FE Technical Forum / My 496 FE on the dyno
« on: August 20, 2011, 05:39:00 PM »
Here's my 496 FE on the dyno. I've been messing with it and building it for about 5 years, finally finished it up and got it on the dyno this week. It's not nearly as impressive as Barry R's bad boy, but it's pretty respectable for a solid cam, 9.5 - 1 compression ratio street machine. Here's the youtube of it running. I had to stand there in the test cell during the pull to get the video and I'll tell you what; that is one wild screaming machine!!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DH6zVS-9v4A&feature=mfu_in_order&list=UL

The cam is a Crane F-266, it has 266 duration at .050 and .621 lift the pistons are Diamond with a 22cc dish, the heads are aluminum Dove SK's and they flow 340 in and 240 exhaust. The block is a Genesis iron block with a 4.31 bore, it's got a Scat 4.25 crank and Scat H Beam rods. The intake is a Dove Tunnel Wedge with 710 cfm BC-DC carbs. The dizzy is a Pertronix II Billet and I'm running a MSD 6AL box.

Peak HP was 644.1 @ 6300 RPM, Peak torque was 629.7 @ 4800 RPM. It's going in my 64 Galaxie with a 3.89 rear end and wide ratio toploader, no power anything, but it will have A/C LOL!!!

Lots of credit and thanks to Ross; he put up with my endless questions and helped me get everything just right, I would never have got it done without his help.

As an aside; the dyno operator Earl, is a big time chevy guy, he races two car on a regular basis and he had just built and tested a 496 ci BBC .... and it made 633 hp at 6500 RPM. Needles to say, he was stunned and impressed with my old dinosaur!

FE Technical Forum / Plug & Play Pertronix ... Disappointment
« on: June 15, 2011, 04:44:25 PM »
Well, the Pertronix Billet Distributor I ordered came today and I was excited to see what it looked like. It looks like a quality piece, but the cap and rotor look like what you would see in a Chevy except they're black. But that isn't the real problem, the real problem is that the cap touches the front carb. I'm building this 496 with a Dove Medium Riser Tunnel Wedge intake and Holley 715 carbs and the cap touches the front carb. It doesn't touch at every location as you twist the distributor to adjust timing, but the bumps in the cap where the plug wires connect touch the carb.

Any ideas?

I don't know what to do now, but I'll bet a MSD would have this same problem.

FE Technical Forum / Tunnel Wedge Tri Power?

Say this on Carl's Ford Parts; made me wonder about how it would perform compared to the original Ford Low Riser Tri Power intake.

After the disappointing dyno results with my 416 Tri Power, just wondering how much difference an intake like this would make.

FE Technical Forum / FE Dizzy & Ignition System
« on: June 07, 2011, 07:03:27 AM »
Just wondering what your opinion is about distributors and or ignition systems. When I took the 416 to the dyno, the operator gave me a lot of crap about using a stock distributor with the Pertronix module. It was a Ford duel point with mechanical advance, I had sent to Farron to get recurved. Once we got the timing right, the engine seemed to run good; just didn't make a lot of power. Earl (the dyno operator) kept saying that he thought the dizzy was holding things back.

I wish I knew more about this; but from what I've read about ignition, I just couldn't see how the distributor I was using could make that much difference over say a billet MSD set up.

What am I missing? Am I missing something?

By the time I buy a nice Ford 427 dizzy; around $200.00, a Pertronix III $130.00 and have it recurved $80.00 or so, new cap & rotor $30.00; the cost is getting to be right there with a Billet MSD. It's not a matter of money and while I like the looks of the stock 427 dizzy, I don't want to be giving up a bunch of power just to look correct on the 496 I'm about ready to dyno.

FE Technical Forum / MeLeod Clutch Fork?
« on: May 13, 2011, 07:43:08 PM »
Anyone used one of these forks for a Galaxie application?

I like the spring clip better than the wire used on the stock fork set up to hold it in place.

FE Technical Forum / Super Comps & Tire Clearance for 64 Galaxie?
« on: May 12, 2011, 05:53:55 PM »
I set the 416 engine I built into the 64 Galaxie frame to mock up the exhaust and all the mounting accessories I'll have when I put the 496 I'm building in it. And it sure looks like there is a clearance problem on the passenger side with the tire hitting one of the header tubes. The Super Comps have two tubes; the back two cylinders that go outside the frame, then under and back into the collector. When I put the front tire on and swing it all the way to the right it hits those header tubes.

I haven't adjusted the steering, so I don't know how bad those tubes interfere or hit when you turn right, but it sure looks like it's going to be a problem.

Anyone else run Super Comps in the 64 and are you having issues with this?

Other than that, they look like they would work great.....but I don't have the clutch linkage set up, so maybe that will give me some grief too, stay tuned....

FE Technical Forum / Flywheel weight theory?
« on: May 10, 2011, 09:19:05 AM »
OK, what is the theory on flywheel weight? I see there are 40, 28 & 14 lb options for my FE projects. I'll be putting them in pretty heavy cars; a 61 Starliner and a 64 Galaxie; both have 4 speed wide ratio toploaders and 3.91 rear gears. The toploaders will both have the lower 2.90 first gear as well.

Just a bit confused about why the different weights and what their advantages and disadvantages are. ???

FE Technical Forum / Capsaddle 416 first fire on the Dyno
« on: April 23, 2011, 05:00:31 PM »
This is just a about a minute of break in time when we first fired the 416 Capsaddle FE, I've been building:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLMcEU5Osbw/

I'm a little disappointed in in the HP numbers it made, but the torque comes in strong and peaks at 465 ft. pounds at 3800 RPM, HP peaks at 368 and 4800 RPM. Both torque and HP head south after that. From what I've been reading, seems like the cork in the build is the Tri Power.

The specs are as follows:

.030 over 390 105 block, 428 crank, Capsaddle, C3AE-C heads with CJ sized valves, it makes 10.3-1 static compression, cam is an Oregon Cam Grinders #1475 with 236 @ .050 and 282 @ .020 and .571 lift. Pistons are Diamonds and as I recall a 11 cc dish. Carbs are what came with the TriPower from Ford.
