FE Technical Forum / All things FE Headers.
« on: November 27, 2018, 09:54:45 PM »
Doug's question a couple weeks ago about header fitment around the oil pan got me thinking - there are always a lot of FE Header questions, since we have such a large variety of FE powered vehicles, and often many with tight engine compartments, along with just the usual header issues, maybe we could use a post that gathers as much of the info together in one place as possible, hopefully so people can search in the future. I see a lot of FE header questions elsewhere online too, whether looking for recommendations, or "will they fit...?". There are a lot of reasonably priced stainless headers on places like eBay now days too, but usually with nothing more than the info that they fit "Fords", not real helpful. My thought is that people will continue to add to this post, hopefully with pictures, but also their experiences with fit issues, luck they've had with swapping headers to a vehicle that didn't originally have an FE, Cheap headers that worked...or didn't, custom headers they've built, race headers, dyno comparison results, headers that happened to work on a different application, etc. I think you get the idea. The pictures could help people I.D. old headers they find at swap meets, etc. too. Be sure to include brand names and part numbers if you know them. Jay's book has some great info that can give people some good guidelines, but of course there are many more varieties of FE headers out there. This could become a huge out of control post I suppose, so let me know if you think the idea is dumb.

I recently put together a "mock up" FE engine in the garage to help with a project I'm working on, so I figured I could start this out with some FE headers I have sitting around while that was handy to bolt them to and take pictures. I'll add some of the observations I've had with them ( at least what I remember ).

Like I said, please add to this any pictures you have, whether the headers are just sitting on the floor, or on your vehicle, or modifications you had to make, whatever. You never know what might help someone out.

I'll add too, people should certainly go ahead and make their own separate header posts if they want, I don't mean to push someone here where their answer might get lost, I'm just trying to make a general informational post people can refer to if that makes sense.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Throwback Pulling Truck pictures
« on: November 04, 2018, 07:51:09 PM »
I knew a few of the members here are into Pulling Trucks. I was going through some of my pictures this weekend and came across these. These are from the Dresser Wisconsin annual Memorial Day weekend Truck event back in May 1980. At the time a friend of mine owned a 427 SOHC powered 4x4 pulling truck. He was supposed to be at the event and I was going to watch, but at the last minute he couldn’t make it, I ended up going anyway. Here are a few pictures I took that day. The red “Big Iron” Ford with the “427” on the doors was the hands down winner that day. My understanding is originally when it was built it was powered by a 427 SOHC, but at this time it had a big cubic inch Boss 429 based engine. I don’t remember the name of the driver anymore. Other pictures were a couple more of the Fords there that day. Shortly after this my friend sold his pulling truck ( minus the SOHC ), I had a chance to buy it, but it just wasn’t in the budget. Sadly I didn’t get any pictures of it back then, unfortunately we didn’t all have a camera phone back then lol.  If anyone here recognizes any of these trucks feel free to add the info. The 4x4 Pinto in the background of one of the pictures was pretty cool too.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Drag Week 2018 is underway.
« on: September 10, 2018, 10:32:15 AM »
After a brief delay for fog this morning, Hot Rod drag Week got underway about 8:30 am Eastern time today. There is a free live video feed again this year, a few ways to access it, including the Hot Rod website link below.

Scott Miller already ran with his FE powered '68 Cougar with a 9.188 @ 145 pass. Hemi Joel made a pass, looks like he had some issues, which is surprising since the test passes have been good, not sure what the issue is yet. I have not seen Doug run the Galaxie yet.

Lots of good runs so far, including a few 7's and at least one in the 6's from Tom Bailey in the Unlimited class.

Richie Crampton is back with the '57 Wagon, this year with a billet alcohol funny car engine with water jackets added, but they are just making exhibition passes since they didn't get their support truck out of the pits in time this morning, sounds like they still had work to do. But they have made a pass already.

Member Projects / 1970 F250 Crew Cab Pickup
« on: August 31, 2018, 03:21:48 PM »
My good friend Bradford and I grew up in Baudette Minnesota, right on the Canadian border. Bradford was born there, I moved up there with my family for my high school years. Recently Bradford and his son Alex were back in Baudette for a relative's wedding, and while there they drug home a new project. This 1970 F250 Crew Cab originally belonged to the CN ( Canadian National ) Railroad, and was FE powered. One of Bradford's brothers, Mark, owned it later, then parked it. Alex is now the new owner. Plans right now are just to get it running & driving again. When Bradford gets me the data plate info I'll post it here, and hopefully Alex will send away for the Marti report, I think it will be interesting, and we can post that later too. Bradford & Alex lurk on the forum here, hopefully they can add to this thread in the future as the project advances. Just for a little more on the history, Baudette Mn. is separated from Canada by the Rainy River, and right near Lake Of The Woods. The CN Railroad line enters Minnesota from the town of Rainy River Canada at Baudette, and runs through the U.S., under Lake Of The Woods, then reenters Canada at Warroad Mn. It is a much shorter route for the train to go under Lake Of The Woods and through the U.S. than to stay in Canada and go over Lake Of The Woods. There is a CN Railroad station in Baudette, although the CN closed it years ago, and it's now a museum. Here's some pictures of the truck, and a picture of the former train station in Baudette.

