FE Technical Forum / 4.375 RPM crank
« on: January 08, 2014, 12:04:25 PM »
I'm considering a build using a 4.375 RPM crank. RPM recommends using a 6.8 BBC rod. My concern is with the 6.8 rod that the wrist pin will intersect the oil ring groove. I don't want to deal with that scenario if possible. Anybody ever try this combo before?
I've read about several builds recently where a 6.7 BBC rod was used with the 4.375 crank. My question is did the crank have to be turned down so the bottom of the piston would clear the counterweights?
A blueprint of the crank would be really handy right now.

FE Technical Forum / Factory rocker arm adjusters
« on: April 14, 2013, 11:46:33 AM »
I'm running the factory adjustable rocker arms and have a couple that can be turned by hand.  :o I used to see Crane adjusters with jam nuts that would work with the factory arms. Anybody know where I can get a replacement adjuster with a jam nut? Or an adjuster that has slightly oversized threads?

FE Technical Forum / Question for Jay
« on: April 03, 2013, 07:46:44 PM »
Since I've been so hung up on calculating DCR's lately, I went through your book and calculated your dyno mules. I had to make a few assumptions but I think I'm close. Most came in close to 8, +/- .2. Except for the 427 sideoiler, it was around 7.12. What did I miss?

FE Technical Forum / How much power am I leaving on the table?
« on: March 31, 2013, 10:50:33 PM »
My C4AE-G heads have valves with a concave on the combustion chamber side. This raised my combustion chamber volume to an average of 80.625 cc's for all 8 cylinders which puts my static CR at 10.37 and DCR at 7.25. This is with a .02 steel shim head gastket by the way. I was figuring on 74 cc's, which would have put my static CR at 11.16 and DCR at 7.78. I'm trying to keep this 390 pump gas friendly.
Thanks for the opinions guys.

FE Technical Forum / Jomar rocker girdles

Does anybody have any experience with Jomar?

http://jomarperformance.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=50&osCsid=bfad3b23123c212714a3ab5244bd61d2

I like the looks of the rocker girdles. Kinda pricey but maybe good quality?

FE Technical Forum / Cut down plenum divider
« on: January 11, 2013, 08:54:14 PM »
I was kicking thru the graphs in the dyno section and found one where Jay built a 492 with a modified Blue Thunder dual plane intake with a removable divider. The HP gain was notable.
Question for Jay: Can you post the associated graph showing the torque curves?
Question for everybody: Has this mod ever been tried with a Performer RPM with a smaller FE on a dyno?

Non-FE Discussion Forum / 4R100 trans trouble
« on: September 17, 2012, 12:10:19 PM »
The transmission in my 99 powerstroke is messed up. I took some stuff to my wifes office yesterday and when I went to leave, reverse was gone. But I still had drive. So I pushed it out in street and drove off. Then I noticed that 3rd and 4th gears were gone too. It just won't shift or the gears are gone. Anyhow, when I bought this truck the tranny was a year old and I've only had it for 8 months so I don't think it's worn out. Fluid looks good and smells good. I'm trying to figure out if this is something I can fix without dropping the trans. Like the valve body is screwed up maybe? I've did alot of reading on other forums but nothing definite yet. Anyways..... Automatic trannys are my weakness. Any wisdom you guys could pass along would be greatly appreciated.

Member Projects / 445 mud motor build
« on: August 27, 2012, 05:26:00 PM »
Just wrapped up mud racing last weekend. I did 5 different races this year and took 2nd place 4 times! I'm sick and tired of that for sure. Especially when its stroked small block chebbies that are doing all the winning!!
The 390 I've been racing has been a reliable overachiever and will be tamed down a bit and used in a 77 highboy.
So I'm getting started on a 445 for my 72 F250. This is the truck my dad bought in 1978 or so.
The heads are C4AE 6090G castings.
Each head had several broken bolts in the upper exhaust flanges. After sacrificing many 7/16 nuts and a 3/8 tap, I was able to get the flanges in working order. Two studs had to be drilled out. The tap was cut short and threaded in from the back side of the flanges after drilling since good threads were there.

Edit- still trying to post nice pics without doing the attachment deal.
Editx2- Figured out the photobucket website.

FE Technical Forum / Which set of heads should I grab?
« on: August 03, 2012, 08:12:12 PM »
I've found a couple of 390s on craigslist and I'm going to buy one of them. I've already checked them out. One is 4.050, I think it's a 105 casting. Seems like a good starting point for a stroker. But the guy has a couple of sets of heads to choose from. Should I grab the C8AE's or the D2TE's. I'll sit and grind for hours on the best set if I can't find some suitable CJ castings. Which ones flow better? Which ones would be the better head for a set of CJ valves?
