FE Technical Forum / Smokin'

Please have a look at this video.
Seperate O2 sensor in each header showing perfectly good and equal numbers.
Dyno operator didn't understand why it was smoking so bad. Could be soot and grime in the exhaust pipes and mufflers he suggested, but this video was taken about 2 hours into the tuning session so I would think most of it was cleared out by then?
Could it be yet another intake gasket leak? It uses some oil but I have an oil leak somewhere as well since it drips from the bellhousing.

FE Technical Forum / Oil level
« on: July 05, 2015, 08:43:33 AM »
Hi guys
Quick question about amount of oil in my engine.
I have a 8qt pan and a 1qt System1 filter. Aftermarket Shelby block with dipstick tube and a stock dipstick.
Should I put 9qt in this engine? I just want to make sure I have the correct amount of oil in it and then scribe new markings on the dip stick if necessary.
Thanks.

Morten

FE Technical Forum / New FE :-)
« on: May 30, 2012, 05:20:19 PM »
I just want to share my exitement  ;D
I'm about ready to order my new engine.
I've asked for and received quotes from FE Specialities, Brent Lykins and Keith Craft.
I've also asked Barry R but unfortunatly he is very busy right now.

At this point I'm leaning towards a 496cid all alu engine with hydraulic roller lifters around 600 HP/TQ
Wish me luck!  ;D

FE Technical Forum / Compression test
« on: February 26, 2012, 08:51:34 AM »
Hi guys.

I just did a compression test on my 390.
How much variation is acceptable?
1. 176
2. 185
3. 185
4. 181
5. 155
6. 173
7. 168
8. 179

The sparkplugs on #1 and #8 is soaked with oil, the rest is fine.
I've just replaced the umbrella seals on the valves but havent started it yet so the sparkplug reading is before new seals.
Any comments?

Best regards
Morten

FE Technical Forum / Building a new FE
« on: January 13, 2012, 02:24:41 PM »
Hi Guys.

I would like to build a new engine eventually but I'm thinking about starting to collect parts for it now to spread out the financial blow to my wallet.
I've been reading alot on several forums and it seems like some of the parts has become more or less standard in a new build.
Edelbrock heads and Edelbrock Performer RPM intake seems to be the norm.
I'm thinking about the Stage X heads from Survival.
I would also like a 445 stroker kit.
Headers will be FPA or JBA. Not sure about which one fits best.
Cam selection is wide open, I don't have a clue what I want/need. Hydraulic rollers maybe?
I'm looking at the new MSD Atomic EFI but I think it is too soon to jump in, I'd like to read more about peoples experiences with it first.

What I have now is a (as far as I know) fairly stock 390. It has a Performer 390(which I understand is not good), a MSD distributor and an unknown cam. Engine is still in the car so I have no idea what else is inside, if it has been bored etc.
Car is a '67 Mustang Fastback S-code, 9" rear axle with unknown LSD and approx 3.50 gearing, four wheel discs, Unisteer power rack and pinion, 4-speed toploader(to be replaced with a T56 Magnum which should be on its way from American Powertrain by now).
This is not a track car, street only. I'm looking for alot of low/mid torque, not high rpm.

Even if I'm new to V8's, I have been putting together 70-80 aircooled VW engines(mostly for drag race) over the years and about 15 transmissions. In other words, I'm pretty sure I know where the business end of a wrench is  :D
I've just ordered Barry R's FE book and I hope to be more enlightened after reading that.

The purpose of this thread is to hear what you guys think about the parts I mentioned. I'm wide open to any advice and feedback you guys would like to share  ;D

Best regards
Morten
