FE Technical Forum / Pushrod hole size in 2x4 intakes
« on: June 16, 2023, 12:44:14 PM »
Are the pushrod holes in the Ford medium riser 2x4 intake the same size as the Blue Thunder medium riser 2x4 intake?  I have a Ford 2x4 medium riser, and I'm using a POPs roller rocker system with POPs pushrods, which are thicker than the original Ford pushrods.  Seems the holes in the Ford intake are awful small to use the POPs pushrods.

FE Technical Forum / H pipe and electric cut-outs
« on: March 21, 2019, 09:02:23 PM »
Getting ready to put an exhaust kit on my 1969 Mach 1, and it comes with an H-pipe.  I'd like on put in some electric cut-outs.  Should these go before or after the H?

FE Technical Forum / compression test
« on: September 27, 2017, 01:06:28 PM »
How many squirts from an oil can should I shoot in the cylinder to do the "wet test" part of a compression test on a .060 428?  Engine is still smoking after eliminating the easy stuff (PCV valve now has a air/oil separator,  oil is restricted to the heads with size 62 Holley jets, intake gaskets changed and now there are no known leaks.)  Engine was rebuilt about 1500 miles and three years ago.

Besides a bushing for the distributor, is there anything else that needs done to this block to run it in the place of an FE?  My 428 CJ in my 1969 Mach 1 was already bored .060 when I bought the car.  There is a 391 FT short block for sale close to me for $150.  I don't know if it has "428" in the water jackets or "C" scratch on the back.  I plan to just use the block, not the rest of the FT rotating assembly.

I put a Streetmaster on my 428 about a month ago. I keep finding a small pool of oil in the area around the second from back on the drivers side intake bolt. This is one of those bolts that is hard to get a wrench on because it is so close to the runner. The bolt has a washer on it (ARP intake manifold bolts set.)

Has anyone had this issue, and if you did, how did you fix it?

FE Technical Forum / Carb spacers on a Streetmaster
« on: July 24, 2017, 11:49:23 AM »
I am running a port matched Streetmaster 390 on my 428 Cobra Jet with 4 speed.  While the car hasn't died on me, the idle gets a little erratic when I'm sitting at a stoplight on hot days, so I'm thinking it is caused by heat in the engine bay.  My current spacer is a 1 inch aluminum open spacer.  I am thinking about getting one of the plastic 1 inch Super Sucker plastic spacers, or a plastic, wood, or phenolic open spacer.

Does anyone have dyno or track comparisons of a Super Sucker vs Open spacer on a Streetmaster?

FE Technical Forum / Update on my 428 Cobra Jet
« on: July 24, 2017, 11:40:47 AM »
Thought I'd send an update on my 428 I've been having issues with.  I initially was having problems with smoke and fouled plugs, and lack of power that I thought may have been due to not bending down the head gasket tabs, which prevented the Blue Thunder 4V from sealing properly.  I removed the intake, bent down the head gasket tabs, put two helicoils in the back intake manifold holes in the heads, then installed a medium riser dual quad manifold.  Well, as I was tightening and lossening intake manifold bolts to try to get all of them started, evidently both helicoils started coming out, and prevented that intake from sealing, and this time, it leaked water into the engine.  Well, I took the intake manifold off again, reinstalled the helicoils, and tried a port matched Streetmaster since at this point, I just wanted to get the car back on the road for cruising and car show season.  I am happy to report that after a 50 mile drive, there is no smoke, the engine stays cool, and doesn't appear to leak anywhere!  Really having fun with the car now!  I may try the medium riser again after car show season, but for now, I'm having fun with it.  It seems like the carb is heating up when the engine is hot, so I'm thinking about changing carb spacers, which I will ask some questions in my next post.  Thanks for all the help guys!

I put my dual quad intake manifold on a couple weeks ago, then all the end of the school year stuff high school JROTC teachers have to do (awards banquet, pass in review, final exams, grades, graduation, etc.) took of for a while.  Topped it off with coolant, and then I started it up.  Saw a water leak at the back china wall.  Well, after further investigation, my oil was that "chocolate milk" color.  After tear down, it looks like the helicoils in my back intake manifold bolt holes backed out some, preventing the intake from sealing well around the back water jackets.  I think I have things fixed now, but I never had a water down on the inside of my engine.  I was thinking I'd change the oil and filter, then take it for a 1/2 drive, then change the oil and filter again.  Am I on target, or is there a better way?

FE Technical Forum / What size Holley jets to use?
« on: May 10, 2017, 10:30:57 AM »
A few days ago another member asked what size jets to use in the heads, and another member (Barry?) said it can depend on the rocker system and oil pump used.  I currently have my rockers off, so this is the perfect time to ask the forum.

My car is a street cruiser, with occasional "spirited" driving.  I have the POPs rockers system and stands, along with a POPs high volume oil pump.  Engine is a 428 Cobra Jet with stock heads and the pointy oil drain-back tins.  I currently have size 70 jets.  Should I stay with that, or go smaller or larger?

FE Technical Forum / Autolite 4100 1.19 venturi
« on: May 05, 2017, 03:28:30 PM »
Going through some more of my departed Dads stuff.  Found a 1.19 venturi Autolite 4100.  By doing some internet searching, seems these are somewhat rare.  The numbers on the side are covered by a stamp xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, like maybe it was rebuilt.  I'm thinking of keeping it for a possible small block build in the future.  How are these compared to a Holley 1850?  This one is complete and not frozen.  Everything moves freely.

FE Technical Forum / Intake manifold issues (Oil pooling on valves)
« on: April 30, 2017, 09:49:40 PM »
Update:

I took my Blue Thunder 4v intake manifold off today.  Took it off for 3 reasons.  1.  I has an oil leak at the back China Wall.  2.  I kept getting a cloud of smoke at start up, and a little smoke after the start, but not as much.  3.  I have a medium riser 8v intake manifold to put on now, and have always liked the look of those.  This is the third time I've had this Blue Thunder off.  Other times for the same 1st two reasons.  Since then. I've found out I should have bent down the tabs on the head gasket.
Here's some background on the engine.  428 block with original Cobra Jet heads.  Engine rebuild and valve job done 2 years ago, with less than 750 miles on the engine.  Heads have Pops rockers and end stands, new shafts, with Holley size 70 jets as oil restrictions.  Anyway, after taking the intake manifold off, I noticed I have small puddles of oil sitting on top of the intake valves.  Last time I put the intake on, I used "The Right Stuff," so it was a little difficult to get the intake to break free, and messed up the gaskets when it did finally come off.  Gaskets were blue Fel-Pro with the ridge around the ports, not the Print O Seals.

So what do you think was the cause of the oil puddles on the valves was the intake hitting the head gasket tabs and not sealing?  This time around I will bend down the head gasket tabs before putting on the new intake manifold.  Should I use smaller Holley jets?  Could the Holley size 70 jets be too big?
