FE Technical Forum / current fuel injection options?
« on: May 23, 2024, 11:02:00 PM »
Trying to get a better grasp on the current options for fuel injection and the FE motor.

A google search yields various accounts of success stories, but also incidents of users who struggled to achieve reliability and durability.  It doesn't appear that any one manufacturer is immune.  I do understand that a very small number of dissatisfied users can distort the actual performance of a given product.  The end user's proficiency and understanding is also a consideration.

I'm hoping to get a better understanding of the different options, their quality, and perhaps the relative merits of TBI vs port injection.

The offerings I'm aware of are:

Fitech
Edelbrock Pro flow
Holley has what appears to be 4, 5(?) distinct offerings (Sniper, Stealth, terminator, atomic, dominator)
FAST
Summit max-efi
Pro-M racing ($$)
(Megasquirt? Haltech?)

The Holley offerings are a bit confusing at first glance.

FE Technical Forum / 1970 f250 390 build
« on: May 03, 2024, 02:22:51 PM »
Rather than starting a dozen threads related to this project I'll just start one and ask questions as I go along.

Picked up a 1970 F250 360 C6 Dana 60/4.10 gear truck last month.  Stock aside from aftermarket wheels.  Goal is to build a fun street truck that can be a shop truck for projects.  Don't envision towing or hauling heavy loads often.  I like the idea of a powerplant that is comparable or better to the new F150's with the 5.0 or ecoboost, while being 800lbs lighter.

I found a local guy with a pile of 390 stuff from his highboy build that he had converted to a 460.  Got a package deal that included essentially two 390's and a bunch of parts.

The first 390 is a complete motor that reportedly had two collapsed lifters when he pulled it:

~4.070 bore when measured with calipers
Lemans rods, 10:1 compression, unknown make for pistons
small custom truck hydraulic roller cam 208/213 @ 0.050 112 lobe separation, .520 lift
Howards cams (Morel?) Hydraulic lifters
C8-AEH heads 2.06(?) intake valves, 1.56 exhaust
Edelbrock rpm intake
factory adjustable rockers
performance distributers duraspark with bronze gear
ARP hardware

The other is a virgin 390 short block with 4.050 bore
included was a set of unused/rebuilt D2 heads

Among the other parts:
Summit RTR distributer
Hedman longtubes

I'm considering four different ways to go about the build:

Rebuild as 390/iron heads CJ valves with different/new custom roller cam
390/custom cam/TFS or other aluminum head
445/iron heads
445/TFS heads

Questions to follow.

FE Technical Forum / Aftermarket head availability?
« on: May 01, 2024, 11:19:03 PM »
Looking to get a handle on which aftermarket heads are available these days.  The Edelbrock heads seem to be a shelf item at most places.  Will need to reach out to Barry R to see what the lead time is for his offerings.  I've read about Blue Thunder and Bear Block heads.  Trick Flow would be my first choice but doesn't seem like we'll be seeing them for some time.  What can you guys tell me?

Currently deliberating over my what my engine build will look like.

FE Technical Forum / Cam sizing for 390 question
« on: April 28, 2024, 05:03:27 PM »
Hi Guys,

I recently picked up a 1970 F250 with 360/C6 with the intention of a fun street/shop truck build.  Top on the list of things to do is address the anemic 360.  I haven't decided on full scope of build as yet.

Found a local gentleman who had swapped to a 460 in his highboy extended cab 4x4 build.  I purchased two 390's from him, one is a core and the other he pulled from the truck after two lifters collapsed.

My question is cam sizing; he stated it's a custom hydraulic roller and the cam card lists:
gross valve lift intake: .520 exhaust 0.520
Advertised duration in: 272 ex: 280
duration at 0.050 in: 208 ex: 213
lobe seperation 112

Is this a bit on the small side for a street 390?  It was used in his ~6500lb truck, my f250 is roughly 4400lbs.  Should I consider replacing with a different cam during the rebuild process?

I'll have more questions to pose as I tear the motor down and consider swapping parts.