After years of hard work Hemi Joel finally got his '31 Plymouth Coupe to the track to test tonight in preparation for Drag Week 2018! And with a week to spare before Joel & Jeff leave for Atlanta lol. Joel had hoped to be ready to test at Rock Falls Raceway in Wisconsin on a couple recent weekends, but there were too many things to finish, and those opportunities passed. Brainerd International Raceway runs a Wednesday night Street Drags program periodically over the summer, mostly a grudge race and time trial type event for licensed vehicles, and last night was one of the last chances to get some runs before Drag Week. Joel's Trunk Monkey Jeff and I meet Joel at his house Wednesday afternoon and packed up some tools and loaded up the coupe. We had a perfect day, with temps in the low 70's, and clear sky's. Brainerd Raceway opens the gates at 4pm, and then starts tech inspection and lining up cars in staging, and starts running cars down the track at 5pm, running until sundown, which was about 8:30pm. The track announcer told everyone that they had a record turnout for a Wednesday night Street Drag event at over 160 cars, so unfortunately we were limited on time runs. We're not going to post any ET results here ( sorry ), so as not to tip off any of his Drag Week competitors that might be watching, but Joel was able to get 3 relatively mild passes in, which helped in getting comfortable with the car. He's got a few issues to address that cropped up, along with a bunch of things that are still on the to-do list, but right now things look good for making Drag Week. Joel will be pretty busy over the next week to finish getting ready, so I don't know if he will have a chance to comment here, but maybe. Meanwhile, here's a few pictures from tonight.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / 2018 Hot Rod Drag Week entry list is published
« on: August 20, 2018, 06:13:50 PM »
Below is a link to the Hot Rod website and the 2018 Dragweek entry list and class breakdown that came out today. First I just want to say good luck to all our forum members going. As always it should be fun to see how it unfolds, always lots of drama. I know our Ford guys are getting prepared, will this be the year Hemi Joel makes it with the '31 Plymouth Coupe? 23 cars registered in Unlimited, will this be the year someone sets an official 5 second run? Or a 5 second winning average? I've seen an internet post that there are at least 11 Australians entered this year, although not all had to ship a car over.

Keep in mind there may be a couple entries listed in the wrong class here, seems to happen each year. Also, not all of these will actually make it, but I know the waiting list runs into the hundreds, so there are plenty waiting to take their place. There is a Drag Weekers Facebook page I follow, as those of you that have watched Drag Week in the past should be aware - there are dozens of folks still assembling their cars, or already repairing testing breakage

Just a warning, Hot Rod's ad infested, slow running website is still all that.

FE Technical Forum / Ben Line wins Stock Eliminator at Brainerd
« on: August 19, 2018, 04:55:07 PM »
Ben Line and his 428 CJ powered '69 Mustang won the Stock Eliminator class today at the Brainerd Lucas Oil NHRA national event over Randi Lyn Shipp. The final round was a "Heads-Up" race with no handicap or breakout since both Ben and Randi Lyn's Firebird were in the same C/SA class. This is the second year in a row Ben Line has won the Nationals here, and 3 years in a row for a 428 CJ winner. Last year Ben won over another local racer "Wild" Bill Feist and his 428 CJ powered '69 Mustang. 2017 was the second final in a row for Wild Bill, he won in 2016. Randi Lyn Shipp won Stock Eliminator here in 2015, so she knows the track, and is a tough competitor on the NHRA circuit. Ben's FE engines are built by his brother Lance and father Lawrence at their shop Line Performance in Wright, Minn. They build the engines of many of the local racers, and specialize in Stock & Super Stock class engines.

Member Projects / FE Power clear valve covers at car show
« on: August 09, 2018, 02:27:50 PM »
One of our members, Alex S., son of my mechanic buddy BradFord, won "Best Engine - Modified" at a local car show recently with his FE powered Ford pickup equipped with the new FE Power clear valve covers. Great job Alex! I'll add too, Alex has a strong running FE, it's not just pretty. Alex is helping Jay test the baffle design for the breathers, so far it seems to be working well. Here's a couple pictures, anyone else have any pictures of their FE with the clear valve covers installed?

Private Classifieds / Non-FE - In search of rocker arm fulcrums
« on: June 04, 2018, 11:09:11 PM »
I have a friend looking for some NOS Ford rocker arm fulcrums. These were used in the Boss 302, Boss 351, 429 CJ/SCJ & 429 Police stamped steel rocker arms. They are Ford part number C9ZZ-6A528-A or D0OZ-6A528-B. At one time they were also available from NAPA under part number 214-1071, but it sounds like what NAPA sells under that part number now are not the correct part. These are shaped like a "half barrel" and not the fulcrums shaped like a "half ball". Below are a couple pictures of what he is looking for. If anyone has any of these brand new let me know and I can put you in touch with him ( He's not on the internet ). Thanks.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Any Sunbeam Tiger people here?
« on: May 05, 2018, 02:19:05 PM »
I ran across some Tiger body parts today someone has, hood, trunk lid, doors, nose ( or do I have to say bonnet & boot? Lol ), average condition, some rust. I'm aware of what the cars are, how is the market for body parts? I'd think they're a bit scarce, but maybe not? Does this stuff turn up? Should I grab it because there isn't much out there? Go ahead and give me your thoughts.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Brechler - Kaase Mel in new Hot Rod
« on: January 06, 2018, 02:49:03 PM »
The new March 2018 Hot Rod Magazine has an article on the Engine Masters winning 770hp MEL of our forum member Royce Brechler. Just a heads up for anyone interested, of course we’ve discussed the engine before, but it deserves all the attention it gets.
