FE Technical Forum / Re: Kurt Neighbor Thunderbolt Clone Video
« on: September 15, 2022, 02:04:25 AM »
On that particular car, I don't know, but for years Kurt has had an excellent working arrangement with Jim Dove. It's very likely that the heads are Jim's work.

KS

Highly unlikely that Dove had a head at that level. I do know that Paul Adams was a big fan of Blue Thunder heads although no idea what is currently on the car. That car sold for a steal of a deal and it's great to see it out running hard.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Distributor Gear Roll Pin Broke
« on: May 30, 2022, 01:43:13 AM »
I use a Mallory Unilite and have installed a larger roll pin in both of mine. I've never had an issue but read someplace that they could have that problem and Rory confirmed it above. My engine(s) show well over 100 PSI oil pressure when cold and I keep the RPM down until the oil warms up. My guess is something going through the pump caused the lockup.

FE Technical Forum / Re: One to One 2x4 linkage
« on: May 30, 2022, 01:36:49 AM »
My setup is 1-1 and it's just using the factory style linkage. As mentioned, with some fooling around you can adjust the rods to achieve your desired result. As for any benefit, just seems to work better on a Drag car whereas on the street the progressive is likely easier to deal with.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Gaskets
« on: April 29, 2022, 11:53:04 PM »
Like Rory, I use the Felpro gaskets with good results. Also liked the Hooker supplied gaskets but never looked to see if they were available separately. I suppose the High Temp Silicone has it applications but hate the red mess before, during and after removal. An open header application will take less to seal than a muffler combination with considerable back pressure. Street cars need longevity where a race car can get by on a marginal gasket. I'm still going with the Felpro.

Vendor Classifieds / Re: 427 SK Heads
« on: April 09, 2022, 01:21:12 PM »
I have had 2 sets of Dove Aluminum heads and the ones on my 427 had some porosity but never a problem. The current set on my 428 are horrible and why they don't leak something amazes me however they have been used and abused for a long time without issues. A bit lower price would make these more attractive but since I'm not a buyer my opinions don't matter.

I'm pretty sure all Dove heads are "SK" so that designation means nothing but one tip I have is to put your head gasket of choice on the head and make sure the oil transfer slot lines up with the hole in the gasket. One set I had the slot was too short and it starved oil to the rockers. Found that out the hard way.

FE Technical Forum / Re: 428 cj balance
« on: April 08, 2022, 03:18:54 PM »
The "offset balance holes" on your Aluminum flywheel are probably to zero the wheel and have noting to do with engine balance. As mentioned, 428's need weight added to the flywheel in a specific area to external balance. Some flywheels come with the mounting holes drilled but because you changed pistons it would still be hit or miss on whether the engine smooths out or not. Best bet is have it done correctly.

FE Technical Forum / Re: 504" Cougar
« on: March 05, 2022, 11:32:56 PM »
I'm a Cougar fan as well but some yes and no from me on this car. Nicely done (not necessarily what I'd do) and $$ spent however it doesn't seem very fast despite the 750 HP claim. Owner does need to power shift as mentioned and it possibly  could use more Carb but if it made 750 with those, then why bother.  I've had the same 600's on everything from a 454" to my current 390 with no issues however I don't street drive. Bottom line (for me) is it's cool but not as impressive as the video makes it out to be.

Private Classifieds / WTB.. Good 428 block
« on: February 15, 2022, 09:03:40 PM »
I know, not your corner store item but I have a friend here on the West Coast of Canada that's in need of a decent 428 block. Shipping may nix any deal however I said I'd ask around.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Heating Issues With Half Filled Blocks ?

You might even see lower coolant temps but the oil will certainly get hotter. What Brent said about an Oil Cooler and even an oil temp gauge would be wise.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Cut down 427 "tulip" valves in a 428CJ head..
« on: January 26, 2022, 03:22:15 PM »
When having my Dove CJ heads done years ago we found the "nailhead" valve on the intake picked up considerable flow over the Tulip. I ordered a custom set of Manley 2.15" and think I have a new set of Ferrea tulip valves here still. Basically parroting what was said above.

I've never had a problem with the "long" input length either. Ran a SB Toploader behind a 390, a 427 and then the 427 with a 428 crank. Only in the last instance did I have the info that made me actually check the depth of the crank hole. In my case I was using a Lakewood with their block plate which may or may not make a difference.

Also haven't had to break in a Solid Cam in a long time but was present when you did on your 427 and that went without issue. I did turn my engine upside down on the stand once only to have all the lifters land on the floor. Put them back randomly and never had a problem. It was an old Cam and well seasoned so results may vary.

FE Technical Forum / Re: nitrous oxide

I've never run the stuff but there is an old saying that "Using Nitrous is like going out with a girl who has a STD (sexually transmitted disease) You want to hit it but are afraid of the consequences"  ;D ;)

I killed mine way back in the late 70's. At least you did think to do the reinforce route but there are so many cars even being raced that are waiting for disaster to strike. In my case, I got some 3" channel and a buddy who could weld built some really beefy perches that are still on the rear today. Also interesting is the chassis guy who did my back brace tied everything together and one U-bolt goes through the brace. A very tough setup IMO. Downside was when I ordered my CalTraks I forgot about the extra width and had to get a second set of mount plates with the holes farther apart.

Drag Strip Results for FE Powered Vehicles / Re: Shaved some tenths off
« on: November 07, 2021, 03:15:23 PM »
Yes..  I have Ersons on my 390 but never had an adjuster problem The rockers seem to be the best part of that setup. Was the nut loose or you just ended up with extra lash? I'd take the adjuster and nut off and check for galling where it seats. Before that, make sure you don't have a bent pushrod. Keep us updated. Progress is always slow but worth it.
