number FE bell housings. And for the Ford Y-Block family there are “AJ-6394-C” & “AG-6394-B” bell housings in that late ‘50’s - early ‘60’s time period.

FE Technical Forum / Re: 428/C6 no block plate?
« on: January 18, 2024, 06:30:12 AM »
The block plate started in the 1963 model year for all FE’s, and continued through the end of production, and it’s needed because it positively locates the starter. Prior to that the early bell housings had a provision to locate the starter. A 428 would have had one originally. The same C3AZ-7007-F block plate was used for both automatic & manual transmissions, and for both cars & pickups. There were running changes in the amount & location of clearance holes that were punched, and the location and style of the stiffening rib over the years, but any FE plate you find can be modified to work. For example around the 1968 model year Ford started using rear screw in oil galley plugs on the blocks more, and there were extra clearance holes added for those, so if you find a plate without them just drill the needed holes.

I’ll add, most FT big truck applications use a different block plate, due to the much larger flywheel and transmission bell housings they use.

A couple people showed up with Berra powered cars, I think it was at Hot Rod Drag Week, a few years ago. Pretty sure there have been a few more since, there’s so many Drag & Drive events these days it’s hard to keep track. And yes, someone has been importing them to the States for a while now already. As a side note - Tom Bailey’s publication Sick the Mag is a great resource to see what’s going on in the Drag & Drag world, they cover those events specifically.

Jay, perhaps you could contact this fellow. Who knows, he may have spare parts or more.

The person who originally posted that - Dan Schoneck - is who acquired the tooling and is doing the project

I don't think they had 9" rears in any 1960 Fairlane.

The 1960 Fairlane is a full size car.

Private Classifieds / Re: Need 390 double crank pulley
« on: December 18, 2023, 08:01:49 PM »
If it’s going to matter to you, you might want to let folks know what year 390 you’re working on, or which harmonic dampener you have - Ford changed the FE lower pulley bolt pattern starting in the 1968 model year. ‘68 & later is a slightly larger bolt circle pattern, ‘58-67 is a slightly smaller circle. The pulley bolt holes can be modified, or sometimes the other pattern drilled, but just something to be aware of, especially if your hoping things line up easily. Bolt on lower crank pulleys for the ‘58-‘67 dampeners can be a little harder to find.

Yup, Bryan or Jason are both great choices. Jason Anderson has a business Facebook page for Janderson Heads if you want to see examples of his work.

I do have an extensive collection of perfect condition helmets that have aged out, unfortunately they are all Bell brand. Like you said, probably lots of racers that also have them, you probably just need to keep shaking the bushes to find the specific one you’re looking for. Have you tried sites like Racingjunk or Classracer?
