FE Technical Forum / transmission options
« on: April 29, 2023, 07:34:46 PM »
What manual trans missions are there that can handle drag strip duty in a 4000 lb.
Galaxie with slicks and 500 hp? My top loader is fine at the moment, but it may be the next weak link.
I don't need one at this moment but with summer shows and swap meets coming up, I'd like to have an idea of what to buy or stay away from, like something that appears in good shape but parts are no longer available for.
           Thanks,Tom.

FE Technical Forum / AFR readings
« on: February 18, 2023, 09:26:31 PM »
I would like to know what I should try to achieve in afr readings, generalizations. I have been dealing with a "running warm "problem last summer/fall and I think I made progress, but it got too cool to tell or really drive it more. I installed an AEM wide band with the o2 in the right collector. The little bit I was able to drive it it was way lean.I adjusted the idle to 13.8-14.5. Cruise is alittle leaner, and if I jump on it hard it goes lean off the scale! It may come back towards richer a little but by now I have to keep my eyes on the road.
I have a new in car vacuum gauge witch reads higher than the value I used to select my power valves, so that may help. When it gets warmer out and I can drive it some more and I get used to what I am seeing on the gauges, I will make some changes.I'm thinking more main jet to bring cruise into line and power valve channel restrictions for wot(less restrictions).
The carbs are a pair of 1850's on a M.R. intake,Edelbrock heads,CJ size valves,CJ crank,Auto tech pistons,
.017 427. cam is 258@.050  .6-.610 lift.  20 initial with 35+- total.  108 lobe separation.
car is a 64 Galaxie ,close ratio top loader and 4:86 rear gear.
Mainly looking for guidance on afr ranges, but any tuning tips will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Tom.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Tire question
« on: October 21, 2021, 06:17:06 PM »
What would be an allowable difference in tire circumference?
My car has a Detroit locker and its not happy with the new American racer tires I put on the back.
At first I thought something came loose or broke, but nothing did. It would power steer on throttle and lurch the other way when I let off. I put a set of BF Goodrich on and problem solved. I remeasured the tires tonight and the difference seems less than before. (heavy 1/4-3/8 now ). I don't know, maybe I'll try them again. I've been working on a cooling issue with my new engine and I haven't been able to dial in the tune or other details till the cooling issue is fixed. Thanks for any advice or suggestions.

FE Technical Forum / Rocker arm shimming
« on: April 18, 2021, 06:55:31 PM »
I am reusing my Dove rocker arm assemblies that were on iron cj heads and now are going on Edelbrock heads. What is the clearance range when shimming? I have .020 for a pair of rockers. Also most rockers have a shim between them and the spacers but none between rocker and stand. No abnormal wear. Should I just shim to get the roller centered (side to side) or do we need a shim on both sides of the rocker? I hope I explained that well enough and thanks.

FE Technical Forum / Camshaft degreeing question
« on: February 27, 2021, 07:11:30 PM »
When adjusting your intake centerline,is" straight up" the same value as the LSA ?
A lower value would be advanced and a higher value would be retarded?
This is a cam that I used in my last engine, I have the cam card but there was no ICL or LSA info, don't know how
I set it that time, but I thought it was advanced. I called the cam co. and they said it has a LSA of 108, so
if I set ICL to 108 would that be straight up?

I've only done this four times and it always goes better on my friends projects

This is for a new engine for my Galaxie. When I get further along I'll post in the project section.

Thanks, Tom.

Would anyone here be able to id a Crower cam?
It's for an FE and the number on the cam is 16218.
I'd like to find the specs and weather its solid or hyd.
I did a search and checked Crowers site, but found nothing.
Thanks

FE Technical Forum / mustang 11 front suspension questions
« on: March 06, 2020, 09:51:47 PM »
How does the mustang 11 front suspension work for you in a drag car?
Are you still able to use leaf spring rear suspension? Is there enough front end travel?
I am not a points racer, just fun events, but I would like it to work ok.
The car is a 71 maverick with a small block now, that hopefully will have one of my FE's in a couple of years.
     Thank you

Hi everyone,
I'm aware of the early blocks with out the forward facing hole for the alt,
and I recently found a second type of water pump hub. Are there other differences? For the power steering ? The two dampers I have, put the belt in the same spot. Would this be true across the board?
I'm interested in mounting point variables for performance applications, not casting numbers for particular years or models.
Thanks.

Private Classifieds / Things I could bring to FERR
« on: April 18, 2019, 07:54:15 PM »
These are some things I could bring to the reunion. I will not be bringing them unless someone asks me to.

1  391 truck crank, stock, I do not know the size, but I will check.=$250
2  new 7024p .030 428 dome pistons=$450
3  2 460 cranks, 1 uncut and 1 .010 and .020,both will need to be cut.=$100 each
4  1 429 crank ( I think ) don't know condition, will check into. =$100
5  Several FE cast iron 4bbl. manifolds.=$50 each

Things I may trade for:
   1  FE sfi damper.
   2  460 adjustable valve train
   3  460 sft cam
4   460 intake ( not stock or performer)
   5  FE performer rpm

If anyone is interested, let me know.
Thanks

FE Technical Forum / 427build/compression questions
« on: January 28, 2018, 06:38:34 PM »
What is the ragged edge for compression for iron heads vs aluminum heads on pump premium?
Also I don't mind mixing cam2, my cars main purpose is "fun at the track",I'm not a every week racer,
and this isn't a max effort build.
My plan is to build a sturdy short block with flat tops and start with iron cj heads that I already have
and grow into aluminum heads and larger chambers.
Using Summits comp calculator, with an Icon flat top, compression will be
11.5 with a 70cc head(+-) and less with larger chambers.
My car is a 4000 pound Galaxie with a 4 speed and a 4.86 rear gear.
Street time is mostly for "testing".
The short block will hopefully be 4.25x3.98.
I will be using my current cam and valve train,258@.050 and 615 lift.
Is this a reasonable plan? If I have to, I may wait and pick up some aluminum heads.
Thoughts and advice?
Thanks, Tom

FE Technical Forum / 31 spline slip yoke
« on: March 13, 2015, 08:16:44 PM »
Is there a 31 spline slip yoke available that accepts the 1350 u joint for my Galaxie toploader?
I found several for the 1330 joint but none for the 1350.
I just built a new center section and I used the 1350 yoke, thinking I would upgrade
the driveshaft when I finished the transmission repairs(by next weekend).
Not the end of the world, I can use the 1350x1330 joint if I have to.
Just thought it would be stronger and less parts to keep track of.
Thanks for any help.

FE Technical Forum / O2 sensor bung
« on: April 05, 2014, 04:34:09 PM »
Where should I place my O2 sensors for a wide band meter?
After the merge section there is only 3.5 inches to the collector flange on my headers, but
from the flange to the mufflers I have about 14 inches.
What would be the best position?
Engine is a 390 with Crites headers.
Thanks,Tom.

FE Technical Forum / drivetrain questions
« on: September 28, 2013, 08:34:33 PM »
Hello everyone, been registered for a while, but this is my first post.
I just bought a new Moser nodular housing and I will be buying a new pinion support.
I was planing on a Daytona style.
So do I need a new yoke for a daytona style support, and will an aluminum support be ok or should I go with an iron one?
It needs to last.
Thanks, Tom.
